      • Tak cluster sparks frantic bed scramble

Four more field hospitals are being built in Tak as the two existing facilities are full after a cluster of more than 600 infections was discovered at a local factory.

Several infections were detected at a clothing factory in Mae Tao Klang village of Mae Sot district. It prompted local health authorities to conduct mass testing on 1,000 workers at the plant in tambon Mae Tao from June 25.

Of them, 606 tested positive for Covid-19, most of whom were migrant workers.

It meant two existing field hospitals in the tambon were swamped with people requiring treatment.

Provincial authorities were now in a race against time to build four additional field hospitals to meet the demand for beds.

Some of the sick were taken on military trucks to a field hospital outside the district for treatment.

In the meantime, checkpoints have been set up along roads to regulate movement going in and out of tambon Mae Tao.

Tak governor Pongrat Piromrat has also signed an order stepping up control measures to prevent the further spread of Covid-19 in the tambon.

They include a ban on parties and other leisure and entertainment gatherings. Funerals, weddings and cultural ceremonies can take place although participants must not exceed more than 50 people.

Restaurants and other eateries can open as usual although no alcohol is to be served.

It was also reported that personal protection equipment (PPE), such as n95 filtration face masks, rubber gloves and alcohol sprays were in short supply.

Meanwhile, in Chon Buri, four more Covid-19 deaths and another 146 infections were confirmed on Tuesday with 36 new cases linked to a cluster at Sattahip morning market.

The provincial communicable disease control committee on Tuesday said the new infections brought the provincial total to 8,218, of which 5,384 have recovered, with 60 discharged over the past 24 hours.

The four deaths raised cumulative fatalities in Chon Buri to 46, the provincial public health office said on its Facebook page on Tuesday.

Of the new infections, the 36 found at the Sattahip market were detected during mass testing, while the other discoveries included 16 at Marunix (Thailand) Co, an electrical wire company in Rayong, who took Covid-19 tests in Chon Buri; and two were found at Talad Mai market in Muang district, adding to an existing cluster there.: https://www.bangkokpost.com/thailand...c-bed-scramble

          • Cabinet backs debt relief extension

The cabinet on Tuesday approved seven state-owned financial institutions extending debt relief measures for their customers for another six months to help ease the impact of Covid-19, says Finance Minister Arkhom Termpittayapaisith.

He said the existing measures are set to expire in June or July.

These institutions have provided relief measures to 7.56 million individuals and small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), totalling 3.46 trillion baht in loans since February 2020. The measures range from the suspension of principal and interest payments to the extension of the debt repayment period.

There are 3 million customers still in the debt relief process, representing outstanding loans of 1.2 trillion baht.

The cabinet also endorsed additional loan measures for SMEs, including increasing the Government Savings Bank's (GSB) soft loan tenor to a maximum of seven years from the original five years, and extending the grace period for the principal for these soft loans to two years from one year.

Mr Arkhom said these financial institutions have combined loans of more than 104 billion baht in the debt relief process for individuals and SMEs.

Vitai Ratanakorn, president and chief executive of GSB, said the bank has launched more than 20 relief measures so far, worth over 200 billion baht. One measure is loans for individual customers with a range of 10,000 to 50,000 baht per person.

Tanaratt Ngamvalairatt, president of the Bank for Agriculture and Agricultural Cooperatives, said BAAC has provided relief measures to more than 3 million customers.

The bank plans to launch two new loans worth 90 billion baht on Wednesday to help customers with the economic impact of Covid-19. One provides up to 100,000 baht per person, totalling 30 billion baht. The other is a loan of 60 billion baht for farmers to use technology to add value to their products, charging an annual interest rate of 4%.

Nartnaree Rathapat, acting president of Small and Medium Enterprise Development Bank of Thailand, said the bank allocated 75 billion baht to improve SME liquidity.: https://www.bangkokpost.com/business...lief-extension

            • Night-time curfew imposed in Thailand’s Songkhla province until July 29

A night-time curfew has been imposed in Thailand’s southern province of Songkhla, from yesterday (Wednesday) until July 29th, amid ongoing daily new infections of between 133 and 272 over the past week.

People in the province may not leave their accommodation between 10pm and 4am each night, while social gatherings are discouraged, to get the spread of the coronavirus under control, said Songkhla Governor Charuwat Kliangklao today.

Exceptions are being made for movement at night related to medical treatment, rescue, the transport of essential goods and medical equipment, banks’ cash, postal services, commutes of officials on duty, those commuting from the airport or on public transport and others with unavoidable reasons for being be out.

Over the past months, people in the province have been cooperating fully with local officials in COVID-19 measures, but the curfew is needed, Mr. Charuwat added.

