  • Nicknames resurface for government and ministers

It is an year-end tradition for the press corps at Government House to come up with nicknames for the government and the ministers in an expression of collective opinions towards those in power, based on what they have achieved in the course of the year.

However, it took a long pause for the past six years in the absence of an elected government until now. For the first time in several years, nicknames have again been assigned to the administration and ministers.

Sieng Kong is a well-known shopping district in Bangkok that sells second-hand automotive parts at cheap prices, therefore the nickname reflects the current status of the government coalition comprising old-timer politicians and state officials from previous governments who were stitched together to form a new team but unlikely to work well together.

In the eyes of the press, Prayut seems like a confused boxer especially when he condemned certain policies but ended up embracing them, such as the populist policy, attracting MPs from other parties, appointing ministers who were involved in past political rallies, and raising the minimum wages. Prayut also seems confused when facing questions from the opposition and on many occasions simply changed the subjects.

Deputy PM Gen Prawit Wongsuwan: Big Bro The Entertainer
As the oldest member of the 3P gang (Prawit, Prayut and Pok Anupong), Prawit is the big brother who needs to look after his little siblings as well as entertain members of government coalition when they run into problems, from international conflicts to chicken farm scandal.

Deputy PM Somkid Jatusripitak: Mr. PracharatDeputy PM Wissanu Krea-ngam: Sri ThanonchaiDeputy PM and Minister of Commerce Jurin Laksanawisit: Independent State
Jurin got this nickname from his working style that mainly compliments the policies of his Democrat Party while ignoring the opinions of its coalition partners, as if he is operating independently from the government.

Deputy PM and Minister of Public Health Anutin Charnvirakul: Rat PoisonDeputy Agriculture and Cooperative Minister Capt Thamanat Prompow: Mr Grey Area
Thammanat got his nickname from being involved in many scandals including the shady validity of his academic qualifications, having been convicted and jailed in Australia for drug offense, and making an under the table deal with an opposition party.

Deputy Agriculture and Cooperative Minister Mananya Thaiset: Madame Awkward
Mananya was in the spotlights when she joined Anutin in spearheading the ban of three toxic chemicals, only to face opposition from the public. The proposed ban of two of the chemicals were delayed while the useage of glyphosate, was allowed to continue.

        • Govt readies street-food fiestas/Boost for tourism, economy on menu

The government is moving to spice up the country's culinary scene next year with a plan to blend world-renowned Thai street food with its tourism promotion policy to attract visitors and boost the economy.

The government is collaborating with the private sector to organise a series of street food festivals in major tourist destinations, starting in February in central Bangkok.

Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha on Tuesday presided over the launch of the "Thailand Street Food Festival 2020'' publicity campaign.

The festival comprises six street food festivals, with vendors laying out the first feast on Silom Road in Bangkok on Feb 1-2.

The banquet will then move on to Ayutthaya on Feb 29-March 1, before rolling into Chon Buri's Pattaya on April 3-6, Chiang Mai on April 25-26, Khon Kaen on May 1-3, and Phuket on May 30-31.

"Thailand's street food is world-famous. CNN has declared Bangkok to be the world capital of street food. Street food is scrumptious and varied and tourists can find it any time, any place and at cheap prices,'' Gen Prayut said.

CNN named Bangkok as the city with the best street food in the world in 2016 and 2017.

According to research firm Euromonitor International, revenue from Thailand's street food was estimated at 276 billion baht in 2017, up by 4.3% from 2016. That figure is expected to increase to 340 billion baht in 2021. In 2016, there were an estimated 103,000 street food stalls across the nation, accounting for 69% of all places to eat.

Tourism and Sports Minister Phiphat Ratchakitprakarn said that the street food festival project offered a good opportunity to boost revenue from tourists. More than 500 million baht is expected to be generated during the first festival on Silom Road, Mr Phiphat said.

Foreigners who list the attraction of street food as a major reason for visiting Thailand are mainly from China, Russia, the UK, Malaysia and the US, Mr Phiphat said, adding that promotion of "gastronomy tourism" will be a boon to the economy.

Prasarn Wangrattanapranee, vice-minister attached to the Prime Minister's Office, said that the six provinces chosen as venues for the street food festivals are major economic hubs renowned for their nightlife, which makes them popular with foreign and Thai visitors.

Tourism Authority of Thailand governor Yuthasak Supasorn noted that the tourism sector plays a crucial role in the country's economy, as it accounts for 10% of gross domestic product and generates about 2 million jobs.

Citing data from the World Trade Organisation, he said that Thailand earned a record 1.65 trillion baht from tourism in 2016 and 2017, ranking third on the list of countries with the highest revenue generated from tourism.

Early this year, the country's tourist income rose to 3 trillion baht, Mr Yuthasak said. Bangkok also ranked third among cities for visitor spending on food and beverages, and sixth for spending on shopping, according to the Mastercard's Global Destination Cities Index 2018, he added.

"I'm confident that the street food festival project will be a major event in attracting more foreign visitors, which will in turn boost the country's gastronomy tourism," Mr Yuthasak said.

