Last week I spent about 30 minutes trying to scare away a 2 meter snake which was hanging around our kitchen door. All the while my sister in law was standing well away and shouting “cobra” in Thai. Definitely not a cobra but to identify it I joined a Facebook group called Snakes of Chiang Mai.

In the group members post pictures of snakes they’ve encountered for identification. The frightening thing is the number of pictures of Malaysian Pit Vipers seen in the woods close to town.

A golden tree snake. Non venomous. Not my picture. A small one hides in a palm near our front gate

Oh my gosh, aren't these highly deadly snakes? Take good care in running into these. Scary! :scream:

^^Non venomous, small.

I’m surprised by the people on that Facebook page who post pictures of dangerous snakes with comments like”this snake was close to my feet”.

My fight or flight would have me jumping out of the way, not pulling out my mobile phone for a snap.

Deadly if you don’t get an anti venom injection within hours.

Nice to see you getting your post count up.

As a general observation Thais are shit scared of any snake. This is probably drummed into them in childhood as a survival mechanism.

Alternative observations might suggest that "most" Thais are indifferent towards snakes, less fearful.

Different circles of observations and exposure, I guess.

^A Thai indifferent to the presence of a snake? Maybe if it was in a glass tank, otherwise that’s new to me.