Songkhla ranks ninth on the list of provinces with most infections in the current wave of COVID-19, with 4,717 cases since April 1st.: https://www.thaipbsworld.com/night-t...til-july-29th/

              • Toddler sparks Covid cluster in Khon Kaen nursery

A community centre for children in Khon Kaen’s Srisuk subdistrict became a new cluster for Covid-19 on Thursday after 42 people, including 34 youngsters, tested positive.

The cluster was sparked by a two-year-old who had been infected by her mother.

The youngster’s mum works in Chonburi and had come over for a week. She also infected her parents, who live in the same house.

So far, 10 children and two teachers have been transferred to Srinagarind Hospital for treatment, while another 24 children and six teachers have been sent to Khon Kaen Hospital.

Meanwhile, provincial disease investigation officials say the Covid-19 virus detected in these patients appears to be a new variant.

“We have tested 300 people who have been in contact with these patients and have urged people travelling from provinces under maximum and strict control to report to the nearest public health office,” an official said.: https://www.nationthailand.com/in-focus/40002726

                • Bangkok workers' exodus spreading Covid to provinces

The exodus of workers from shuttered construction sites in Bangkok has led to an increase in Covid-19 infections detected in 32 provinces, mostly in the Northeast.

Apisamai Srirangson, spokeswoman for the Centre for Covid-19 Situation Administration, said on Thursday that 129 people arriving from Greater Bangkok had tested positive for the novel coronavirus this week.

By far the largest number were in the Northeast, where 84 infections were reported in 12 provinces among people arriving from the capital - in Si Sa Ket, Yasothon, Ubon Ratchathani, Maha Sarakham, Khon Kaen, Roi Et, Kalasin, Chaiyaphum, Nakhon Ratchasima, Surin, Buri Ram and Mukdahan.

Twenty-three cases were found in nine out of the 25 central provinces - in Ang Thong, Samut Songkhram, Suphan Buri, Prachuap Khiri Khan, Chanthaburi, Trat, Sa Kaeo, Prachin Buri and Chon Buri.

There were 20 cases in people arriving in six of the 18 northern provinces - Chiang Rai, Chiang Mai, Phayao, Nan, Phichit and Nakhon Sawan.

Two others went to Phuket, one of 14 southern provinces.

"This prompts provinces to issue strict orders for local people and officials to be on the highest alert, as workers are leaving risk areas in Greater Bangkok and the South for their home provinces," Dr Apisamai said.

The exodus follows the closure of construction workers' camps in Bangkok from Monday this week in a bid to control the Covid-19 clusters spreading through the labourers' dormitories.

Many fled the camps before the closures came into force.

"People are not prohibited from returning home, but they must act responsibly towards their relatives, who may be elderly people or young children.

"The returnees might have been in close contact with Covid-19 cases and must act as if they are infected," Dr Apisamai said.

She asked returnees to refrain from partying, from being too close to relatives or visiting crowded places in their home province. They could be carrying Covid-19, but remain asymptomatic.: https://www.bangkokpost.com/thailand...d-to-provinces

                  • All schools, kindergartens in Khon Kaen closed till July 16 amid COVID-19 spread

All schools, kindergartens and child development centres in Thailand’s northeastern province of Khon Kaen have been ordered to close until July 16th amid an ongoing surge of COVID-19 infections in the province and elsewhere.

Boarding education institutes, including those teaching children with special needs, have been sealed, with children remaining in the compounds and parental visits barred until July 16th, according to yesterday’s announcement, citing concerns over the current rapid spread of the coronavirus.

Khon Kaen ranks 34th out of the country’s 77 provinces with the most COVID-19 infections in the current wave, with 667 reported between April 1st and July 1st.

Thailand recorded another daily COVID-19 death toll high of 61 today, up from yesterday’s high of 57, while logging 6,087 new cases, 207 of whom are in prisons.

Numerous schools across Thailand have been ordered to close temporarily, soon after their reopening on June 14th, due to COVID-19 concerns following interprovincial movements during the school holidays.: https://www.thaipbsworld.com/all-sch...vid-19-spread/

COVID-19 infections in Thailand surged 6,230 cases today (Saturday), as Bangkok logged 1,971 cases, still the highest of all the provinces, according to the Centre for COVID-19 Situation Administration (CCSA).

41 more deaths were reported today, including 29 in Bangkok, 2 each in Yala and Samut Sakhon and 1 each in Kanchanaburi, Kamphaeng Phet, Chachoengsao, Nonthaburi, Nakhon Nayok, Ranong, Ang Thong and Udon Thani. The dead victims were aged from 30 to 88.

