Korat mass shooter shot dead, death tolls rose to 30
Monk claims Jakrapanth shot dead 9 people near temple in Korat
Sgt-Maj Jakrapanth Thomma allegedly shot dead nine people at Wat Pa Sattharam, in Tambon Hua Thaley in Muang district of Nakhon Ratchasima on Saturday, according to Phra Manaswin Thirungkulo, a monk at the temple, who claims he witnessed the shooting.
The monk said he was in the forest temple at the time Jakrapanth drove the stolen Humvee into its compound, parked the vehicle and alighted carrying an assault rifle.
The monk said he saw the trooper calmly load a magazine, raise his rifle and start shooting at vehicles and people on the road where he stood.
The monk claimed that Jakrapanth remained in the same spot, firing at passers-by and vehicles, for about half an hour. One student, riding a motorcycle, was shot and two policemen on a motorcycle were also shot, he said.
Mass shooting puts army officers' side deals under scrutiny
A soldier's killing of 29 people in a rage over a housing deal involving his superior officer has brought attention to the business dealings of army personnel.
The military, which staged its latest coups 2006 and 2014, wields extraordinary power in Thailand and proclaims its discipline to justify repeatedly overthrowing elected governments, but the killings on the weekend put a spotlight on some of its own members' questionable dealings.
Jakrapanth Thomma was meeting on Saturday with his commanding officer and the officer's mother-in-law to discuss their dispute when he opened fire, killing both of them. He then drove to his Surathampithak army camp, Wat Paa Sattharuam and the Terminal 21 shopping mall, gunning people down until security forces killed him on Sunday morning.
Hours before, Sgt Maj 1st Class Jakrapanth had posted on Facebook denouncing people who cheated others to become wealthy.
"Do they think they can spend the money in hell?" Sgt Major 1st Class Jakrapanth asked.
The military has a long tradition of involvement in business and it has been an open secret that some officers branch out into private business deals.
"It is actually quite common for senior military officers to be involved in real estate, especially in Thailand's rural areas," said Paul Chambers, a politics expert at Naresuan University in Phitsanulok.
The military is one of the largest land-holders in some provinces, controlling vast bases that also can be mini-cities unto themselves.
"Many officers tend to want to supplement their meagre salaries with money they can easily make through military power regarding real estate," Mr Chambers said.
Military discipline is regularly extolled by Prime Minister Gen Prayut Chan-o-cha, who launched the last coup in 2014 and last year retained power by leading a pro-army party to victory in an election opposition parties said was engineered to cement army influence.
One prominent opposition group, the Future Forward Party, has openly opposed military influence over politics, arguing for changes in the military-written constitution, an end to conscriptionBangkok Postsaid in an editorial that questionable personal deals were "the tip of the iceberg" and argued the military budget should be subject to independent audits, instead of the internal ones established by the last ruling junta.
The Thai military forces only exist for one reason.
Protection racket.
....anything else is but frosting.
Well, there's some fine folks who firmly believe Kao Prawehan should be returned to Thai ownership.
Squads of Royal Thai Army soldiers are standing by at the border.
God, the panic within the Dems, MSM, and left must be horrifying...realizing that Joe is really the best they've got.
Terminal 21 reopened for business on Thursday after the shopping centre was shut down by a gunman on Saturday, during a rampage that claimed 30 lives and left 58 people wounded.
Shopowners, well-wishers and officials first gathered at the mall in Muang district for a morale boosting "Korat Strong Together" event. It started with a merit-making rite by 219 monks, followed by chanting for good luck and a bai si blessing ceremony.
Many posters on social media made a point of promising to continue patronising the shopping complex, despite the weekend's nightmare events.
"Give everybody working at the mall my support to get through what has happened," Charto de Pratunam wrote on a Facebook account.
"When you don't leave the people of Korat, we won't leave you, either," Ittipon Weangsantia wrote.
Terminal 21 was the centre of the carnage on Saturday and into Sunday, as Sgt Maj 1st Class Jakrapanth Thomma sprayed hundreds of bullets at people shopping and working there after beginning his killing spree in an army camp.
I thought it was good to read some (the employees) are able to move back into regular daily lives with the opening of the mall after this horrible event that took place.
By the way peon clown, thanks for helping me turn the page.
