      • PM shrugs at public fury over humorous tone in announcing new Covid restrictions

Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha on Monday attempted to shrug off criticism of the humorous tone he used on Friday to announce new Covid-19 restrictions.

The PM signed off on Friday by using the word “naja” and smiling. “Naja” is normally used by women and children as a humorous suffix meant to soften their conversation.

Prayut’s use of the word to announce new disease controls triggered a wave of criticism from netizens, who accused him of making light of the virus crisis. The restrictions, which include a ban on restaurant dining in Bangkok and four surrounding provinces from Monday, are another blow to small businesses and public life.

Prayut’s humour and his government’s decision were hit by furious criticism across the social media world. On Monday, the hashtag #นะจ๊ะ (naja) was top-trending on Twitter, accompanied by enraged comments about the prime minister’s performance and the worsening Covid-19 situation in Thailand.

Responding to reporters’ questions on Monday, Prayut attempted to shrug off the criticism by repeating the offending word.

“I am not angry,” he said. “I work wholeheartedly, naja.”

        • PM orders B7.5bn of aid

Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha has insisted he is unfazed by critics of the government's handling of the worsening Covid-19 situation after some called on him to step down.

Critics have launched a broadside against the prime minister over the latest round of restrictions which deal a blow to eateries and restaurants.

Operators complained that they were caught off-guard as the curbs were announced in the Royal Gazette at 1am on Sunday.

Under the new restrictions which took effect on Monday and last 30 days, construction sites will also close temporarily while eateries and restaurants can only provide take-away services.

Gen Prayut insisted he was not discouraged by the criticism, particularly on social media.

"I am never fazed by anything. I will do my best for as long as I can. I love the people. I want nothing from them. I will work with everyone to take care of them," the prime minister said after a meeting of his economic team at Government House.

The government will now prioritise easing the impacts caused by the new restrictions in Bangkok and five surrounding provinces of Nonthaburi, Pathum Thani, Samut Prakan, Samut Sakhon and Nakhon Pathom during the next 30 days.

A 7.5-billion-baht relief package will be expedited to help those affected by the new curbs, the prime minister said, adding that construction workers' camps are being isolated due numerous infections diagnosed among their workforces.

He said further relief measures will also be launched in other provinces later.

"I am very concerned about eateries, particularly small food shops. Therefore, we have sought cooperation from the Thai Contractors Association for many of those businesses to send food to construction workers' camps to supplement their income," Gen Prayut said.

"I assure you that the government is doing its best to look after everyone and is ready to listen to opinions from all parties involved," he said, adding that the new relief package will go before the cabinet today.

Thaniwan Kulmongkol, president of the Thai Restaurant Association, posted on Facebook on Monday that operators of small, medium and large eateries have been all affected. "It is like being hit several times by lightning in broad daylight," she posted.

National Economic and Social Development Council secretary-general Danucha Pichayanan said after the prime minister's economic team meeting that a relief package worth 7.5 billion baht had been approved for restaurants, eateries and construction businesses affected in Bangkok and the five adjacent provinces.

The package covers employers and employees both in and outside the social security system.

Of the 7.5 billion baht, 4 billion will be drawn from the 1-trillion-baht loan and the rest will be allocated from the Social Security Fund. The relief package will be presented for cabinet approval today, Mr Danucha said.

Meanwhile, health authorities on Monday reported 22 more Covid-19 fatalities and 5,406 new transmissions around Thailand on Sunday, bringing the death toll to 1,934 and the number of cases since the start of the pandemic to 249,853.

It was also the third-highest number of new cases to be reported in a single day in Thailand, following 9,635 on May 17 and 5,485 on May 31.

The Centre for Covid-19 Situation Administration (CCSA) said 5,397 of the new infections were in the general population and only nine in prisons.: https://www.bangkokpost.com/thailand...-b7-5bn-of-aid

          • Prayut lands in Phuket to welcome first sandbox arrivals

Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha and his entourage landed in Phuket’s Thalang district at 10am on Thursday to visit local officials and witness the passenger screening process.

Phuket opened its doors to foreigners on Thursday for the first time since the start of the Covid-19 outbreak early last year. Tourists are allowed to land under a sandbox scheme if they can prove they have been fully inoculated against Covid-19 and test negative. Those approved can move freely on the island without having to quarantine.

After staying in Phuket for 14 days, they can travel to other provinces if they test negative for a second time.

“I realise that reopening Phuket is risky, but it is a risk we have to take for the sake of our country,” Prayut said. “The most important thing is to monitor the situation closely and act swiftly in case a situation emerges.

“We need to ensure that the sandbox scheme runs smoothly and contributes to the goal of fully reopening Thailand within 120 days,” added Prayut, referring to the promise he made in a June 16 televised public address on the Covid-19 situation. “If successful, data from this scheme will be gathered and shared among other provinces to design their reopening campaign.”

The premier first visited the Tha Chat Chai checkpoint before moving on to check out Phuket’s Emergency Operations Centre (EOC), which functions as a central unit to monitor tourists via the Thailand Plus and Mor Chana applications. All tourists must install the apps and allow themselves to be tracked on GPS during their entire stay.

Prayut also traveled to Royal Phuket City Hotel in Muang district to chair a meeting with provincial officers regarding the progress of the Phuket Sandbox scheme.

