    • Cuomo Rips DeSantis On COVID-19 Spike: ‘You Played Politics With This Virus And You Lost’

New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo (D) on Thursday had choice words for Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis (R) and other Republican governors as coronavirus cases in several states spike.

During an interview on CNN on Thursday, Cuomo discussed the 14-day mandatory quarantine that he and other governors in the tri-state area instituted, which required travelers coming from coronavirus “hot spots” including Florida, Arizona and Texas to self-quarantine for two weeks.

Cuomo was then asked about his displeasure with DeSantis when he ordered a ban on travelers coming from New York. Cuomo responded that he said three months ago that “we’re playing politics with the virus and the virus is going to win.”

After a clip played of DeSantis saying “New York media was blowing a gasket” when he ordered a mandatory quarantine for those traveling from New York to Florida, Cuomo was pressed on what he would say to the Florida governor now that COVID-19 cases hit a new record in his state.

On Wednesday, Florida recorded more than 5,500 single day coronavirus cases. On average, Florida recorded over 3,000 cases per day in the past week.

Cuomo dug deeper into his criticism of DeSantis and other Republican governors for their approach to easing up coronavirus-related restrictions.

“I say to them all: Look at the numbers,” Cuomo said. “You played politics with this virus and you lost.”

Cuomo continued his tear by railing against Republican governors for treating the severity of the COVID-19 pandemic as “Democratic hyperbole.”

“You told the people of your state, and you told the people of this country, White House, ‘Don’t worry about it. Just open up, go about your business, this is all Democratic hyperbole,'” Cuomo said. “Oh, really? Now you see 27 states with the numbers going up. You see the death projections going up. You see the economy going down. It was never politics. It was always science. And they were in denial, and denial is not a life strategy.”: https://talkingpointsmemo.com/news/c...19-cases-spike

Florida teen dies after conspiracy theorist mom takes her to church ‘COVID party’ and tries to treat her with Trump-approved drug

A Florida mother allegedly took her high-risk teenage daughter to a “COVID party” at their church, tried treating the girl at home with unproven drugs when she got sick — and then hailed her as a patriot after she died.

Carsyn Davis died June 23, two days after her 17th birthday, after she contracted the coronavirus, reported the News-Press, but former Florida data scientist Rebekah Jones detailed shocking claims in a medical examiner’s report about her illness.

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement investigated the teen’s last two weeks in the medical examiner’s report, which Jones said shows her mother, Carole Brunton Davis, had taken her on June 10 to a church-sponsored event to intentionally expose her immunocompromised daughter, who had survived cancer at 2, to the potentially deadly coronavirus.

More than 100 mask-free children attended the event, and Davis allegedly gave her daughter azithromycin, an anti-bacterial drug with no known benefits for fighting COVID-19, after she developed headaches, sinus pressure and a cough, Jones reported.

Davis — whose Facebook page is awash in QAnon conspiracy theories, anti-vaccine and coronavirus misinformation and dubious legal theories — next put the girl on her grandfather’s oxygen machine after she “looked gray” on June 19, Jones reported.

Then she gave the girl hydroxychloroquine, an antimalarial drug touted as a cure by President Donald Trump, despite evidence of deadly side effects, and Carsyn’s condition worsened.

Davis finally took her daughter to a hospital, where she was admitted to a pediatric intensive-care unit — but declined intubation until it was too late, Jones wrote.

The hospital started plasma therapy on June 20 and 21, Jones reported, but Carsyn’s cardio-respiratory system was too seriously damaged and she died June 22.: https://www.rawstory.com/2020/07/flo...d-drug-report/ - https://twitter.com/GeoRebekah/statu...67533576196097 - https://floridacovidvictims.com/2020...n-leigh-davis/

          New details

I’ll just post some that were not mentioned in the original article.

The church appears to have removed YouTube videos of the June 10 event, and shut down their Instagram and Facebook pages after reports linking Carsyn’s illness to the event — which did not appear to violate state guidelines for public gatherings.

The medical examiner’s report shows the girl’s mother, Carole Brunton Davis, and father gave their daughter azithromycin, an antibiotic being studied as a possible COVID-19 treatment, as a protective measure.

