Thailand to recruit 10,000 foreign teachers to boost English standards of Thai kids

    Image: Daily News

Thailand's education minister has appealed to foreign embassies and other organisations to help him find an extra 3,000 foreign teachers to help schools teach English and other subjects in English.

After a meeting with embassies and other groups Natapol Teepsuwan said that 64 million baht was being spent on the project.

He said that at present there are 7,000 foreign teachers in the kingdom. He said this is not enough for his plan to raise standards.

He wants the number raised to 10,000.

He needs foreign teachers to teach Thai children and teach Thai teachers to teach English.

Natapol used the term "jao khong phasa" when referring to the teachers he wants. This means native speakers.

Thaivisa notes that in stories of this nature the devil is usually in the detail. The Daily News story was rather lacking in that.

It was not mentioned in the Daily News story where these teachers might come from.

Thailand has faced criticism in the past for hiring English teachers from other Asian countries, such as the Philippines, though no mention was made of this issue by Daily News.

They said that the education minister felt that if the foreign teachers he hires teach the Thais to be better English teachers, then by three years time he won't need so many foreigners to teach in Thai schools.

    a) Do the minister or any of his minions speak English themselves?
    b) Does the Minister of Education have a background in education?
    c) Are the minister or his minions connected in any way with agencies who will do the recruiting?
    d) Will any of the recruiting agencies know how to separate the uneducated, untrained chaff who will invariably show up for jobs from trained and experienced teachers?
    e) Do the minister or any of his minions know what teacher salaries are for native speakers in their home countries?
    f) Who did the research for this "plan"?
    g) Will local native-speaking retirees be tapped as a potential resource for, say, conversation classes?

Prediction: an enormous and expensive failure concocted by local politicians to line their pockets at the expense of taxpayers and...Thai children.

      Fashionably going through the motions.
Shouldn't even conceive of such a grand project.

Somchai has a point- the more angkrit they speak, the more they want to marry a farang. And the more they can.

Pay teachers more and perhaps they will get better quality ones..not saying that will happen either though.
I know I wouldn't work for 30,000 baht a month. I got a job offer for 80,000 a month in Bangkok and declined. I just can't be arsed to work in that pollution that is happening quite often now.

...80K a month in bkk just isn't enough...100K and you might find some trained and experienced teachers, not merely "native speakers" from the Cameroons...

I agree, but there are far and few schools that pay that.. usually the higher tiered International schools. If the Thai gov't wants teachers for the public schools, then 30-35,000 is what is offered. It isn't really that high. Many countries have perks like free accomodation, flights, etc.. but with the government schools they don't offer these. If they want higher quality education and teachers then many things have to change and not just the salaries. Class sizes are very big, curriculum books are near non-existent or very old school. I have researched all of it, and know expats who have taught in these government schools. This is what I hear from them.

...just another no-nothing minister spouting what he thinks might sound good to anyone paying attention and hoping to gain government contracts for his cronies...

Yes.. it is quite sad. Unless you are an expat that can afford the exorbitant fees to send their children into an international school, you are stuck with below par education. I know that Critical Thinking is not taught much if at all in the government schools, to keep the masses down and obedient.

Better check with Herr Anutin first. He has a bit of a downer on dirty westerners right now. Apparently , we are a shower that don't shower.

I've got a hairbrained skeem. Neither of us needs to know how to spell hair brains or braids for that matter.
Here it is" Paint Ball Laos!"

It's a body and mind experience where I, we, take groups of you and your coworkers out into the back streets, the alleyways, the fields the deep dark woods and we paint ball in Laos.
The emphasis being on teem work and split second decision making. We fast boat up and down rivers, sleep in the jungle, eat what we catch like snakes and ants and the fish of course.

I believe we could make a killing off this hair brained scheme. Just need enough CO2.
