  • Going to the Doctor's Office in Thailand Won't Drain Your Wallet

Thai DoctorIf you get sick in your home country, you are often looking at a couple hundred dollars spent between a doctor's visit and any prescriptions you might need to by at the local Walgreen's Drug Store. Fortunately, the cost for a doctor's visit and prescriptions at a local clinic in Thailand are an entirely different story. Neighborhood clinics with decent Thai doctors can be found in every city and village of Thailand. I have always found the doctors in Thai clinics to be proficient in English as well as have a wonderful bedside manner.

A Thai clinic doctor's bill will usually cost around 100 to 200 Thai baht and no more than 500 baht. This includes any medications that might be prescribed to you by the Thai doctor. This is a great price compared to what we are used to paying in the West. Keep in mind that the price can go up a lot more if you go to a clinic that is in a high end fashion mall or other expensive high rise. The service will no doubt be the same as a corner office, just 5 or 10 times the price. The service in these clinics is wonderful and fast. I have never waited more than a couple of minutes before I was call in to meet with the clinic physician. These clinics have competent general practitioners on staff and often times ones that specialize in ear, nose and throat, dermatology, gynecology and obstetrics. Most towns and cities also have a few chiropractors and acupuncturist running offices as well.

As I said, I have always been able to find a decent English speaker at these clinics, but you might want to take your Thai partner or friend with you just in case. You definitely do not want anything "lost in translation" when you are dealing with health issues.

I am often asked if the medical treatment in Thailand is substandard compared to a first world country. In my experience, it is the same if not a whole lot better. The Thai nurses are very friendly and truly are like "angels of mercy" compared to the cold and cranky nurses back home. In 2010, nearly 2.5 million traveled to Thailand for medical treatment ranging from cancer treatment, minor operations, open heart surgery, fertility treatments to plastic surgery. These folks came from all over the world because Thailand offers world class medical services for a fraction of the cost people pay in other countries. If you visit Bumrungrad Hospital in Bangkok, you will see patients from nations from all over the world. This hospital is more like a five star hotel, boasting Italian, Japanese, Indian, and Middle Eastern restaurants right in their facility. Their patient rooms are top notch as well.

Of course, your local town or village neighborhood clinic is not going to be a Bumrungrad Hospital. However, you will receive first class and prompt service for pennies on the dollar. If you have a sore throat, sinus infection or a cough, then these small clinics will suit your needs very well. If you have a more serious affliction, then visit one of Thailand's many international, private, or public hospitals.

    • How to Live Cheap In Thailand by Chuck "Charlie" Wilson
      by Chitown
You can live on 200,000 baht a month in Thailand or you can live on 25,000 baht a month. It depends on how foolish you are with your money. I have been living in Thailand for years living on a shoestring budget of less than 25,000 baht a month. It is not that I do not have more money on hand to spend, but more that I like to save several thousand dollars a year while I am living a Cheap Charlie lifestyle in Thailand. Those of you that drop 100,000 to 200,000 baht a month may be wondering how that is even possible. You may be tempted to call me a liar. You may accuse me of living in some tin shack near a Bangkok canal (klong) spending my days panhandling on Sukhumvit Road to survive. Neither are true! ...

    • The Thai Police: What Proactive Changes Should They Make?
      by Chitown
The police in Thailand already have a tough job, so I am going to try not to knock them too much. For one, their wages are absolutely below what a person that puts his life on the line needs to be. Thai police officers also have to purchase their own weapons, uniforms and I am told, their patrol motorcycles. I cringe every time I see two or three of them on one motorbike weaving in and out of the crazy and dangerous Thai traffic system. On top of all the expenses, they have to be in the heat, rain...

    • A History of Expats in Thailand
      by Chitown
There were quite a few Westerners residing in Bangkok prior to the Japanese occupation of the Kingdom during World War II. The British expats had the most impact on Thai society before and after the war. They established the British Chamber of Commerce in 1946. English taught to Thais was British English and many children of the royal family were educated abroad in England. There influence continues to this day as more and more British expats are relocating to Thailand for work or retirement.