The girl’s mother — whose Facebook page is awash in QAnon conspiracy theories, anti-vaccine and coronavirus misinformation and dubious legal theories — works as a nurse, and her father, whose name has not been revealed in news reports, works as a physician’s assistant.

The report did not show how the girl had a prescription for either drug, and didn’t specify how the family obtained them.: https://www.rawstory.com/2020/07/new...r-coronavirus/

‘DeSantis should step down’: Florida’s GOP governor blasted as coronavirus surges across the state

Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis was blasted on Sunday after Florida recorded the largest single-day coronavirus infection number of any state during the COVID-19 pandemic.

“Florida hit an alarming one-day high on Sunday with 15,300 new coronavirus cases, shattering both the state and national record for new cases reported since the start of the pandemic,” the Sun Sentinel reported Sunday. “With Sunday’s staggering surge in new cases, Florida eclipsed New York’s coronavirus peak of 12,274 cases on April 4.”

The newspaper noted at least 4,346 people have died from coronavirus in Florida.: https://www.rawstory.com/2020/07/des...oss-the-state/

Miami Man Lied to Get $3.9M in Coronavirus Loans, Bought Lamborghini

David T. Hines, 29, was arrested and charged with bank fraud, making false statements to a financial institution and engaging in transactions in unlawful proceeds

A South Florida man fraudulently obtained $3.9 million in federal coronavirus relief loans, using some of the money to buy a $318,000 Lamborghini Huracan, prosecutors said.

David T. Hines, 29, of Miami, was arrested and charged last week with bank fraud, making false statements to a financial institution and engaging in transactions in unlawful proceeds.

Defense attorney Chad Piotrowski said Hines is a legitimate business owner who is anxious to tell his side of the story.

Hines applied to a bank for approximately $13.5 million in Paycheck Protection Program loans on behalf of different companies, according to a criminal complaint. Fraudulent loan applications were submitted about the companies’ respective payroll expenses, investigators said. Hines was approved for $3.9 million, officials said.

Hines bought the Lamborghini within days of the receiving the money, prosecutors said. Instead of using the money for payroll payments, Hines made purchases at luxury retailers and resorts in Miami Beach, officials said. Authorities seized the car and about $3.4 million when Hines was arrested.

The Paycheck Protection Program represents billions of dollars in forgivable small business loans for Americans struggling because of the COVID-19 pandemic. It's part of the Coronavirus Aid, Relief and Economic Security Act, which became federal law in March.

It's not the first time Hines has been in trouble with the law. Two years ago he was arrested for allegedly fleeing from Miami Beach Police after he reported his girlfriend had stolen his Lamborghini.: https://www.nbcmiami.com/news/local/...utors/2268740/

Florida Case Count Surpasses That Of New York, The Country's Original Epicenter

Florida has recorded more coronavirus cases than New York. Only California, the most populous state in the country, has more.

As of Sunday afternoon, data from Johns Hopkins University shows 423,855 people in Florida have tested positive for the coronavirus, compared to 411,736 in New York. California leads with 450,242 cases.

New York, once the epicenter of the outbreak in the U.S., managed to bring the number of deaths and hospitalizations under control in late spring, as cases began to surge in many Western and Southern states.

Earlier this month, Florida reported 15,299 new resident cases in one day, marking the largest single-day increase in any state since the start of the pandemic and overshadowing a record New York had set in April. It has recorded more than 9,000 new cases per day since then.

And its death toll is starting to catch up. On Thursday, Florida reported 173 new deaths, its largest increase in a single day.

Florida logged 9,338 new cases among residents and 77 new deaths on Sunday, while New York's latest daily numbers reflect 536 new cases and three deaths.

Leaders in each state have dealt with the pandemic using starkly different strategies.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo gradually lifted New York's stay-at-home order on a regional basis in May, with New York City becoming the last region to enter Phase One of reopening in early June. New Yorkers have been under statewide orders to wear face coverings in public since April, and the state will decide next week whether to reopen schools in the fall.

