    • Most people support 'run against Prayut': Poll

A narrow majority of Thais support the run to seek Gen Prayut Chan-o-cha's ouster, with a higher proportion supporting the upcoming "Wing Lai Lung" than the rival event to show support for the prime minister, according to an opinion survey by the National Institute for Development Administration, or Nida Poll.

The poll was conducted on Dec 23-24 on 1,258 people aged 18 and over of various levels of education and occupations throughout the country to gauge their opinions on the two events, both tentatively set to be held on Jan 12.

The first event is the "Wing Lai Lung" run or the run to seek Gen Prayut's ouster, organised by anti-military students. The other is the "Dern Wing Cheer Lung" event organised by a group of people to show support for the prime minister.

The organisers have sought police permission to hold the two events - the first at Thammasat University and the other at Lumpini Park.

In the poll, the respondents were asked to give their opinions on the two events.

On the "Wing Lai Lung" event, 53.10% of the respondents voiced support for it - with 40.86% giving strong support for it and 12.24% showing moderate support. On the other side, 43.32% were against it - with 31.32% voicing strong opposition and 12.00% showing moderate opposition. The rest, 3.58%, had no comment or were not interested.

On the "Dern Wing Cheer Lung" event, 67.41% of the respondents said they were against it - with 49.76% showing strong opposition and 17.65% moderately opposed. On the other side, 18.92% said they somewhat supported it and 9.30% gave it all-out support. The rest, 4.37%, had no comment or were not interested.

Asked whether they were concerned there would be political conflicts in 2020 similar to those in the past, 22.81% said "yes" but believed the conflicts would not be as serious; 21.86% believed the conflicts would be at the same level as before; 21.62% thought the conflicts would be more violent; 13.04% were little concerned over this matter; 19.00% were not concerned at all; and 1.67% had no answer or were not interested.: https://www.bangkokpost.com/thailand...-poll#cxrecs_s

          • Prawit confirms run against Prayut can go ahead/Rival walk for PM the same day

Deputy Prime Minister Prawit Wongsuwon on Monday reaffirmed that a campaign-run calling for the ouster of Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha from office will be allowed to go ahead.

"The government has given it the go-ahead and will not ban it," Gen Prawit said, but warned the organisers must stay within the law and not use the event to stir up political conflict.

The run against the prime minister will be held at Suan Rot Fai, officially known as Wachirabenchathat Park, from 5am-9am on Sunday. Supporters of the prime minister plan a rival event that same day - a campaign-walk at Lumpini Park for Gen Prayut.

"Do not cheer him in front of the tube. We will be at Lumpini Park on Jan 12," a promotional post said on the Facebook account @CheerLung.

Both camps claim overwhelming support for their events, although Gen Prayut on Monday seemed less than keen about both activities, saying the country needed to move forward.

Future Forward leader Thanathorn Juangroongruangkit and party spokeswoman Pannika Wanich will be among the runners calling for Gen Prayut's removal, and the deputy prime minister did not have any objection to this.

Gen Prawit, however, made it clear that he would not be taking part in the walk for the prime minister.

"Me? I can barely walk," he said when asked.

Results of a Nida poll by the National Institute for Development Administration released on Sunday showed the run against Gen Prayut was more popular that the pro-prime minister meander.: https://www.bangkokpost.com/thailand...t-can-go-ahead

          • Seems kinda childish to create his own run to counter the run against Prayut. If he seems so intent to keep the peace it's probably the wrong move.

              • PM orders security upgrade amid US-Iran tensions

Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha today (January 6) ordered the Defense Ministry and Army to closely monitor and evaluate the escalating conflict between US and Iran, according to ministry's spokesman Lt Gen Khongcheep Tantaravanich.

This follows a US drone strike that killed Maj Gen Qasem Soleimani, commander of Iran's elite Quds Force, as he traveled in a convoy near the Baghdad airport on Friday.

