Can do taxis food to most conversation, getting a date, directions, hotels only in banks and complicated places do I fall flat, can get myself in the door but don't know how to talk about documents, finances, taxes etc etcLast edited by Arthur Daley; 12-09-2019, 02:50 PM.

Same. I did learn to speak, read and right Russian as a bet with a friend.
Although my Thai is basic, I think my wife's cousin understood when I yelled down the phone he's an effin' shyte builder and KG student using Lego would have done a better job on the house extension. He knows enough English so all was clear!

Reaching a functional level in the language to include casual conversation in the present, past and future and a vocabulary of, say, 500-1,000 frequently used words and phrases. On the (US) Foreign Service Institute scale of 0-5, I reached a 2 in Amharic. I wasn't tested in the other languages, but self-assessed based on my experience with the FSI model.