In most of Florida, businesses such as restaurants and retail stores could open starting in May, and Gov. Ron DeSantis has resisted calls to impose a statewide mask mandate and other restrictions as cases surge.: https://www.npr.org/sections/coronav...inal-epicenter

'White Supremacist' Trump Supporter Gets Choked In Florida After Slapping Woman

A self-proclaimed white supremacist who said he supports President Donald Trump was reportedly arrested after he was seen on camera punching a woman.

The incident was said to have occurred in Sarasota County, Florida on Friday.

A self-proclaimed white supremacist who said he supports President Donald Trump was reportedly arrested after he was seen on camera punching a woman.

In video shared on social media, a man identified as Nicholas Aaron Schock can be heard demanding employees of an establishment "call Donald Trump" after he is asked not to expose himself to children.

“I’m a white supremacist!” Schock shouts. “The Aryan nation will rule the world!”

"If you don't know Donald Trump, I'm not going nowhere," he says.

When a woman warns Schock that children are nearby, he slaps slaps the woman with an open hand. Several men quickly tackle Schock to the ground, where is put into a chokehold.

                      • Florida Man Allegedly Told Teen to Remove Mask, Left Spit on His Face: 'You Now Have Coronavirus'

A Florida man has been accused of grabbing a minor wearing a mask at a restaurant in Treasure Island, getting so close to the teenager's face that he left spit on him.

The incident, which took place Sunday night at Ricky T's restaurant and bar, resulted in 47-year-old Jason Andrew Copenhaver's arrest. According to Treasure Island police, Copenhaver was arrested on charges of simple battery and disorderly conduct.

Copenhaver, who appeared to be intoxicated and was not wearing shoes, approached a 16-year-old boy, who was wearing a mask, at one of the tables and asked if the child was wearing a mask, according to arrest reports. When the teen replied to say he was, Copenhaver insisted he take it off.

The minor refused to comply, to which Copenhaver then grabbed the teen's hand, telling him he now had coronavirus.

"Victim stated that [Copenhaver] was in such close proximity that spit particles from [Copenhaver's] mouth landed in his face," officers wrote in the report.

Copenhaver told officers he has never been tested for COVID-19.

After harassing the minor, he reportedly walked to the bar area and tried to hit one a restaurant staff member. He was escorted out of the restaurant by employees, where he remained until police arrived on the scene.

According to Ricky T's website, all customers are required by the county to wear masks before being seated for service, a mandate Copenhaver failed to follow.

"In order for us to be compliant with Pinellas County Ordinance 20-14 all of our guests must wear a mask for service, once seated and properly social distancing the mask may be removed to enjoy food, beverage and good company," the website reads.

The Pinellas County Board of County Commissioners passed an emergency ordinance requiring face coverings in public spaces on June 23.

Records indicate that Copenhaver was booked into the Pinellas County Jail, but was released after posting bail.

Newsweek reached out to the Treasure Island Police Department for comment but did not hear back before publication.

As of Tuesday, August 4, the county has reported 17,047 confirmed cases of coronavirus and 460 deaths, according to data from Florida's Department of Health.: https://www.newsweek.com/florida-man...avirus-1522800

Black leopard mauls Florida man who paid $150 to have "full contact experience"

A 50-year-old man has filed a lawsuit after wildlife officials say he was mauled by a captive black leopard in a backyard animal enclosure in South Florida. Dwight Turner paid $150 for a "full contact experience" with the black leopard, which allowed him to "play with it, rub its belly and take pictures," WPLG reported.

A report by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission says the incident happened Aug. 31 in Davie, which is near Fort Lauderdale. The agency charged the owner with allowing full contact with an extremely dangerous animal and was cited for maintaining captive wildlife in an unsafe condition.

WPLG reports that Turner is now suing the owner of the leopard.

The owner, Michael Poggi, has a Facebook page which claims he runs an "animal sanctuary" for rare and endangered animals at the home.

According to the International Union for Conservation of Nature's Red List of Threatened Species, leopards are classified as critically endangered, and black cats are very rare.

The man was attacked as soon as he entered the leopard's enclosure. The injuries were so severe that his scalp was "hanging from his head and his right ear was torn in half," the report said.

