  • Where can I get compost worms?

I have a block of land (ex rice field) presently being filled with dirt. The dirt being used is fairly sandy so I need to add compost to it to bring up the soil structure. Does anyone know where can I get compost worms in the Chiang Mai area please?

Also, what else can I add to the soil to improve its structure?

Thanks lamphun, I will wait for that phone number.

Yes, I did know that they need organic material. I meant that I'd have the worms to eat weeds, plant prunings, food scraps, manure etc, and then I'd spread the castings onto the ground where I will have plants growing.

                I just noticed this thread.
I know a bunch about compost worms, and have been at it for a few years.

I started with red wrigglers and african night crawlers. They work great but are non native specie and get attacked by ants and crowded out by native specie which invarably find a way in the bins.
There where some folks in Thailand doing it where I got my starters... The main guy no longer does it.
I've backed off, mainly because it is very difficult to get Thai people to adopt unconvetional things like compost worms and hence be able to manage them.

If you come to Ranong I would give you some. Problem being transport and keeping them alive as they get established.

There a gazillion different worm species likely some good ones already establish in the local area you have to learn how to look for them.

                  G'day Earl,
I still haven't found any locally, my garden is doing ok but I'm sure that it would be better with worms (and their castings) in the soil. I've got a good pile of lawn clippings just begging for a bunch of worms to get stuck into it.
I know of a place Khon Kaen way but that's a fair drive away too. I might have to go for a bike ride over there one day.

You can often find native local specie buy digging under a large tree along a river, during the wet season.

You can cultivate them in a bin with rice husks or coffee shelling mixed and moistened with fresh cow poo mixed with water.. Add treats like watermelon rinds which is like candy for them..Avoid giving them pineapple and papaya seeds which don't agree with them because of some of the enzymes.
If you protect them from the very aggressive jungle ants they will likely thrive and multiply fast.

Also best to keep the bin covered to keep out frogs and certain beetles which carry parasites who can wipe out the worms.
