      • COVID-19 lockdown restrictions, zoning maintained until end of September

Thailand’s Centre for COVID-19 Situation Administration (CCSA), chaired by Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha, has decided to maintain the 9pm to 4am curfew, the Executive Decree and all existing lockdown restrictions, including working from home, in the country’s “dark red”, “red” and “yellow” zones, until the end of September.

Contrary to speculation, that further easing of restrictions would be approved as the pandemic situation is showing signs of improvement, CCSA spokesman Dr. Taweesin Visanuyothin told the media today (Friday) that the CCSA made no changes after being shown the latest forecast that daily infections may surge to about 30,000 were restrictions to be further eased.

Instead, he said the CCSA decided to tighten measures, such as such as working from home, travel controls, increased screening with antigen tests and implementation of COVID free settings, to prevent a resurgence of infections.

29 provinces remain in the “dark red” zones, 37 in “red” zones and 11 in “yellow” zones.: https://www.thaipbsworld.com/covid-1...-of-september/

          • Phuket sets up ten more community isolation facilities as COVID-19 infections spike

Ten more community isolation facilities are being set up on Thailand’s Phuket Island as COVID-19 infections surge.

The province’s Governor Narong Woonsiew said today (Saturday) that the spike in infections on the popular resort island, currently averaging more than 200 cases a day, is similar to the situation in Bangkok about two months ago and there is serious concern among local people that the hospitals will be overwhelmed.

The governor disclosed that there are about 300 infected people waiting to be admitted to hospitals and the numbers are expected to grow.

To solve the problem, he said that he has instructed local officials and community leaders to set up community isolation facilities in every sub-district, to accommodate asymptomatic cases so they are separated from their families and communities to prevent further spread of the disease.

Eight hotels in Thalang and Muang districts and two more in Krathu district are being transformed into community isolation facilities.

In the meantime, health officials have accelerated the administration of vaccine booster shots for local residents and well as migrant workers.: https://www.thaipbsworld.com/phuket-...ections-spike/

              • New infections force closure of Korat wholesale market

Talad Suranaree, a major wholesale market of agriculatural products of the Northeast, has been closed from Sept 12-15 after 79 traders tested positive for Covid-19, the provincial communicable disease committee announced on Sunday.

The new infections were found after 1,444 traders at Talad Suranaree market underwent testing for the virus on Friday and the results which came out on Saturday showed 79 were positive.

This prompted Nakhon Ratchasima mayor Prasert Boonchaisuk to issue an order to close the market for four days from 2pm on Sunday until Sept 15 for disinfection. The market is located next to Maharat Nakhon Ratchasima Hospital on Mitrapap highway in Muang district.

The provincial communicable disease committee said 170 new Covid cases were reported on Sunday. Of them, 140 were infected from within the province and 30 from elsewhere.

The province now had 11 clusters of infections under close monitoring. The biggest ones were 79 at the Talad Suranaree wholesale market in Muang district, 993 at the CPF chicken processing factory in Chok Chai district and 1,390 at the Cargill Meats factory, also in Chok Chai district.: https://www.bangkokpost.com/thailand...olesale-market

                • 24 million vaccine doses to be procured in October

The Department of Disease Control on Saturday unveiled its plan to procure and allocate 24 million doses of Covid-19 vaccine in October this year.

They will comprise 6 million doses of Sinovac, 10 million doses of AstraZeneca and 8 million doses of Pfizer, department director-general Dr Opas Karnkawinpong said.

"Separately, the Chulabhorn Royal Academy will procure approximately 6 million doses of Sinopharm vaccine in October," he added.

He explained that the 24 million doses of Covid-19 vaccines will be allocated as follows:

                  - 16.8 million will be administered to people aged 18 years and above.

                  - 4.8 million doses of Pfizer vaccine to children aged between 12-17 years

                  - 0.8 million doses to workers under the social security system.

                  - 1.1 million doses to people in agencies, such as state enterprises and prisons.

                  - 0.5 million doses to people who had already received two Sinovac jabs.

"According to the vaccination plan approved by the Cabinet, 50-70 per cent of people in all provinces would be vaccinated in October, covering the elderly, people with chronic diseases, pregnant women and other groups of people," he said.

He said the vaccination drive on children aged 12 years and above will kick off in October as preparation for the opening of a new semester.

He added that people who had already received two Sinovac jabs will receive a booster shot in October as they would be at risk of Covid-19 infection due to a decline in immunity.

"We believe that the situation will gradually improve, so we would like to ask people to follow universal prevention methods and receive their Covid-19 jab," he added.: https://www.nationthailand.com/in-focus/40006034

                    • Batch of 2m Pfizer doses to arrive on Sept 29

Public Health Minister Anutin Charnvirakul has confirmed that 2 million doses of Pfizer vaccine will arrive in Thailand on September 29.

Anutin said on Monday that a total of 30 million Pfizer doses will be delivered to the country. The first batch of 2 million will be administered to children aged 12 and above so that schools can reopen.

By the end of 2021, there will be adequate supplies to administer 900,000 Pfizer shots per day to the wider population, said Anutin.

