  • COVID-19 in Thailand expected to worsen next week, CCSA says

Gen. Nattaphon Narkphanich, secretary-general of the National Security Council (NSC) and director of the operations centre of the CCSA, said today (Friday) that the CCSA predicts an increase in the rate of new COVID-19 infections next week, so vaccinations must be accelerated.

“We are trying to accelerate the vaccinations. It’s not that we are doing this gradually. As soon as any batch arrives, it will be administered as soon as possible,” he said.

“As the high number of daily infections is expected to remain for a while, we would like to ask for everyone’s cooperation and to be responsible, such as by practicing social distancing and wearing masks.” he added.

Pointing out that construction worker dormitories have been sealed, Gen. Nattaphon attributed the currently rising infections to movements of other people. “Let me reiterate, we are not blaming the people for the high (infection) figures, but we are asking for cooperation,” he said.

The CCSA subcommittee chief, however, ruled out the possibility of additional restrictions in the foreseeable future, claiming that Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha is already concerned about the impacts of the existing measures.

He is optimistic that the situation is under control, even if new daily infections reach 10,000, while emphasizing that the government has increased hospital beds, in both general and field hospitals and in “hospitels”, and has introduced a home isolation program for asymptomatic cases.: https://www.thaipbsworld.com/covid-1...eek-ccsa-says/

    • Chon Buri bans liquor sales and gatherings with alcohol at night starting Saturday

In a fresh bid to contain the continuing spread of COVID-19 in Thailand’s eastern coastal province of Chon Buri, the provincial communicable disease committee issued an announcement today (Friday) forbidding the sale and distribution of liquor from 8pm until 4am, effective from Saturday and until further notice.

Gathering to drink alcohol, in a way which may contribute to the spread of COVID-19 or which may cause a nuisance to other people, is also banned during the same period.

District chief officers of every district in Chon Buri, in their capacity as chiefs of the operations centres to control the disease, have been ordered to enforce the ban.

According to the announcement, new infections have been reported in the province on continuous basis and some business activities have been blamed for the spread of the contagion.

Chon Buri logged 222 new COVID-19 cases today and is ranked No.5 province with most infections across the country in the current wave, with 8,907 cases recorded since April 1st.: https://www.thaipbsworld.com/chon-bu...ting-saturday/

      • Bangkok to set up 6 pre-admission centres for asymptomatic COVID-19 patients

The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) is setting up six pre-admission centres, with the first being at Wat Saphan in Klongtoey and the second at the health promotion centre in Petchkasem Soi 69, to accommodate asymptomatic cases and those with mild symptoms, while they are waiting for hospital beds.

Bangkok Governor Aswin Kwanmuang said today (Friday) that the centres will help ease congestion at general and field hospitals, as well as at “hospitels”, and solve the problem of many asymptomatic and mild symptomatic cases being stuck at home while they wait to be admitted to hospitals.

The main objective of the pre-admission centres, however, is to separate those tested positive for the virus from their families and communities, to reduce the spread of the disease, he said, adding that the centres, which follow the model of the one at Wat Saphan, are not much different from field hospitals, as there will be officials at the facilities to look after the patients around the clock.

The pre-admission centre at Petchkasem Soi 69 will have a 100 patient capacity. Other centres are to be established soon starting next week.

Meanwhile, the Army Development Unit of the Supreme Command has expanded the facility at Busarakham field hospital, in Impact Muang Thong Thani, by adding 1,500 beds in the Challenger 2 conference hall.: https://www.thaipbsworld.com/bangkok...d-19-patients/

        • Immunologist infected after 2 doses of Sinovac urges other brands for medics

An immunologist who contracted Covid-19 despite receiving two doses of Sinovac says medics should be vaccinated with a different brand.

On Friday, immunologist Dr Prapaporn Pisitkun explained on Facebook that she caught Covid-19 from a positive case despite having already receiving two Chinese-made Sinovac jabs.

Prapaporn said she had checked her neutralising antibodies (NAb) to monitor her immune response after vaccination.

Two weeks after her second dose, her NAb was high at 92.9 per cent. However, after two months her NAb dropped to 65.7 per cent.

She said that although her antibody level was not low, it was not high enough to protect her from the Delta variant.

Prapaporn noted there are two ways to generate herd immunity among people. One is vaccination and the other is allowing the virus to infect them so they build natural immunity.

If the government chooses the first option, adequate vaccine brands must be provided, or else herd immunity will be generated in the second way, said Prapaporn.

Sinovac registered just 50.4 per cent efficacy in Brazilian trials, barely reaching the 50-per-cent efficacy needed for World Health Organisation approval.

She said more doses of Covid-19 vaccine should be procured to boost the immunity of medics, and the vaccines should be mRNA brands such as Pfizer-BioNTech and Moderna.