He required multiple surgeries, according to the TV station.: https://www.cbsnews.com/news/captive...n-florida-zoo/

Video shows Florida man rescue puppy from alligator

A Florida man was caught on surveillance video jumping into a pond to rescue his 3-month-old puppy from the jaws of an alligator.

Richard Wilbanks told WINK News when an alligator grabbed his dog his instincts and adrenaline kicked in. He ran into the pond in his backyard and rescued his Cavalier King Charles spaniel puppy Gunner from the alligator.

CNN said Wilbanks told them holding the alligator once he got it wasn't the hard part, it was prying open its jaws.

After he got the puppy free, the two were mostly unharmed.

CNN said Wilbanks' hands were a little chewed up and he had to get a tetanus shot. As for Gunner, CNN said all he had was a puncture to his stomach and is doing fine after a trip to the vet.

Wilbanks told WINK News this was a learning experience for him. He told CNN now he keeps Gunner on a leash when they walk and they stay 10 feet away from the pond.

The video was caught because of a partnership Florida Wildlife Federation and the fSTOP Foundation and their campaign called “Sharing the Landscape.” Meredith Budd with the Florida Wildlife Federation told WINK it's usual for them to see other animals like deer and bobcats on their cameras. But, this encounter wasn't something they'd normally see.

“We live on a shared landscape,” Budd told WINK News. “We don’t just want to tolerate wildlife, but, rather, we want to thrive with wildlife on a shared landscape.”

It's a mission Wilbanks says he agrees with and understands. He told WINK News he knows his pond is the gator's home and it was just following its instincts when it grabbed Gunner. That's why he said he isn't going to call the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission about it.

According to FWC, even though Floridians and alligators have learned to coexist, there can sometimes still be conflict.

After police raid, data analyst’s GoFundMe grows by $200,000

Since May, Jones has organized two fundraisers on GoFundMe and raised nearly $500,000 in donations, fueled by a Twitter account with more than 340,000 followers, including former Star Trek legend George Takei.

The raid by state police of the Tallahassee home of Florida data analyst Rebekah Jones has helped her raise more than $200,000 in two days in a new GoFundMe account and revived her national celebrity.

Jones, who was fired from her role running the COVID dashboard at the Florida Department of Health in May after accusing Gov. Ron DeSantis’ administration of trying to manipulate state data to downplay the severity of the coronavirus, has spent much of the week appearing on national cable shows and talking with her lawyers, which now includes Tallahassee criminal defense lawyer Stephen Dobson.

Since May, Jones has organized two fundraisers on GoFundMe and raised nearly $500,000 in donations, fueled by a Twitter account with more than 340,000 followers, including former Star Trek legend George Takei.

“Rebekah Jones was fired for refusing to manipulate COVID-19 data for the state of FL,’' Takei wrote on Twitter late Monday to his 3.2 million followers. “She began publishing her own dashboard. Then they raided her home. To support her work and to give the finger to DeSantis and his gestapo, donate to her project here,’' and included the link.

Police said they were investigating whether Jones had unauthorized access to a state emergency messaging system and sent a message to her former colleagues urging them to “be a hero” and speak out about the coronavirus.

Florida officials have denied her claims that they were suppressing data and accused her of insubordination and failing to consult with agency epidemiologists. But since her firing, she’s earned a national reputation as DeSantis’ critic, creating her own dashboard using the state’s coronavirus statistics.

Jones maintains she did not gain illegal entry into a state emergency system as alleged by Florida law enforcement.

She admitted that she had access to the system when she was a Department of Health employee, but said she has not accessed it since she was fired in May. And, she says she did not send the Nov. 10 message that urged employees to “speak up” about COVID-19 deaths.

Investigators claim they have a trail
Though state investigators say the IP address — essentially a digital fingerprint — that was used to send the unauthorized message led them to Jones’ Tallahassee home. Florida Department of Law Enforcement spokeswoman Gretl Plessinger said investigators subpoenaed Comcast to conclude it was Jones’ IP address.

Jones has noted in her fundraising pages that the money is meant to help her pay for computer hardware, bills, attorney fees or, in the case that she is charged and imprisoned, financial help for her family.