The premier, who is also Defense Minister, also also ordered responsible agencies to beef up security for potential attack targets. They must also be ready to evacuate Thais overseas if the situation deteriorated.: https://www.nationthailand.com/news/...ernal_referral

                • 'People power' events irk Prayut/Political runs, walks 'not constructive'

Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha has urged Thais to let the country move forward democratically, as he contends with the prospect of rival events this Sunday, both for and against him, which bring "people power" onto the streets.

Rival political campaigns for and against Gen Prayut are planned, one a political run to "oust" him, and the other a walk by supporters to show their backing. The run against the prime minister will be held at Suan Rot Fai, or Vachirabenjatas Park, from 4.30am-9am on Sunday. The prime minister's supporters plan a rival event at 6.30am the same day -- a campaign-walk in Lumpini Park. Some enthusiasts for both causes are also thought to be planning their own, smaller versions of the same events in the provinces.

However, the prime minister suggested he was not happy about people taking part in either event. "I'd like everyone to use democratic mechanisms to join forces in developing the country first rather than destroying one another. Who is right or wrong will be decided by judicial procedure," Gen Prayut said at Government House yesterday.

"I really see no point in those people seeking to oust this person and that person, either the groups supporting me or against me," he said.

"There are only a thousand, or several thousand people behind these movements, while everyone else suffers the consequences of them," Gen Prayut said.

"Please don't simply use every public forum to discredit the government.... Formally lodge a complaint about who you think is wrong and I will then take a look at it," he said.

United Front for Democracy against Dictatorship (UDD) core leader and red-shirt group leader Jatuporn Prompan, meanwhile, warned the government to ensure security at the events, or else it could suffer if "third hands" stir up unrest.

Government spokeswoman Narumon Pinyosinwat said the premier is concerned about the safety of those who attend the events even though he is aware they have every right to take part in them. Deputy Prime Minister Prawit Wongsuwon reaffirmed the run calling for the ouster of the premier will be allowed to go ahead.

"The government will not ban it," Gen Prawit said, while warning organisers to stay within the law.

Meanwhile, the other side is busy giving its supporters advice on how to conduct themselves too. "Do not cheer him in front of the tube. We will be at Lumpini Park on Jan 12," a promotional post said on the Facebook account @CheerLung.

Both camps claim overwhelming support for their events. Future Forward leader Thanathorn Juangroongruangkit and party spokeswoman Pannika Wanich will be among the runners calling for Gen Prayut's removal, and the deputy prime minister raised no objection.

A poll on Sunday showed the run against Gen Prayut was more popular that the pro-prime minister meander.

Future Forward's spokeswoman Pannika Wanich, meanwhile, raised concerns over what she described as threats by individual police against the run against Gen Prayut.: https://www.bangkokpost.com/thailand...rayut#cxrecs_s

                            • Thousands gather at Lumpini Park to show support for Prayut

About 10,000 people gathered at Lumpini Park in Bangkok on Sunday morning to show support for Gen Prayut Chan-o-cha to remain as the country's prime minister, according to media reports.

The gathering began simultaneously with another event at Suan Rot Fai or the Railway Park where a large number of people rallied to call for Gen Prayut's ouster. Anti-Prayut runs were also reported in other provinces.

At about 5.30am, Prayut supporters began to turn up at Gate No 4 of Lumpini Park, the rendezvous point, to recieve T-shirts and caps with the words "Dern Cheer Lung" (Walk for Prayut) on them from the event's organisers.

They gathered and sang the national anthem to pay respect to the national flag and chanted a Buddhist prayer at 8am before starting the walk at about 8.30am, carrying billboards and banners with messages showing support for Gen Prayut.

The number of Prayut supporters later swelled to about 10,000.

Thitimon Cottan, 52, a state enterprise employee, said she joined the rally for wanting Gen Prayut to continue serving the country as prime minister because, in her opinion, he is the person who has returned peace and made many contributions for the betterment of the country.

