Red-shirt leader's wife unaware of his whereabouts.
THE UDON THANI Provincial Court issued an arrest warrant yesterday for red-shirt leader Kwanchai Sarakham after he failed to show up to hear a Supreme Court verdict on a case in which he is accused of colluding in attempted murder and physical assault.
The case stems from an assault on a yellow-shirt gathering at a park in Udon Thani in July 2008. A group of yellow-shirt People's Alliance for Democracy filed the case against the defendant, who is also known as Kwanchai Praipana.
The court has scheduled the next reading of the verdict on June 28.
The court said an arrest warrant has been issued because Kwanchai failed to inform the court that he would not show up and did not seek to postpone the hearing. The bond for his bail release will also be confiscated, the court said.
In December 2011, the Criminal Court found Kwanchai guilty and sentenced him to four years in jail. The penalty was reduced to two years and eight months and he was fined Bt350,000 after he admitted to the crime.
The Appeals Court a year later upheld the lower court's verdict and released Kwanchai on a bail of Bt500,000.
Kwanchai's wife Arporn, his son Korawi and lawyers, as well as some 20 supporters showed up at the Udon Thani Provincial Court yesterday morning.
His wife said she did not know of Kwanchai's whereabouts and that she had last met him on May 19 in Bangkok.
"He told me that he wanted some time to meditate and come to terms with this matter," she said, adding that she has not spoken to him since.
Arporn added that if she is able to reach him again, she will tell him to attend the next hearing.
"He should consider what we talked about... what will be, will be," she said.
Charoen Mukachornpan, a yellow-shirt leader affiliated with the PAD, said yesterday that he respected the court's decision to give Kwanchai another chance by rescheduling the Supreme Court verdict, adding that he will be present at the next session.
Kwanchai, 63, had declared last month that he would not escape and would accept the court verdict, even if it means he will end up in prison.
He was last seen in public on April 28 at an event in Udon Thani that was attended by leaders of the rivalling red and yellow-shirt camps. At the event, held to encourage reconciliation, leaders of both sides held each other's hands in a symbolic gesture.

Soldiers acquitted for allegedly shooting red shirt
Fri, 27/05/2016
The Provincial Court in northeastern Thailand dismissed charges against five soldiers and a member of the Territorial Defence Volunteer Corps (TDVC) accused of shooting of a local redshirt leader.
The Provincial Court of the northeastern province of Udon Thani on Thursday, 26 May 2016, dismissed charges against five soldiers from a military base in the western province of Kanchanaburi and a TDVC member accused of shooting Kwanchai Sarakam, leader of People Who Love Udon Club, a local anti-establishment red shirt group.
The six were indicted for allegedly shooting Kwanchai in front of his house in Udon Thani on 22 January 2014. He was severely injured from the shooting, but survived.
The court reasoned that it could not be proven that the car believed to be used by the six suspects for the shooting is the same car that the perpetrators of the crime used.

This might be my last post on this thread until either this guy picks his phone up or the 28th of June when the final verdict will be read. Well, I might post again before the 28th
The Udon Thani Provincial Court today issued warrant for the arrest of a former active redshirt core leader Kwanchai Praipana after he did not show up to hear the final ruling in the case which he was accused of leading a group of redshirt protesters to assault yellow shirt demonstrators at a rally in Udon Thani province in 2011.
Kwanchai was earlier sentenced to four years in prison with no suspension of prison term, and 350,000 baht fine for the charge by the Court of First Instance. But his sentence was commuted by half due to his confession to the Crime.
He was granted temporary release on bail.
He appealed the sentence.
However the Appeals Court upheld the sentence of the first court.
He again appealed to the Supreme Court.
The ruling of the Supreme Court has been reached and an appointment has been set for today to hear the final verdict read by the Udon Thani Provincial Court today.
However Kwanchai did not appear to hear the verdict.
His wife and sons appeared in the court room instead amid a number of redshirt supporters.
His wife said she could not contact her husband and was uncertain if he could attend the hearing.
As the session started, the court called his name several times if he was present.
After there was no explanation from his guarantor, the court then adjourned the next hearing of the final verdict on June 28 at 9.00 am and issued warrant for his arrest.

Red-shirt Kwanchai, on the run, gets two years jail
The Supreme Court yesterday sentenced red-shirt activist Kwanchai Praipana in absentia to two years in jail and a fine of Bt350,00 for attempted murder and assault.
Seven yellow shirts had filed a lawsuit against Kwanchai for an attack at Nongprajak Park in Udon Thani in 2008 that had left many people seriously injured.
Both the Criminal and Appeals Courts found Kwanchai guilty and sentenced him to two years and eight months in jail as well as a fine of Bt350,000 plus 7.5 per cent interest.
Kwanchai was released on a Bt500,000 bail after he appealed the verdict at Supreme Court, but then failed to turn up to hear the verdict on May 24. In addition, his Bt500,000 bail guarantee was confiscated yesterday when he once again failed to show in court. However, his wife Aporn Sarakham and their son Korawee Sarakham were present.
Aporn said she did not know her husband's whereabouts, but knew he was in a safe place. He had called in to a radio station on June 13.
She said her husband may return to face the court once the country returns to "full democracy" because he had said he did not feel safe.

A Thai court on Tuesday sentenced two military men to jail for orchestrating an attack on villagers blockading a gold mine, a lawyer said, a rare ruling in favor of such activists.
On Tuesday, a provincial court sentenced Poramet Pomnak and Poramin Pomnak, a retired army officer and his son, a serving officer, to two and three years in prison respectively for their involvement in the attack, the community's lawyer told AFP.