“Sinovac vaccine can protect us from severe illness and death. If there is no better choice, the Chinese vaccine is okay. However, people jabbed with Sinovac can still be infected and spread Covid-19 to others, which means the outbreak will not end and everyone will contract the virus,” she said.: https://www.nationthailand.com/in-focus/40002766

          • 70 per cent of Covid patients in Thailand infected with Delta variant

An estimated 70 per cent of Covid-19 patients in Bangkok are infected with the Delta variant, virologist Dr Yong Poovorawan said on his Facebook page on Saturday morning.

His post was based on a study in June of over 700 samples. The virologist added that the Delta variant spread easily, and it is hard to trace the origin.: https://www.nationthailand.com/in-focus/40002795

            • Outcry over vaccine shortages

The government has come under fire over its failure to procure sufficient Covid-19 vaccines as the number of new cases continued to soar, with more than 6,000 cases and 61 fatalities confirmed on Friday.

The Centre for Covid-19 Situation Administration (CCSA) said that the number of new cases is expected to rise further next week.

Boon Vanasin, chairman of the Thonburi Healthcare Group, on Friday said the government's purchase of Moderna and Pfizer vaccines was slow because it did not sign contracts with manufacturers.

During a Channel 3 interview, Dr Boon said he wondered why other Asean countries, such as the Philippines, Indonesia, Malaysia and Singapore, had already procured these types of vaccines, but Thailand did not have a single dose.

Dr Boon said he contacted people he knew at both Moderna and Pfizer who told him that Thailand did not have contracts signed to purchase the vaccines.

"I want the government to explain why the purchase of mRNA vaccines was slow. We don't have the vaccines even though the mRNA vaccines from Moderna and Pfizer are the most effective with few side effects," Dr Boon added.

He said that the Thonburi Hospital was ready to buy 50 million vaccine doses from the two producers in October last year, but they would not sell Covid-19 vaccines directly to private companies.

Dr Boon said that the government was waiting for vaccines from only one manufacturer, AstraZeneca, and now the rising demand for the vaccines has far outstripped the company's production.: https://www.bangkokpost.com/thailand...cine-shortages

              • Provinces welcome back infected residents to control virus spread

At least six provinces are welcoming back Covid-positive residents working in Greater Bangkok and other places with open arms in an attempt to keep new infections at bay.

Lampang, Nakhon Ratchasima, Khon Kaen, Chaiyaphum, Phitsanulok and Nakhon Si Thammarat have separately introduced a "no-one-left-behind programme" since labour camps in Greater Bangkok were ordered to shut down for one month from June 28.

Despite different launch dates, the schemes share the same goal: Covid-19 containment by discouraging infected people, including construction workers, to sneak back into their home provinces, thereby exacerbating the risk of spreaking the coronavirus around the country.

While residents can return for treatment in their home provinces, there are conditions -- including not using public transport, as that could spread the virus to other passengers.

"It is better for us to let them back in openly in so we can isolate them from other people," Lampang governor Narongsak Osottanakorn said on Thursday.

The idea took shape after Bangkok hospitals reported a shortage of beds and camp closures in Bangkok and five surrounding provinces forced workers to rush back to their home provinces before enforcement began last Monday. Some workers have slipped back home since then. : https://www.bangkokpost.com/thailand...l-virus-spread

                • Korat logs record 77 new Covid infections

NAKHON RATCHASIMA: This northeastern province on Sunday registered a record number of 77 new Covid-19 infections in one day -- the highest since the beginning of the outbreak, according to the provincial communicable disease committee.

Of them, 16 were reportedly found in Muang district; 13 in Pak Chong; seven in Non Sung; seven in Bua Yai; six in Chok Chai; six in Si Khiu; five in Pathai; three in Non Thai; two each in Khong, Khon Buri, Dan Khun Thot and Phra Thong Kham; and one each in Kham Thale So, Kham Sakae Saeng, Chalerm Phra Kiat, Chum Phuang, Pak Thong Chai, and Phimai districts.

Of the 77 new infections, 33 contracted the virus locally, 23 had returned home from Bangkok, 10 from Samut Prakan, three from Pathum Thani, two from Nonthaburi, and one each from Nakhon Pathom, Trat, Rayong and Saraburi. Two were under investigation.

The accumulated number of Covid parients in the province reached 1,435. Of the total, 999 have recovered, 418 are still under treatment and 17 died.

Dr Jessada Boonyawongwiroj, assistant director of Maharat Nakhon Ratchasima Hospital, said hospital beds for Covid patients were nearly full following a surge of new infections.

In response, the provincial communicable disease committee would turn Chatichai Hall, an indoor sport arena, into a field hospital with 200 beds on July 6. The venue was previously used as a field hospital early this year.: https://www.bangkokpost.com/thailand...vid-infections

                  • Thai man with kidney disease dies a day after vaccine jab in Udon Thani

A 64-year old man, who suffered from kidney disease, died one day after he received his AstraZeneca vaccine jab and his daughter thinks that his death might be linked to the vaccination.

A joint team of police, health officials and rescue workers in Thailand’s northeastern province of Udon Thani was rushed to the house of Mr. Akkradet Thongkham on Saturday, after the police were alerted to his sudden death by his daughter, Ms. Wanthanee.