Ten mobile toilets were deployed at the park for the participants. The rally was to be called off at 11.30am.: https://www.bangkokpost.com/thailand...ort-for-prayut

                              • Thousands join rival rallies/Camps to square off again next month in Chiang Mai

Supporters and opponents of Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha turned up in droves on Sunday for their respective political rallies, with the rival camps likely to square off again next month when the anti-Prayut event organisers plan another event in Chiang Mai.

Tanawat Wongchai, organiser of the anti-regime "Wing Lai Lung" (Run to Oust the Uncle), told the crowds at Suan Rot Fai or Vachirabenjatas Park that the run marked the start of the campaign to oust Gen Prayut from office.

He also said the next run is being scheduled in Chiang Mai on Feb 2.

"This is our first step. We will continue running to oust the Uncle this year," he said at the end of the event, using the word "Uncle" in reference to Gen Prayut.

The event's organisers claimed the event drew 13,000 participants, which included key figures from the opposition and political activists.

Future Forward Party (FFP) leader Thanathorn Juangroongruangkit, FFP list-MP and spokeswoman Pannika Wanich, and Prachachart secretary-general Thawee Sodsong were among the politicians who joined the anti-Prayut run.

Mr Thanathorn said the government will face more protests in the coming months and that the large turn-out yesterday was highly indicative of increasing political awareness about the regime's prolonged grip on power.

He said his participation in the activity was a message that he and the FFP stand with those calling for political change. Mr Thanathorn also denied the party was behind the organisation of the event.

"I'm here to show that we're fed up," said Paphatsara Netsang, a Thai who lives in Singapore but flew in for the rally.

"Nothing has changed. Everything is still the same. There's no economic improvement."

Across the city at Lumpini Park, thousands of people gathered to show support for Gen Prayut at another gathering called "Dern Cheer Lung" (Walk In Support of Uncle). The participants carried signs and banners with messages expressing firm support for the prime minister.

Haruethai Muangboonsri, a well-known singer and staunch supporter of the premier, said yesterday the group is prepared to launch a counter-rally if Gen Prayut's critics have other ones in the works.

She also insisted that Gen Prayut came to office through a democratic process following the general election last year.

"Don't twist it and say the prime minister is a dictator," she said.

Thitimon Cottan, 52, a state enterprise employee, said she joined the rally because she wanted Gen Prayut to continue serving the country. She said the prime minister brought back peace and order after political unrest, and that he had made many contributions toward the betterment of the country.

At the event, large boards were put up for the prime minister's supporters to attach sticky notes with messages of support. According to the event's organisers, the police estimated some 13,000 supporters of Gen Prayut turned up at Lumpini Park.

T-shirts and caps were distributed free of charge to the participants.

Parallel events for "Wing Lai Lung" also took place in several other provinces, including including Buri Ram, Phayao, Chiang Mai, Nakhon Pathom, and Nakhon Ratchasima.

The number of participants ranged from dozens to hundreds and the runs were said to be closely monitored by the police.

Despite their starkly opposing views, both events proceeded without incident.

Sontirat Sontijirawong, secretary-general of the ruling Palang Pracharath Party (PPRP), urged both camps to keep their political activities calm and avoid taking to the streets.

He said social rifts and political missteps should be avoided to stop the country from slipping back into a crisis.

"I'm not saying those activities are wrong but all sides are urged to look at the big picture and use mechanisms in the constitution [to solve problems]. Please do not take people to the streets," he said.

Anusorn Iamsa-ard, spokesman of the main opposition Pheu Thai Party, predicted that the protests will intensify across the country.

"The civil sector led by our youth has lit a spark. Pheu Thai and the opposition will move ahead with our no-confidence debate against the government. The administration is unlikely to stay in place past the first half of this year," he said.

Chaturon Chaisang, former chief strategist of the now-dissolved Thai Raksa Chart Party, wrote on his Facebook page that calls for the prime minister's ouster will soon gain momentum.: https://www.bangkokpost.com/thailand...llies#cxrecs_s
