Then Taiwan might as well just surrender. But actually the Taiwanese defence forces are no slouch. The military & economic cost of invasion would not justify it for quite a while yet. China will just gradually encircle them instead.

...that sounds more likely...with the "gradual" part due to US support...

What a beautiful place! I have read up on Hualien and Tarako Gorge quite a bit. As Taiwan was the first place I researched teaching in before I went to SK. I know a few friends that have visited Tarako Gorge. It is indeed quite stunning. More pics please if you have them. I have read that the road up in the mountains is a bit scary as it is known to have landslides and rockslides at time as well as floods.

              Here's a couple.

I think Hualien would be my retirement choice were I choosing Taiwan over Malaysia. I'll keep it for a regular trips destination instead.

It actually reminds me a bit of the Torrens Gorge, in the Adelaide Hills.

The only thing that scared me is how fragile it looks to have dozens of buses thundering along it every day. It was built decades ago.

Brings back memories. I did a 1 week coach tour down the East Coast and Taroko gorge ending with a ride over the mountains back to Taipei.

I was accompanied by the Lovely ' Kitten ' who I met working in a restaurant a few weeks earlier. All ended badly as I had to flee the scene as Kitten was smitten and started talking about what our married life would be like. I was still young and not ready to be cornered. Nice country and friendly people though.

Quite the lovely and stimulation place, for sure.

....and still remain somewhat of a secret.
