  • Hualien, Taiwan

I spent December in Taiwan, my second favourite Asian country (Singapore and Hong Kong being #3and4), including a week in Hualien on the cloudy windy east coast and a week in Taichung in the central West coast, away from my usual southern base camp of Kaohsiung.

Taiwan feels somewhat similar to Malaysia due to its mountains and large number of Chinese, but also different due to being quite Japanese in nature whereas Malaysia is more European-style multicultural.

It was my first time in Hualien but I loved it. The west of Taiwan is quite busy, industrial and can get air pollution both self-generated and blown in from its communist shithole neighbour, whereas the east coast is next to the Pacific and protected from China's pollution by the central mountains. This does mean quite a rainy climate though, which is fine for Brits used to no dry season.

Temperatures were about 17C in the mornings and 24C in the afternoon, perfection. Taiwan is fortunate enough to have a subtropical cool season that lasts for more than half the year which doesn't require being landlocked and smog filled as per some cities in SE Asia with cool seasons that last for several months. From May to September its hot wet and tropical.

Great transport links to the rest of the island.

And 7-elevens/familymarts everywhere with toilets and eating areas.

Perfect weather to take the dog for an afternoon romp in the mountains.

The Republic of China definitely lives up to its official name. This is the authentic China, not the big place that joined the USSR in the mid 20th century.

This temple is at the top of Taroko Gorge, probably the most impressive natural phenomenon I've ever seen.

A few gorge photos. They don't do it justice, and it requires a visit.

Doubtful. Read up on it https://edition.cnn.com/2019/06/23/a...hnk/index.html

China would also set itself back decades economically if it tried to invade, due to being shunned by the world.

...nonsense: some *tsk-tsking* maybe, but that's it...the US is the main (and only) deterrent to a mainland invasion...