The CCSA said that the mortality rate among those infected is decreasing, but the new infection rate is rising steadily. The other nine provinces with high infection rates are:

                        • Samut Prakan 479
                        • Pathum Thani 448
                        • Chon Buri 294
                        • Samut Sakhon 277
                        • Nonthaburi 257
                        • Pattani 197

                        • Nakhon Pathom 169
                        • Yala 159

Cumulative infections in Bangkok have reached 79,017 since April 1st, 2021.

Cumulative infections nationwide, since April 1st this year, are 248,288 and the death toll is 2,088. 190,073 people have recovered. 57,470 are being treated in general and field hospitals and “hospitels”, including 2,045 severe cases, of whom 589 are on ventilators.

In the past 24 hours, two new clusters have been found in Nakhon Pathom province (at Kamphaengsaen University and at a furniture factory, with 17 new cases) and at an ice factory in Chon Buri where 56 workers were infected.

Meanwhile, the Medical Services Department said that calls from the public, to its 1669 hotline service demanding admission to hospitals have, of late, increased five-fold, which is indicative of a worsening of the COVID-19 situation and the shortage of hospital beds. New lines have been added to cope with the increasing calls for help.

The department advises COVID-19 patients to call the 1669 hotline service if they develop fatigue while talking, speak incoherently, constant tightness of the chest, fast breathing, difficulty breathing, chest pain or loss of consciousness.: https://www.thaipbsworld.com/thailan...0-on-saturday/

                          • Thailand - Existing measures 'adequate' to battle rising Covid toll

The government will not impose additional restrictions to curb the surge in Covid-19, even though the death toll and infection rate are increasing daily, the chief of the Covid operations centre said on Friday.

Existing measures are adequate for the government to handle the situation, Gen Natthapol Nakpanich said.

The Centre for Covid-19 Situation Administration was in close contact with the Public Health Ministry on how to best handle the rapid spread of the disease.

Gen Natthaphol, who runs day-to-day CCSA operations, said speeding up the rate of vaccinations and strict enforcement of the existing regulations, for both people and businesses, was needed.

"There will be no need for more restrictions because we do not want to increase the burden on the people," he said before a CCSA meeting.

The National Security Council chief admitted he was worried about the virus figures, which continue to climb throughout the country.

The daily number of fatalities has risen to a new new record high on three consecutive days, from 53 reported on Wednesday to 57 on Thursday and now 61 on Friday.

There were also 6,087 new infections reported on Friday, up from 5,533 on Thursday and 4,786 on Wednesday.

The CCSA operations commander said on Wednesday a fourth wave was possible due to the highly contagious nature of the Delta variant of the virus, which was first found in India and has now spread in Thailand.

                              • Doctors arrive in capital amid surge in cases

While the government is upbeat about its Phuket reopening scheme, health personnel in Greater Bangkok are struggling to deal with a surge of new Covid-19 infections and deaths.

Hospitals are experiencing a shortage of intensive care unit (ICU) beds and staff to take care of patients in serious condition. The Public Health Ministry has mobilised 144 newly-graduated doctors from several provinces to help take care of patients amid the shortage of medical personnel in Bangkok. A welcoming event was organised on Thursday for the doctors who specialise in internal medicine, pulmonary medicine, infectious diseases and critical care medicine.

"I would like to say sorry [for calling you to come] and thank you for your help," said Thongchai Kiratihatthayakon, deputy permanent secretary for public health, during the ceremony. "Now, Bangkok and the surrounding provinces are in a real crisis, patients are beginning to die at home.

"We do not want Thailand to be the same as Europe last year when many patients were allowed to die at home because there were no beds at hospitals," he said.

"Some of you might think why it has to be you [to be sent]," Dr Thongchai said. "It is because we really want your help, and your rectors see that you are the best. Now [the outbreak] is not manageable, that's why we want you all."

Siriraj Hospital, Ramathibodi Hospital, Vajira Hospital, Thammasat University Hospital, and the field hospital at Mongkutwattana Hospital have shortages of ICU beds for patients with severe symptoms, and they plan to increase the number of beds.

In light of this, more medical personnel are needed to look after patients, Dr Thongchai said.

"In our life, we have never experienced something like World War II but we are now in a war where all countries around the world are struggling to fight against this disease," he said.

                                "You are our strength."

He said this is the first time the Public Health Ministry has had to mobilise doctors for a special purpose.

"If we do not do this, many people will be left to die in their homes," he said. "In Thailand, this should not be so, we should not be forced to choose which patient will survive and which one will be left to die."

The graduate doctors have been vaccinated against Covid-19, and they will receive remuneration and allowances according to ministerial regulations, he said.: https://www.bangkokpost.com/thailand...surge-in-cases