Ms. Wanthanee reportedly told the police that Akkradet had just finished his lunch on Saturday when he suddenly developed breathing difficulties and passed out, adding that she tried cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) on the victim, but to no avail.

She also told the police and health officials that her father was inoculated with the AstraZeneca vaccine on Friday and that he regularly attended dialysis sessions without any unusual symptoms.

The victim’s body has been sent to the Srinakharind Hospital in the province for an autopsy.

Health officials said that the victim’s family is entitled to claim compensation from the National Health Security Office within two years of the victim’s death.: https://www.thaipbsworld.com/thai-ma...in-udon-thani/

Today (Sunday), Bangkok’s Siriraj Piyamaharajkarun Hospital announced the temporary closure of its Emergency Room, until further notice, due to the number of patients exceeding capacity.

The hospital did not say when the ER will resume operations, but apologised to members of the public for the inconvenience.

Meanwhile, Rajavithi Hospital also announced today the suspension of general surgery services and admission of in-patients, from Monday until July 16th, after some medical personnel were found to be infected with COVID-19, resulting in several others being quarantined.

Examination rooms and general surgery services remain in operation at the hospital, but only for current patients with set appointments. No new patients, or those transferred from other hospitals, will be accepted until July 16th.

The hospital also asked for cooperation from all patients by not arriving at the hospital during this period, unless it is urgent and absolutely necessary, and by keeping track of any announcements issued by the hospital.: https://www.thaipbsworld.com/siriraj...ew-admissions/

                          • Ministry adds more beds to Nonthaburi field hospital

The Public Health Ministry will increase the capacity of Bussarakham Field Hospital to 4,000 beds in a bid to cope with a possible surge in infections from the Delta variant of Covid-19.

The hospital is in Nonthaburi’s Impact Muang Thong Thani and serves metropolitan Bangkok.

“The ministry recently added 1,500 beds, bringing the total capacity to 3,700 beds and will add another 300 beds to accommodate 4,000 patients,” Public Health Minister Anutin Charnvirakul said.

“Bussarakham Field Hospital treats patients in yellow and green categories to alleviate crowding at hospitals in Bangkok.”

Yellow-category patients are those who have moderate symptoms with underlying health issues that require close monitoring, while green-category patients are those who have tested positive but are asymptomatic or have minor symptoms.

Since its establishment on May 14, Bussarakham Field Hospital has admitted 5,064 patients, 3,055 of whom have recovered and been discharged, while 167 have been transferred to other hospitals.

The hospital has 319 free beds at present.

“Field hospitals take care of yellow- and green-category patients so other hospitals have the capacity to treat more serious patients, including those in the red-category or Covid-19 patients who require respirators,” said Anutin. “We need to add more beds to field hospitals as patients in yellow- and green-categories in Bangkok have been rising rapidly.”: https://www.nationthailand.com/in-focus/40002841

                            • CRA proposes review of hospital bed management and medics as top priority

Chulabhorn Royal Academy Secretary-General, Professor Dr. Nithi Mahanonda, has proposed a reprioritisation of Thailand’s strategies to cope with the third wave of the COVID-19 pandemic, which is rapidly spreading “far and wide” to the point that “we do not know who are infected among the people around us.”

In his Facebook post, he said that the top priority now is not to protect those who are not infected or to prevent the infected from spreading the disease, as it was when infections were not widespread, but is now about the management of hospital beds, intensive care units in particular, and of human resources to take care of patients.

He proposed the scaling down of pro-active case finding, so there will be sufficient resources to focus on people who think they may be infected, or develop mild symptoms, so they will get tested.

Those who have no symptoms and who can help themselves need not be admitted to hospitals, but should isolate at home, in order not to waste hospital beds which should be reserved for those who need them the most.

While ensuring sufficient beds in hospitals, he suggested a publicity campaign should be launched to educate the people about how to protect themselves and their families from the disease and about when to go to hospital, adding that it does not matter if the message is repetitive “as Thai people are willing to listen.”

Professor Nithi said he recommends the rapid administering of medication non severe cases, instead of allowing the virus to attack their lungs, and then give them the anti-viral medication.

He said those found infected should be treated immediately with prophylactic medications, as was the case with influenza, without having to wait for research papers about this method of treatment.

Doctors must adapt to the situation, said Professor Nithi, as he suggested they should forget that they are specialists in certain medical fields and make themselves available to take care of COVID-19 patients.

“In time of war, soldiers, whether they are infantrymen, sailors or cavalrymen, police or volunteers, must all grab a weapon to fight the enemy, or COVID-19 under the present circumstances,” he said.

About vaccines, the CRA secretary-general suggested that the people get inoculated quickly, no matter the vaccine makes, and not being too selective.

He asked the public not to worry too much about the importance of immune produced by each make of vaccine, noting that there are several more factors contributing to infection by the virus, the onset of symptoms and the protection from infection.: https://www.thaipbsworld.com/cra-pro...-top-priority/
