  • Building a quick, easy and economical fence for a garden.

Back in the far corner of our land I wanted to build a fence to keep my dogs and tortoises out from trashing a small garden my wife and I wanted to start. We looked at numerous fence options ( Most were expensive) and decided on a Bamboo option. As we all know bamboo is abundant all over the place and if you have some friends you can go get it for free.

One of our good friends parents live on a nice creek and the bamboo is everywhere. So we grabbed up our saws and gear and went over to their place. It started out just 3 of us picking and cutting down Bamboo but soon 3 others joined in to help. It didn't take long to have what we needed.

We decided what lengths and diameters we wanted and cut accordingly.

Following all safety and hauling requirements, I loaded it all in my truck for the trek back home

First we cut the strips that would go into long top and bottom Bamboo. Bamboo is incredibly easy to work with. It splits straight with ease.

My FIL drilled slots in the long pieces to hold the strips as I split all them for it. My wife was in charge of trimming the strips to fit as required

We pre built the sections to the lengths we wanted.

    A pre fence install beverage.....

We dug holes for the large bamboo posts and started from the wall out

    Fence coming together

    Bamboo fence all done.

It took three of us 4 days to build from Bamboo harvest to finished. We did not work 8 hrs a day on it, Probably 4 or so. Cost was about 300 baht not including my beer..

We will start to till the dirt and plant our garden.

Nice job. Reminds me of the first fence I built for our vegetable plot from long strips of branches of a certain tree on mils plot. That was a kind of wattle fence which eventually rotted. Now we just fence it off with netting. Dogs got the message.

It's a pity that no matter what fence you have , once the vegetables are growing you get insects etc coming to eat them.

Thanks. It was a fun project. Never worked with Bamboo.

To your point I figured the fence will last 2 years tops as the insect world here is tenacious and will destroy it quickly.

There is a thread on Teakdoor by a guy (his nic at the time was Smithson) who built a house from bamboo. He treated the bamboo with high-pressure borax. I think soaking in diesel is also done.

I'm not sure how much difference it would make but it might be an idea next time to lift the bottom off the ground a touch. Looks nice though. Good job.

Thanks for the feedback. We expect the fence to last about a year or so. My FIL says it will last 2. That's even better.

If one ever brings home a piece of furniture that shortly develops signs of internal worms (sawdust on the floor beneath) throw the thing into the nearest klong for 24-48 hours.
Kills the little ****ers every time!
God, the panic within the Dems, MSM, and left must be horrifying...realizing that Joe is really the best they've got.