Chatchai Payuhanaveechai, president and chief executive of the state-owned Government Savings Bank (GSB), said the bank is supporting efforts to improve the livelihoods of street food vendors. It has also launched a reality show called the GSB Street Food Contest, to improve vendors' skills in cooking and presenting dishes.

Meanwhile, Chomkamol Poompanmoung, chief executive of WP Energy Plc, a SET-listed liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) trader, said the company was planning to set a world record for the largest Pad Thai, which will be cooked in the world's longest pan.

She said the pan will be 110 metres long and 99cm wide. A total of 100 cooks will fry up the Pad Thai, which will weigh about 2,200 kilogrammes and be served to 22,000 people. Gen Prayut will preside over the event, she said.

Chumpol Jangprai, who heads a working panel on the street food project, said that under the project, Thailand Professional Qualification Institute will help train street food vendors as professional operators to ensure their food stalls comply with hygiene and environmental standards.

Mr Chumpol, co-founder, managing director and chef at R-Haan, one of two Thai restaurants which became the country's first two-Michelin-starred eateries this year, said that more than 100 street food vendors and 400 food shops from across the country will take part in the street food events.: https://www.bangkokpost.com/thailand...estas#cxrecs_s

          • Prayut troubled by fake news/Cops, military must work as one, says PM

Prime Minister and Defence Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha has ordered the military to be more proactive in tackling fake news online.

"Gen Prayut has ordered the Defence Ministry's directorates and the armed forces to increase monitoring and examination of fake news and step up its response to the distortion of facts in online media to prevent misunderstanding or damage to agencies and society in the broader scope," Defence spokesman Kongcheep Tantravanich said after a meeting between Gen Prayut and the military top brass on Thursday.

"[Gen Prayut ordered] the agencies to clarify fake news so that people do not fall prey to conflict. Meanwhile, we also have take legal action against people who release such information," he said. Last Tuesday Gen Prayut said he felt "sorry" to learn of fake news that came from a politician -- Puea Chat spokeswoman Ketpreeya Kaewsaenmuang -- about a tampon tax. The prime minister is worried that misinformation will cause a negative impact on the public who are not aware of the credibility of stories.

The premier and defence minister also urged the military top brass to closely observe "situations" which he claimed "are not quite peaceful".

Exchanging New Year wishes with the military top brass, however, the premier admitted he was not happy with many circumstances.

Gen Prayut did not elaborate on what kinds of "situations" he was referring to but asked his colleagues to help him to keep a close watch.

This year, violence in the South erupted from time to time, leading to concerns over the role of insurgency in a series of bombings in Bangkok and Nonthaburi on Aug 2.

On the political front, Gen Prayut was frustrated by a "flash mob" organised on Dec 14 at the Pathumwan Skywalk in Bangkok by Future Forward leader Thanathorn Juangroongruangkit after the Election Commission (EC) decided to ask the Constitutional Court to dissolve his party over its controversial 191-million-baht loans.

Gen Prayut also told military officers on Thursday to work with the police and state agencies to ensure better road safety during the five-day vacation period which will start tomorrow.

While Gen Prayut was giving away travel kits as part of the road safety campaign, he said to a woman whose looked bored, "You are bored with the PM, aren't you?"

She nodded. "Okay, that's fine. No matter how bored you are with me, I cannot be bored with you as you are a Thai. Please remember, that's fine. Thanks for being bored," he said.

Meanwhile, in the restive South, authorities received moral support and advice from His Majesty the King.

His Majesty the King offered counsel to officials in the South and advised them to work in harmony out of love for the nation, religion and the monarchy, and without seeking recognition.

Representing His Majesty in granting gifts to officials in Pattani, Yala and Narathiwat, Privy Councillor Paiboon Koomchaya said the King feels sorrow each time he learns of lives that have been lost there. As a result, he wished to offer moral support along with three items of advice to officials.

First, he advised agencies to integrate their work to ensure it is done to secure national peace. Second, he gave counsel that love for the country, religion and the monarchy will bring prosperity to the country and to the residents of the South. Lastly, he said work should be done without boasting or excessive ambition.: https://www.bangkokpost.com/thailand...d-by-fake-news

Germany: Freedom of speech has 'limits' - Merkel

                  • Of course freedom of speech has limits, even in the US.
The constitution states: "Human dignity is unviolable", the right to free speech (also granted in the constitution) ends where this premise is broken. For example, if one calls Jews animals and advocates violence against them.

That's hardly comparable to labeling anything which doesn't follow government guidelines "fake news" and persecuting the authors.

Oh, btw, it's not Merkel who wrote the constitution, nor is she the first one to refer to the subject in this way.

                      • I would be looking at a few other countries before Deutschland. The country has done wonders since WW2. It has dealt with the past (unlike Japan) and built a modern progressive country. Frau has been if anything a little over compassionate on the migration front and that may bite later. The only remnant of the past politically seems to be the lack of will to take a more leading role as one of the major economic powers and democracies of the world.

Like most Germans, she can't understand Arabic but is fairly fluent in English.
It was conservative chancellor Kohl who was an embarrassment for his utter lack of English.

I'm sure some of you 'old hands' who worked in the ME remember "Shufti Kuss"

As in "Let's go have a shufti" etc

Then again, if you're a little loose in the loafers you might want to have a "Shufi Zobra"!