The Tourism Authority of Thailand reported that 300 foreigners are scheduled to land in Phuket on Thursday on Etihad Airways, Qatar Airways, El Al Israel Airlines and Singapore Airlines flights. The PM is scheduled to visit the airport in the evening to welcome tourists arriving on the Singapore Airlines flight.: https://www.nationthailand.com/in-focus/40002718

            • Photo of Prayut flouting social-distancing rules in Phuket sparks argument

Facebook user Siriwan Ruksat on Friday posted a photo of Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha and his entourage dining at a beachside restaurant in Phuket on Thursday.

Prayut was in the province to welcome tourists on the first day of the island opening under a sandbox scheme for fully vaccinated foreigners.

The restaurant that Prayut and his staff were spotted in is in Thalang district and faces the ocean. In the photo, Prayut and his team are eating and sitting close together, while some members of the party are without a mask.

This post sparked widespread criticism, with netizens slamming the PM and his entourage for violating disease control measures while leading a campaign that aims to promote Thailand as a safe destination.

“This is highly unacceptable. While restaurants in Bangkok are prohibited from allowing patrons to dine-in, the PM is out dining with no social distancing in Phuket,” one netizen posted.

Another netizen rose to Prayut’s defence, pointing out that Phuket is not a red zone so dining in does not break any rules, and urged critics to “stop attacking the government on every trivial detail”.

The original poster said that after the photo went viral, Public Health Minister Anutin Charnvirakul said everybody in the photo was actually sitting a fair distance from one another and that they have all been vaccinated against Covid-19.

“Most importantly, there is no rule against dining inside restaurants in Phuket as the province has already relaxed disease control measures,” Anutin added.: https://www.nationthailand.com/in-focus/40002765

              • PM Prayut self-isolating after selfie with Covid-positive business leader

Prayut was pictured in a selfie posted by Veerasak Pisanuwong, president of Surin’s Chamber of Commerce, at the Phuket “sandbox” opening ceremony on July 1.

Veerasak announced on Sunday that he took a swab test at Surin Hospital in the morning and the result came back positive at 4.30pm.

He was then admitted to the hospital for treatment.

Government spokesman Anucha Burapachaisri said on Monday that Prayut will continue to perform his duties from home and monitor the Covid-19 situation closely.

"The prime minister also asked citizens to strictly adhere to DMHTT practices, namely distancing, mask-wearing, hand washing, testing and ThaiChana check-in, even if they have been vaccinated," he said.: https://www.nationthailand.com/in-focus/40002857

                • Thai PM says tougher COVID-19 measures are necessary

Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha said today (Thursday) tougher measures are necessary to handle the rising COVID-19 infections and deaths over the past few weeks, as further restrictions proposed today by the Public Health Ministry are to be deliberated by the Centre for COVID-19 Situation Administration (CCSA) which he chairs tomorrow.

Currently on home quarantine, the prime minister said, in his Facebook post, that he has been keeping track of the COVID-19 situation in the country with growing concern and has been receiving information from all relevant agencies, so he can assess the situation and select appropriate measures to cope with the pandemic. Failing this, he said, the impacts on the people will be more serious.

He has assured the public that, before any restrictive measures are to be rolled out, the government will very carefully consider all the aspects concerned, particularly public safety, even if that means the economy and businesses will be affected.

Appealing for cooperation from everyone in Thailand, the prime minister said that no country can fight the COVID-19 alone or with just one person.

“The only thing which will mean we win this war (against coronavirus) is the unity of the people in the country, the discipline, the perseverance, cooperation and, more importantly, mindfulness in digesting news during this critical moment, when there are ill-intentioned elements bent on spreading fake news, aimed at causing misunderstanding and public confusion,” he wrote.: https://www.thaipbsworld.com/thai-pm...are-necessary/

                      • Prayut backtracks on mix-and-match vaccine strategy, gives it go-ahead

Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha changed his stance on Wednesday and told the Public Health Ministry to kick off its mix-and-match vaccine strategy to combat the fast-spreading Delta variant.

Government spokesman Anucha Burapachaisri Prayut also aimed to accelerate the procurement and distribution of vaccines among citizens. The premier has also ordered the collection of data related to the jabs, especially in relation to the elderly and people with chronic conditions.

"The government will look for the best way to tackle the spread of the Delta variant and will also boost public awareness,” Anucha said.

He added that Prayut had never sought to suspend the mix-and-match vaccine strategy.

“The prime minister has asked all parties to listen to the National Communicable Disease Committee's comments on the new strategy," Anucha added.

At the weekly Cabinet meeting on Tuesday, Prayut had instructed the Public Health Ministry to review its mix-and-match vaccine strategy in line with the World Health Organisation (WHO)’s recent statement.

WHO’s chief scientist Soumya Swaminathan had called this mixing of vaccines a “dangerous trend".

"We are in a bit of a data-free, evidence-free zone as far as mix-and-match is concerned," she said.

Meanwhile, Public Health Minister Anutin Charnvirakul pointed out that the National Communicable Disease Committee, which approved the mix-and-match, comprised doctors from both the public and private sectors.

Some ministers also said the government should take responsibility if people die from this mix-and-match strategy.

The Public Health Ministry had on Monday decided to change its strategy of providing two doses of Sinovac to making the second jab that of AstraZeneca.: https://www.nationthailand.com/in-focus/40003231