“The money is just rolling in,’' said Rick Johnson, one of her lawyers. “I’ve got people emailing me offering to donate big sums of money and buy her computers. I can’t go through my Facebook feed without seeing 10 long threads.”

Jones’ most recent fundraiser was created on Tuesday, a day after law enforcement agents raided her home. As of Wednesday evening, she had raised $201,645 from more than 5,000 donors. Her fundraising goal is $1 million, and contributions range from $5 to $10,000.

In an interview Wednesday, Jones said she set a $1 million fundraising goal because she is facing hefty legal fees, including $50,000 to retain Dobson.

She said Dobson told her legal proceedings could “drag on for years” and she said the money aims to cover the costs of attorney fees, a potential bail bond if she ends up facing charges, as well as other costs.

“If the governor manages to invent something to lock me away, my family will need help,” Jones wrote Tuesday on the fundraising page.

Jones said the money raised in that account will also go toward a new computer. A search warrant inventory obtained by the Times/Herald on Wednesday shows that police confiscated two laptops, two smart phones, three thumb drives, two SD cards, and an HP tower when they searched her home.

                                More than one account

Jones has also raised $249,441 through a separate GoFundMe account that was created in late May. She said the money raised in that account was set up to help her pay her bills after being fired for “refusing to manipulate COVID-19 data for the Florida plan to prematurely reopen the state.”

“We need to un-mix our money pots to make sure all rules are properly followed, all taxes properly paid, etc, etc.,” Jones noted in the May fundraiser.

In addition to fundraisers, Jones is accepting checks from supporters. She asks them to mail the checks to a post office box in Tallahassee that doubles as the mailing address for her company, Florida COVID Action LLC. The company was created in July, and lists both her and her husband, Jacob Romer, as the lone officers. It is impossible to track how much money she has received from checks.

The company’s website says it is paid “entirely by crowd-sourcing from the public.”

“Your support allows us to purchase the hardware, software and services needed to keep our site up and going, and pay our chief founder for her 12-hour days of work, every day of the week,” the website says.

Cybersecurity experts told the Times/Herald that the state’s messaging platform featured lax security measures — with employees all using the same username and password to gain access — that a breach was almost certain to happen.

Still, unauthorized access — even with an old password — could potentially be charged as a felony, said Stewart Baker, former general counsel for the National Security Agency.

Johnson, Jones’ attorney, said Jones has not been charged with any crime, and Dobson is working to protect her confidential conversations with her attorneys and former colleagues from being used by the state.

He said the lax security will make it difficult for the state to suggest it was a breach.

“She could have gotten in if she wanted to,’' he said. “Because once you have access you never lose it. So they can’t even fault her because with their permission she had access even after she left.”

The Department of Health has not responded to questions on how often passwords are changed to access the system. Jones said the password to access the multi-platform system is changed every month and that it “would be written on a whiteboard.”

                                Wasserman Schultz wants investigation
Meanwhile, Florida Congresswoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz said she wants Congress to investigate the claims of data cover-up and what she called DeSantis’ “abuse of power” in his treatment of Jones.

“Gov. DeSantis’ mishandling of the coronavirus in Florida has made him a global laughingstock and has caused so much needless suffering and death in our state,’' Wasserman Schultz wrote in a statement. “Now, beyond just deadly incompetence, it appears that he has chosen to abuse Florida’s law enforcement and judicial systems to persecute Rebekah Jones, a scientist who dared to critique his oft-maligned and suspect COVID-19 data.”

She added that, “given the timid complicity and lack of oversight from the Republican-controlled Legislature, the governor’s abuse of power must be investigated immediately by Florida’s relevant inspectors general.”

A spokesperson for Wasserman Schultz said she is exploring various federal-level investigative options, such as agencies whose inspectors general oversee state COVID funds or congressional committees that provide oversight.

“Our state is in a public health emergency,’' Wasserman Schultz said. “And rather than use his executive power to protect Floridians, DeSantis abuses it to attack scientists who dare to sound the alarm about Florida’s inept, dangerous response and apparent manipulation of data. That is not leadership; it is autocratic repression.”: https://www.tampabay.com/news/florid...ows-by-200000/