From October, Pfizer will be given as a booster shot to people who have had two doses of Sinovac, while those double-jabbed with AstraZeneca will be given the Pfizer booster in 2022.

Anutin also said authorities were monitoring the situation to see if the quarantine period could be reduced.

“The Public Health Ministry will speed up relaxation of measures if possible,” he said, adding that people should not panic about a potential fifth wave of Covid. He also urged the public to get vaccinated as soon as possible to protect themselves and halt the spread of the disease.: https://www.nationthailand.com/in-focus/40006077

                      • Funerals biggest cause of cluster infections in many provinces

Funerals have overtaken banquets, markets, restaurants, bus stations and schools as the most common cause of Covid-19 cluster infections in many provinces.

Sit-down meals where face masks are removed had made funerals infections hotspots across the country, Centre for COVID-19 Situation Administration (CCSA) spokesperson Taweesin Visanuyothin said on Monday.

He added that banquets, markets, restaurants, bus stations, schools, and flea markets were also reporting new infections.

Thailand logged 13,637 Covid-19 fatalities between April 1 and September 9, the CCSA said.

However, the fatality rate is declining in Bangkok and surrounding provinces.

The youngest victim was 12 days old while the oldest was 109 years old. Most victims had underlying health conditions, with the top five being high blood pressure, diabetes, high cholesterol, kidney disease and obesity. Most Covid-19 fatalities occurred in hospital (13,067 or 95.82%), with 361 occurring outside hospital (2.65%), and 209 at unspecified locations (1.53%).: https://www.nationthailand.com/blogs/in-focus/40006086

                        • Thailand begins mass vaccination of pregnant women

The Ministry of Public Health will vaccinate as many as 100,000 pregnant women against COVID-19 between today (Monday September 13th) and October 13th, said Deputy Public Health Minister Sathit Pitutecha today.

He said that pregnant women are vulnerable as they are likely to develop severe symptoms, which may lead to death or cause premature birth, which will have long-term effects on the development of the babies and high medical bills.

According to a survey of COVID-19 infections among pregnant women, after 6 weeks of giving birth in the period after April 1st this year, 3,223 women were found to be infected, 73 died (2.26%) and 154 new-born babies were found to be infected (8.89%).

Meanwhile, Health Department Director-General Dr. Suwanchai Wattanayingcharoenchai said that only a small number of pregnant women have been vaccinated, mainly because they are concerned about the effectiveness or safety of the vaccines, hence the need for the campaign to urge them to get vaccinated to reduce the potential of severe illness or death from the virus.

Moreover, he said that the vaccines will help boost the immunity of their unborn babies, adding that women who are more than 12 weeks pregnant can contact their nearest hospital for the free inoculation from today onwards.

Between August 29th and September 9th, only 68,435 pregnant women had been inoculated. These include 53,697 who have received their first dose, 14,559 who have had their second and 179 who have had a third jab.: https://www.thaipbsworld.com/thailan...regnant-women/

“People who have been to the zoo from August 4-11 should stay in self-isolation from other family members for 14 days,” he added. “Should you have symptoms like fever, difficulty in breathing or fatigue, please go to a nearby hospital to receive testing immediately.”

Two new Covid-19 clusters were found in Bua Ya district, at a noodle soup shop and a Tesco Lotus store, with 14 people in total testing positive.

The provincial communicable disease control panel said on Tuesday that infections were found at Wain noodle soup shop and the Tesco Lotus branch in Bua Yai. Investigators had yet to learn the source of the infections.

The noodle shop owner had developed a fever and a cough and later tested positive on Sept 10. Investigators began tracking down people who were at risk.

A female employee at the Tesco Lotus store who ate at Wain noodles later suffered from muscle pain and a headache and she tested positive on Sept 19.

Checks found more people linked to both stores were also infected. At the noodle shop, there were a total of nine people, members of the owner's family and employees. The boyfriend of an infected employee at the shop was also infected.

At the Tesco Lotus store, three employees were infected. The disease later spread to an infected employee's husband.

In total, 14 people from the noodle shop and the Tesco Lotus store have been confirmed infected, the announcement said.

District authorities closed both premises and continue tracking down people deemed at risk.

                              • Thailand’s education ministry to inoculate 4.5 million students with Pfizer starting October

Education minister Treenuch Thienthong has revealed a plan to start inoculation of students in all 29 of Thailand’s COVID-19 “dark red” provinces in October, so that the second semester of the academic year can commence without online learning.

Students who are eligible for two shots of the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine are those aged from 12 to 18 on the day of the inoculation at all schools.

The goal is to give at least one shot of vaccine to all eligible students. The minister noted, however, that the inoculation is on a voluntary basis.

Over 70% of school staff have already been vaccinated. The rest will get their shots after more vaccines are allocated, starting next month, said the minister.

Over 15,000 schools are located in the 29 COVID-19 “dark red” provinces. The Ministry of Education is considering the readiness of the schools to start the next semester.

The progress of the “Sandbox Safety Zone in School” (SSS) project, aimed at helping boarding students to return to schools, was also revealed during Monday’s press conference.
