Insurer hopes free service can boost demand, reduce accidents

BANGKOK -- MS&AD Insurance Group Holdings has launched a safe-driving training service in Thailand with the aim of cultivating demand for casualty insurance while also reducing accidents and lowering insurance payouts and premiums.

The Japanese insurer's InterRisk Research Institute & Consulting unit has begun the service, providing companies with driving aptitude evaluations and defensive-driving training free of charge.

The program covers business managers and professionals such as transport company drivers.

It also lends out driving recorders and provides guidance on dangerous scenarios.

Unlike Japan, Thailand has very few driving schools, and safe-driving training is reportedly rare.

In the future, the plan is to offer the service in Indonesia and Malaysia as well.

Traffic accidents are climbing rapidly in Southeast Asia accompanying the spread of automobiles.

Thailand's traffic fatality rate is second in the world at roughly eight times that of Japan, according to the World Health Organization.

Traffic fatalities in Vietnam and Malaysia occur at five times the rate as in Japan.

This poses a risk to companies that use corporate vehicles, and is also leading to expansion of the casualty insurance market.
