Political ban fate awaits cremation - No decision until ceremony over: PM

The government will decide whether to lift restrictions on political activities only after the cremation ceremony of the late King in October, says Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha.

The premier made his remarks in response to National Legislative Assembly (NLA) president Pornpetch Wichitcholchai, who said earlier it is now up to the National Council for Peace and Order to decide whether to relax the ban on political activities. That came as the NLA-approved organic bill on political parties was forwarded to Gen Prayut on Tuesday. The legislation will next be forwarded to His Majesty the King for royal endorsement.

Gen Prayut said Thursday there is no plan to lift the ban at present and he receives weekly updates on the security situation from his deputy, Gen Prawit Wongsuwon.

He insisted the decision whether to lift the ban on political activities will be decided after the royal cremation ceremony, saying authorities will not allow political unrest to take root beforehand.

The premier said efforts were constantly being made to ward off any unrest as certain elements may be planning to "wreak havoc".

Referring to supporters of ex-premier Yingluck Shinawatra, who are expected to gather at the Supreme Court on Aug 25, when the ruling in her rice-pledging case is due to be handed down, Gen Prayut said he will not ban the gathering, but her supporters must abide by the law.

They cannot claim their right to assemble are unconditionally guaranteed by the charter, as they must also respect the law against public disobedience, he said.

They must avoid committing wrongdoing, infringing on the court's power or causing trouble for others, said Gen Prayut, adding people must not be hired to attend the gathering. Security officials will be instructed to question supporters at the court as to whether they were paid to take part, he said.

On Wednesday, the National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission (NBTC) decided to suspend Peace TV, a satellite-based television channel linked to the red-shirt United Front for Democracy against Dictatorship (UDD), for 30 days.

The suspension was based two of the channel's programmes, which were deemed to contain content dealing with plots to undermine the constitutional monarchy.

Tida Thawornseth, an adviser to the UDD, asked why the licence suspension came just ahead of the ruling in Ms Yingluck's rice-pledging case. Gen Prayut insisted the NBTC's decision had nothing to do with the ruling, adding the channel merely breached the regulator's rules.

Meanwhile, the Office of the Auditor-General was reported to have written to the Interior Ministry, asking it to examine some local administration organisations, which allegedly spent state funds transporting people to the court to show support for Ms Yingluck.

Meanwhile, Watana Muangsook, a key Pheu Thai figure, appeared Thursday before the Technology Crime Suppression Division to give an additional statement in connection with a case in which he was alleged to have posted messages on his Facebook page urging Ms Yingluck's supporters to converge on the court.
