  • Nageotte wins pole vault gold

Katie Nageotte (USA) is the only vaulter who clears the bar at 4.90m after Holly Bradshaw (GBR), defending champion Katerina Stefanidi (GRE), and world champion Anzhelika Sidorova (ROC) all fail at that height.

Sidorova had one attempt at 4.95, her world championships-winning height, but missed.

Gold to Nageotte, silver to Sidorova, bronze to Bradshaw.: https://olympics.com/tokyo-2020/en/liveblog - https://www.instagram.com/p/CSHgYF2Halt/

    • U.S. Women Take Olympic Gold In Beach Volleyball

U.S. women's beach volleyball pair Alix Klineman and April Ross have taken gold at the Tokyo Olympics, handily defeating Australia in the final match.

Klineman and Ross hugged between points as they racked up straight-set wins against Taliqua Clancy and Mariafe Artacho del Solar, 21-15, 21-16.

Historically, U.S. women have been incredibly dominant in beach volleyball at the Olympics.

Ross was previously paired with Kerri Walsh Jennings, and they took the bronze in 2016 at the Rio de Janeiro Games. Walsh Jennings won gold in 2004, 2008 and 2012 with her former partner Misty May-Treanor.

Now, Klineman and Ross have brought gold back to the U.S.: https://www.npr.org/sections/tokyo-o...man-april-ross

            • U.S. Golfer Nelly Korda Wins Olympic Gold, Completing U.S. Golden Sweep

merican Nelly Korda finished with a one-shot victory in the Olympic women's golf competition battling both the rain and her opponents in the final round. With the win, the United States swept the gold medals in golf.

Korda, 23, continued her sparkling season after winning her first major, the Women's PGA Championship in June, as well as two other tournaments, and then snagging the world number one ranking. Now she can add an Olympic gold medal to her collection of firsts this year.

"I've had a pretty good stretch of events, but that doesn't mean necessarily that you're going to play well," she said. "You kind of try to put the expectations to the side and just go out, have a nice fresh week, and enjoy the Olympic experience.": https://www.npr.org/sections/tokyo-o...s-golden-sweep

              • U.S. Men Win 4x400 Meter Relay And Get The Team's First Track Gold In Tokyo

After failing to win a single gold medal across all track events leading into Saturday, the U.S. men's team dominated in the 4x400 meter relay's final heat to the top spot on the podium.

Saturday's win secured a gold medal for the U.S. men's relay team — an achievement the broader track squad has made in every Olympics the U.S. team has participated in.

The team of Michael Cherry, Michael Norman, Bryce Deadmon and Rai Benjamin finished with a time of 2:55:70.

Meanwhile, the U.S. women's 4x400 meter relay team won gold on Saturday, with U.S. star Allyson Felix bringing her Olympic medal count up to 11, making her the most decorated U.S. track and field athlete in history.: https://www.npr.org/sections/tokyo-o...-gold-in-tokyo

                  • Tokyo Games close with a flourish

Tokyo — More than a year after they were set to begin, and 17 days after their delayed start, the Tokyo Olympics drew to an end on Sunday with the closing ceremony here at Olympic Stadium.

Why it matters: Although COVID-19 delayed the Games and left an indelible mark, organizers hope the Games have left a legacy beyond the disease.

Sunday's ceremony began with the raising of the Japanese flag and a flag parade featuring a single flag bearer from each country, followed by the entrance of some additional athletes.
                    • As with the opening ceremony and nearly all the events (with the exception of a few held outside Tokyo), there were no fans, with the stadium audience consisting only of athletes, officials, journalists, photographers and volunteers.

The big picture: The U.S. captured the most gold medals at the Tokyo Games, topping China on the final day thanks to victories in women's volleyball and basketball.
