TAT plans to extend visa stay for tourists to raise revenue

Wait until all the tourists see the military roadblocks, the generals droning away on the telly everyday, the alcohol bans and restrictions, the dire warnings about criticizing anything except the US embassy, or eating a sandwich in public.
Why would they ever want to leave? It's practically paradise.

tourism revenue target of 2.2 trillion baht a year
I'm certain I read a few days ago, on this forum, where the tourism revenue was roughly B 309 billion -- (about 10 percent of Thailand's GDP)

^ nevermind, in the other thread GDP was expressed in USD, not baht.

Right! Once they leave, they "Return to Happiness". I think the TAT is preparing its 2015 international campaign, next year theme is "Thainess"

Apropos... What is TC's management doing for us, members, to successfully "Return to Happiness" ? Where's the roadbook?

One of the measures is the doubling of stay for tourist visa holders which would, for example, allow European tourists to remain in the Kingdom for as long as 60 days, as opposed to the current 30-day limit.
Don't those morons know their own visa system?
It's 60 days with a tourist visa, 30 days without one.

"They" are the clueless TAT morons, no relation to the legislators or immigration who implemented the recent changes.

No sign of a rebound: Thailand tourist arrivals down more than 10% in Augustdown .42% in the first 7 months of the year, but bad tourism numbers are also a worry.

                      TTR Weekly:
International tourist arrivals to Thailand posted a decline of 10.66%, January to August, this year,THB1.8 trillion in tourism related revenue.

The original target was 28 million foreign visitors and THB2 trillion in tourism-related income.

                      BP
: That would be a loss of 200 billion baht in expected revenue. To put the tourism numbers in context, see the below two charts that BP has made from World Bank Data:

                      BP
: The above is in numbers. The below is in revenue (slightly skewed as in US$ so some fluctuation depending on the baht, but still up more than 350% since 1996)

                      BP
: The above is up until 2012 only. TAT with 2013 numbers:
                      BP
: So a bumper year last year

                      BP
: As you will see that the decline in August is actually higher than the average decline for the first 8 months so there is no evidence that tourism has rebounded.

Tourism is unlikely to be helped by the recent grisly killing of two young Britons in Koh Tao and the comments from Prayuth, as outlined by Saksith, which give the impression of casting blame on the victims which has not gone down well in the UK.* Then, you have this Reuters article

The military government is clearly not practiced in the subtleties of international diplomacy.
That can be accepted up to a point, but sooner or later they will have to be more honest about both the good, and bad side of life for visitors.

I am pleased that the military government appears to be cracking down on corruption, scammers and illegal vendors, travel and environmental abuses.
It remains to be seen if they have underestimated the size of the problem or the ingrained endemic nature of it.

It is also encouraging that the PM has declined the opportunity to form a political party. That at least enables some sense of fairness may be possible without party political bias?

You're not in business here, are you Charles?

The only way corruption has been reduced is by making the price higher, thereby forcing the smaller players, who can't afford the new prices, out of the game.

It I were running this show I wouldn't want any opposition either.

I always am told that tourism in Thailand is not a big factor for the Thailand economy. I think it does.

Also, I figure they do not count all of the long stay farangs that buy their girl's houses and land, ma and pa's houses, family vehicles, washing machines, furniture, giving their step kids / own Thai kids a better life and so much more. Some also spend a hundred thousand baht or more a month playing around. Others spend fortunes for health care paying double and triple the Thai price for medical expenses.

Whoever tells you that is an idiot. It is a direct 10%+ of GDP and goodness knows how much more on a flow-on effect.

Thise are very, very rose-colored glasses, Charles.

Look at t this way . . . why the need for a political party where they may need to bow to the majority of the population and be voted out of power . . . this way they can stay in as long as they wish without opposition
