  • Butterflies of NE Thailand

I thought I'd share a few photos of the butterflies I snapped during my wandering around the local village. Apart from a few ventures into secondary woodland, the majority are taken from the roadside or land around the local ponds. It isn't really the season for butterflies and they can alter colours considerably in the dry season but I was surprised how many were around.

I am still learning to identify the different species in Thailand and so there may be a few errors in the naming. Feel free to correct them as you see fit.

I have nearly 50 species so I'll post them as and when I have time. Feel free to add any that you happen to find and I will try and identify them if I can.

    Pansies

I am missing a Yellow Pansy, but here are the others:

    Pansy_Blue_e1.jpg

    Blue Pansy (Junonia Orithya)

    Pansy_Grey_a3.jpg

    Grey Pansy (Junonia Atlites)

    Pansy_Lemon_1.jpg

    Lemon Pansy (Junonia Lemonias)

    Pansy_Peacock_2.jpg

    Peacock Pansy (Junonia Almana)

The Peacock Pansy was taken in the garden of the Charoen Hotel in Udon with my kit lens. The others are with my Sigma 105mm macro on a Nikon 5300d

      Malayan_Lacewing_b3.jpg

Malayan Lacewing (Cethosia Hypsea). The species needs confirming with a better book than I have at the moment. I have seen them with a darker orange hindwing as well as a paler yellow and a white variant. There are several species as well as variations between male and female.

      Tawny_Coster_1.jpg

Tawny Coster (Acraea Terpsicore). This was taken on some waste ground in BKK and not in the village.

      Tawny_Coster_3.jpg

Same butterfly and not the best focussed but I liked the use of the wings as speedbrakes...

        Tailed_Jay_5.jpg

Tailed Jay (Graphium Agamemnon). Took a lot of patience to get this one as it doesn't settle and the wings are constantly "buzzing" whilst feeding. Worse, it only came to feed for about 10 minutes each day so I was quite pleased to finally snap it.

        Common_Rose_c5.jpg

Common Rose (Pachliopta Aristolochiae) was another one that wasn't on the hedgerow for long but seen flying around and eluding the camera for several days.

        Lime_Butterfly_f4.jpg

Lime Butterfly (Papilo Demoleus) as the name suggests is seen around citrus trees (and considered a pest).

          Common_Lascar_2.jpg

          Common Lascar (Pantoporia Hordonia)

          Sailer_Common_4.jpg

Common Sailer (Neptis Hylas)... The book I have also mentions a Malayan sailer, which has a brown underside instead of black....

          Sailer_Malayan_d4.jpg

I found that the ones with black undersides never seemed to fold there wings for long enough for me to get a good picture. I will try and snap one so that you can see the difference (the ones I have at the moment have too much sunlight and taken with the wings open)

          Grey_Count_c4.jpg

Grey Count (Tanaecia Lepidea)... I was hoping for a similar looking common earl but haven't managed to find one. However, I have managed to get this...

          Yellow_Archduke_d7.jpg

Yellow Archduke (Lexias Canescens) I think, rather than a similar looking female Archduke (Lexias Pardalis) but I need to confirm this with a better book.

Nice photos, Troy. I struggle with Thai butterflies - partly because they rarely keep still long enough for me to photograph them and partly because I don't recognise many of the species. How did you identify them, Troy? Do you have a guidebook or have you found a good website to help you?

Edit.. Now I see you mentioned a book. Which book do you use, Troy?

For those into a bit of butterfly porn....

              Biggs_Brownwing_2.jpg

              Biggs' Brownwing (Miletus biggiis)

              Common_Pierrot_b3.jpg

              Common Pierrot (Castalius rosimon)

              Psyche_d2.jpg

Psyche (Leptosia nina) This was earlier in the morning inside woodland while it was still napping.

              Autumn_Leaf_c1.jpg

I think this is an Autumn Leaf (Doleschallia bisaltide) but I need to confirm because of the dry season colouring. Again, taken inside the woodland and in darker conditions than I would have liked so focus proved to be less than I wished. First shot and then it was off and I lost track pretty quickly amongst all the leaves.

At the moment I have: "A Naturalist's Guide to the Butterflies of Thailand and SE Asia" by Laurance G Kirton. It mentions some reference websites and I will post some links to these soon.

                    Crows

                    Crow_Long_Branded_Blue_1small.jpg

                    Long-branded Blue Crow (Euploea algae)

                    Crow_Lesser_Striped_Black_e2.jpg

Lesser Striped Black Crow (Euploea eyndhovii)

                    Crow_Striped_Blue_c1.jpg

Striped Blue Crow (Euploea mulciber). The open wing shot I have of this one is out of focus but confirms the species.

I have seen a larger black crow, which could be a spotted black or a great crow. It has managed to elude the lens so far but I hope to get a photo of it over New Year.

                      Tigers

                      Tiger_Plain_2.jpg

Plain Tiger (Danaus chrysippus) ... This one was taken on wasteland in BKK but they are pretty common around the village as well.

                      Tiger_Dark_Blue_6.jpg

                      Dark Blue Tiger (Tirumala septentrionis)

                      Tiger_Ceylon_Blue_Glassy_f2.jpg

Lurking in there somewhere is (I think) a Ceylon Blue Glassy Tiger (Ideopsis similis) but I need to confirm that and get a better photo while I'm at it.

Striped Albatross (Appias libythea) found on wasteland in BKK rather than the village, where I have seen them albeit a lot more worse for wear.

Yellow Orange Tip (Ixias pyrene verna).

                          Common Yellows?

I am having trouble identifying the different grass yellows. The book I have is sketchy and the sites I have checked so far don't give me the best of answers with most showing the wings open rather than closed.

                          Grass_Yellow_Common_2.jpg

                          Common Grass Yellow (Eurema hecabe)

                          Grass_Yellow_Changeable_a2.jpg

Changeable Grass Yellow (Eurema simulatrix) but need to confirm

                          Grass_Yellow_ID_5.jpg

Talbot's Grass Yellow (Eurema ada) is my guess at this one. It was taken on wasteland in BKK and not the village where it is not likely to be seen.

                          Grass_Yellow_ID_2.jpg

Another Grass Yellow (Eurema ...) but still looking to see which one.

                            Common_Red_Flash_1.jpg

                            Common Red Flash (Rapala iarbus)

Ever wondered about the tails seen on some of the butterflies?

                            Common_Red_Flash_3.jpg

This is a slightly better view of the tail with the hope that a predator will mistake it for the head ...

                            Common_Red_Flash_4.jpg

... and the butterfly living to see another day.

                              Common_Five_Ring_c1.jpg

Common Five Ring (Ypthima baldus). There are several species of Ypthima with a different number of rings and they are difficult to separate, especially in the dry season when the spots aren't clear. I have a couple of others and one that looks more like a speckled wood that I need to identify.
