    • Rob Manfred warns 2020 MLB season could shut down without improvement in COVID-19 containment

Major League Baseball commissioner Rob Manfred told union head Tony Clark on Friday that the league could be forced to shut down the season due to COVID-19 if infections continue to rise over the coming days, according to ESPN's Jeff Passan. The belief is that this weekend will go a long way in determining the viability of the 60-game season, Passan noted, with local health officials being "troubled by the lack of mask wearing, high-fiving and spitting by players."

Passan notes that players who were briefed on the call between Manfred and Clark believe the season could be halted as soon as Monday.

Although the regular season is just over a week old, already MLB has experienced a full-blown outbreak with the Miami Marlins. Six teams have had their originally scheduled games for Friday postponed due to COVID-19-related complications. That's a full 20 percent of the league. Fifteen total games have been postponed since Monday, including Friday's Cardinals-Brewers series opener after two St. Louis players tested positive.

The league released its latest COVID-19 testing information shortly after Passan's report broke. The league said it had 29 new positive tests in the last week, and 21 of them came from one team (the Marlins).

The incubation period of the virus means that more positive tests could be forthcoming regardless of players' behavior over the next few days. Generally, it takes between two and 14 days for COVID-19 to manifest, with the median falling around five days. As such, a positive test on Saturday or Sunday might have been the result of being infected midway through the week.

MLB has reacted to the Marlins' outbreak and other positive tests by ramping up its prevention approach, including installing compliance officers. While the league should be applauded in the sense that it has approached the virus in a flexible way, it's at least equally concerning (if not more so) that such provisions were not in place before the season got underway.

As such, it should be noted that placing the blame on the players (and the players alone) is an oversimplification of the situation. The league, for instance, could have taken a more proactive approach in many regards, be it testing, education, and even how it handles rain delays and weather-related postponements.

Chicago Cubs first baseman Anthony Rizzo voiced his frustration with MLB's protocols on Wednesday night, while the team waited for its game against the Cincinnati Reds to be officially postponed. Rizzo had a point. Based on what is known about how COVID-19 transmits, the highest risk situations entail prolonged exposure in intimate settings amid large crowds in enclosed or poorly ventilated rooms or areas. Or, essentially, clubhouses.

MLB also erred in allowing the Marlins to make their own decision to play against the Philadelphia Phillies on Sunday, even as four players were known to have tested positive. While the chances of a team-to-team transmission during a game seem remote, the league should have been involved in that decision-making process.: https://www.cbssports.com/mlb/news/r...nt-per-report/

MLB tells broadcast partners to prepare for potential 2020 season shutdown, per report

Major League Baseball's commissioner Rob Manfred told MLB Players Association head Tony Clark on Friday that the season could be scrapped if the league's COVID-19 numbers continue to get worse, according to ESPN's Jeff Passan. Per Passan, some players briefed on the call believe Manfred could pull the plug as soon as Monday, depending on the extent of the weekend's testing.

Those individuals aren't the only ones hearing about that possibility, either. Keith Olbermann, also of ESPN, reported Friday night that "Networks broadcasting MLB games have been alerted to look at possible alternate programming after this weekend should the league shut down."

It's unclear what Manfred's threshold is for keeping the season going. The St. Louis Cardinals had at least four more individuals test positive on Saturday morning, but early reports suggest that most of those are not players but rather staff members. Still, the Cardinals situation would seem to have the same kind of outbreak potential that consumed the Miami Marlins all week.

Manfred's declaration that protocols need to be more closely followed over the weekend rings somewhat hollow due to the lagging nature of positive tests. COVID-19's incubation period can run anywhere from two to 14 days, with five days serving as the median, according to the CDC. Infections that trigger positive tests on Saturday or Sunday were likely contracted early in the week, or even before that in some cases. In other words, improved behavior would not be detectable, at least through the metric of positive tests, until late next week.

Dr. Zachary Binney, an epidemiologist and assistant professor at Oxford College of Emory University, summed up MLB's chances of salvaging the season on Saturday by tweeting "MLB should shut it down unless they honestly think they can make major changes to their protocol to alter that. Which would be an indictment of their plan to begin with but is the best-case scenario now."

MLB did make some alterations to its protocol earlier in the week by requiring teams to hire compliance officers, among other tweaks. It might prove to be too little too late.: https://www.cbssports.com/mlb/news/m...wn-per-report/

            Just for fun.

In the bottom of the fifth, Ketel Marte hit a little flare to shallow left that was caught by Raimel Tapia, causing Calhoun to retreat back to first base. Tapia’s throw to first ate up Daniel Murphy, and Calhoun broke for second. But catcher Tony Wolters was backing up first, so Calhoun found himself in an old-fashioned pickle.

Calhoun was dead in the water and had only one thing at his disposal to save himself—his noggin. When Wolters threw down to second, Calhoun deflected the ball by headbutting it. First base umpire Rob Drake called Calhoun out for intentionally interfering with the ball. Arizona manager Torey Lovullo didn’t see it that way and was ejected after coming out to argue with Drake.: https://www.si.com/extra-mustard/202...headbutt-video

Major League Baseball's 2020 postseason is on to the divisional round after the Wild Card Series wrapped up Friday. Eight teams are remaining in the playoff bracket, and every game the rest of October will be played at a neutral site. The Yankees will face the top-seeded Rays, while the Astros square off with the Athletics in the American League. In the National League, the upstart Padres will take on the division rival Dodgers, and the Braves go up against the Marlins.

These playoffs are unlike any other in the sport's history. The expanded postseason originally featured 16 teams. MLB will now hold the final three rounds of the 16-team 2020 postseason -- the Division Series, League Championship Series and World Series -- at neutral-site locations.
