  • What Are You Reading?

At the moment I've got two books going:

A World Of Trouble - A novel in the Jack Shepherd series by Jake Needham. These novels take place mostly in Thailand and are thrillers of sort. I've really enjoyed the series so far. This one concerns the political and other machinations of a Thaksin-like former Thai PM. The action begins in Dubai and moves on to Bangkok and Hong Kong.

Early Thailand - From Prehistory to Sukhothai - I was hoping this would give a general overview of the prehistory and early history of Thailand and the people who came here. It does that, but it turns out to mostly be a history of the archaeology of Thailand. It contains copious information on various digs around the country including minute detail on exactly what was discovered at various sites. IMHO this kind of detail belongs in a scholarly paper or scientific journal, not in a popular history book. I'm wading through it, but it's not easy.

How about you? What's on your nightstand?

Actually I am rereading the Hobbit and the Lord of the Rings Trilogy. I read all of them 30 some years ago and decided to revisit the series. So far the Hobbit is better this time around.

In the Shadow of the Sword

In the Shadow of the Sword by Tom Holland. A heavyweight about the history behind the emergence of Christianity and Islam, the late Roman Empire and Persia. Tough going, but very interesting. Fills in some interesting gaps (like why Father, Son and Holy Ghost are considered to be 'one'), why there is no contemporary history for the emergence of Islam, how the Arabs were viewed by Romans and Persians, and how the Jews fitted into the mix. Not a pro Christian (or pro any religion) book: just a very detailed history that explains why these religions have been the cause of so much conflict for thousands of years.

            ?
Can't find these these - but I do like books with 'exotic' locales

Currently reading 'Die Stalingrad Protokolle' by S. Fischer, quite a tome about the Russian/Soviet side of the battle(s) of Stalingrad. Not usually my preferred genre, but I picked it up at a resort I stayed at a few weeks ago . . . and t's a good way to keep my German skills intact.

Lately I've been racing through the Jack Reacher series by Lee Childs. Most recent was 61 Hours, which was quite nice. (I think it won the Theakston Mystery prize a few years back.)

I've also been enjoying the Harry Hole series by Jo Nesbo, one of which (Cockraoches?) takes place in Bangkok.

I just started The Falls, which is on of the Inspector Rebus crime novels by Ian Rankin.

For something completely different I just read The Housekeeper and the Professor by Yoko Ogawa.

I have to say that the ability to get ebooks instantly has completely changed my reading habits. I'm reading a lot more now that I can get anything I want, any time, any place.

It sure is. I can remembering making my move to Thailand when I brought a horde of books with me in my check in and carry on. If I had a Kindle, I could have left all that extra weight back home and saved myself the extra baggage costs and headache.

                            Books

Maybe it's worth buying up books now, they may be worth something in the future.
