        Nation reporter detained

Nation demands immediate release of reporter
        September 14, 2015

The Nation newspaper on Monday called on the National Council for Peace and Order to immediately release its senior reporter, Pravit Rojanaphruk, after he was "invited" and then detained by the military on Sunday afternoon.Prayut Chan-o-cha in his capacity as chief of NCPO asking him to have Pravit immediately released. "We see this as a direct threat to press freedom," he said.

The Nation Monday morning contacted the military officer who summoned Pravit to demand details about the reasons behind Pravit's detention and his whereabouts. However, the officer declined to give any details though admitted that he had "invited" the reporter.

The officer said only the NCPO could give the details.

NCPO spokesman Col Winthai Suvari was contacted by The Nation around noon. He said he had yet not received a report about Pravit's detention. He would provide more information about the summons later.

This is the second time that the reporter has been summoned by the NCPO following the May 2014 coup.

Thailand's military government detains local reporter

            Sep 14

Winthai said in a text message to local journalists on Monday that Pravit and several other people had been taken in for discussions with the authorities because of statements they made violating the junta's policies on information.

He said that the length of Pravit's detention depended on how cooperative he was.

I have always thought and also read that freedom of speech and freedom of expression is the concept of inherent human right
to voice one's opinion either publicly or privately without fear of censorship, punishment or penalty.
It seems that this concept is unacceptable in certain places.

                    NCPO claims Pravit's detention justified
                    September 14, 2015

The National Council for Peace and Order Monday defended the detention of The Nation's reporter Pravit Rojanaphruk, saying he had disseminated information in a way that was not in accordance with the guideline for keeping peace and order.

But NCPO spokesman Col Winthai Suvari did not provide details of specific incidents that Pravit had disseminated such information.

Winthai said it was still uncertain how long Pravit would be detained, depending on results of investigations and Pravit's cooperation as well as evidence.

Winthai said Pravit had presented information against the NCPO's guideline more often recently.

"Sometimes, the information mentioned other persons or organisations. Such information could cause misunderstanding in society although there have been no proofs yet," Winthai said.

He added that the NCPO would have to seek cooperation from all sectors to ensure that there would be peace and order in the country.

The 48-year-old reporter earlier told BBC Thai that he decided to resign to end the pressure the company and his colleagues were facing. He would work at The Nation until the end of this month, ending his 23 years there.

Pravit tweets and posts on Facebook regularly about freedom of expression and the need to lift the lese majeste law.

He was summoned and detained once for seven days shortly after the May 22, 2014 coup. He has since been summoned by soldiers several times but not detained. On Sunday, Pravit was asked to report to the Army Region 1 headquarters and was detained for an attitude-adjustment session before being released on Tuesday.

Nation TV news anchor Kanok Ratwongsakul wrote on his Facebook page on Tuesday, the day Pravit was released, that a large group of employees wanted the management to adjust their role in dealing with Pravit.

He was referring to a statement released on Monday by The Nation

The Nation forces veteran journalist Pravit to quit@PravitR account in 2012.

On Wednesday 6pm, Pravit posted on his personal Facebook account that "I have decided to resign from The Nation newspaper after a meeting with the management and being requested to resign in order to save the paper from enormous pressure from all sides in the aftermath of being detained by the military junta. I care and love the paper I have been working for 23 years and if by this act I could help alleviate some pressure then I would gladly do so. There's only the issue of just compensation to be discussed and I thank The Nation for all the good and difficult times we shared and endured."
