  • Sapa, Northern Vietnam Trip

I spent three days in Sapa, Vietnam a few years ago. Sapa is located 1500 meters above sea level. The place was very memorable because it is nestled in the northern mountains of Vietnam and home to a number of hilltribes including the H'mong and the Dao tribes. I got to spend a day with both of these tribes to see how they live which made me feel like I stepped back into the 1900's before the industrial boom.

Arriving in downtown Sapa which is basically a road with a lot of guesthouses.

The view from my balcony of the guesthouse looking to the side.

Most of these guesthouses or hotels are facing this view which is usually shrouded in a sea of clouds in the morning.

I rented a motorcycle taxi and rode on the back of the bike through the mountains towards Fansipan. On the way the views were really something. Ran into some oxen along the road.

Sapa is known for its rice paddies which fall along the mountainsides.

These were the views as I rode along the winding and narrow roads.

We passed these famous falls called Silver falls. We stopped and walked up a trail next to the falls.

Quality isn't the best as I'm taking them from the back of a motorbike.

I will get to Fansipan and the hilltribes soon.

Thank you, kindly. I have many more of Sapa. Here are some of the hilltribe village that I visited. Many foreigners visit and of course are offered clothes/scarves etc. that the tribes make. I ended up being shown by three hill tribe women one of their houses that had three kitchens and a place where the pigs were fed.

I saw a man using oxen to plow the corn fields.

The whole tribal village was shrouded in mist.

            The Dao tribe

The house on the left is the one that I was shown.

              Kids look bored.

Fansipan is on the left... This is Tram Ton Pass the highest mountain pass in Vietnam at 1900 feet.

Fansipan in the background the highest mountain in Vietnam.

One of the Dao tribe girls who showed me her dwellings and spoke in broken English. Beautiful with her baby on her back.
