      • Over 4,000 Thai medics infected with COVID-19 during pandemic

As many as 4,270 Thai medics across the country have contracted COVID-19 since the pandemic began in mid-February 2020, according to the Department of Disease Control (DDC) today (Wednesday).

Among them are 198 are doctors and 34 medical students and the rest are nurses, assistant nurses, dentists, public health academics, health volunteers, housekeepers, laboratory technicians and administrators.

“The number of infected doctors is considered high. These are anaesthetists, nephrologists, general physicians, cardiologists, gynaecologists and emergency physicians,” Dr. Sumanee Wacharasint of the DDC told the Centre for COVID-19 Situation Administration (CCSA).

Meanwhile, 13 provinces are being monitored by the CCSA, in terms of COVID-19 spread, amid a spike in infections. These are Songkhla, Trang, Surat Thani, Krabi, Nakhon Si Thammarat, Khon Kaen, Sa Kaeo, Nakhon Ratchasima, Saraburi, Ubon Ratchathani, Udon Thani, Kanchanaburi and Prachuap Khiri Phan. Infections in these provinces accounted for 32% of new cases across the country.

Thailand on Wednesday logged 5,857 COVID cases and 55 deaths, a significant drop from previous months. Almost 90 million vaccine doses have been administered, of which nearly 40 million people have received two shots.: https://www.thaipbsworld.com/over-40...ring-pandemic/

        • Thai health officials told to discover why many still refuse to get vaccinated

The Ministry of Public Health has instructed health officials across Thailand to find out why there are still so many people refusing to get vaccinated against COVID-19, so appropriate campaign strategies and incentives can be developed to encourage them to get inoculated, said Permanent Secretary Dr. Kiattibhoom Vongrachit.

The Public Health Ministry has set a target to have administered 100 million doses of vaccines by the end of this month, but there are still about 10 million people who are yet to get their first dose.

The ministry has launched a vaccination campaign by providing free vaccinations from November 27th to December 5th to members of the public, including foreign migrant workers and especially elderly people and bed-ridden patients.

The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration is also offering free vaccinations in Din Daeng.

To prepare for the reopening of all Thailand’s provinces to travellers, Dr. Kiattibhoom said that that the ministry has adopted the “VUCA” strategy, which focuses on Vaccination, Universal prevention, COVID free settings and Antigen test kits.

Regarding COVID-19 pandemic, he said that new infections have stabilised and deaths and severe cases are declining. There are, however, 13 provinces still under close watch.

Those 13 provinces are grouped into three categories:
          1. Five provinces which each log over 100 new infections per day and over 5% positive results from antigen tests. These include Songkhla, Surat Thani, Trang, Krabi and Nakhon Si Thammarat.
          2. Three provinces which each log over 100 new infections per day and less than 5% positive results from antigen tests. They are Khon Kaen, Sa Kaeo and Nakhon Ratchasima.
          3. Five provinces which have 50-100 daily new infections. They are Saraburi, Ubon Ratchathani, Udon Thani, Kanchanaburi and Prachuap Khiri Khan.

Dr. Kiattibhoom said that officials are now keeping a close watch on whether infections will surge and by how much in the aftermath of the Loy Krathong festival, during which more people travelled and foreign arrivals increased.: https://www.thaipbsworld.com/thai-he...et-vaccinated/

          • No plans to force people to take Covid-19 jabs yet: Public Health Ministry

The Public Health Ministry said on Monday that it will not take legal steps to force people to get vaccinated because the situation is still under control. However, it will consider enforcing strict regulations if there is another outbreak.

Meanwhile, the ministry’s permanent secretary said he is confident Thailand will reach the 100-million-jabs goal by December 5.

Permanent secretary Dr Kiattibhoom Vongrachit said that though the authorities are speeding up the administration of jabs to reach the target by yearend, more than 2 million vaccination records have disappeared in the system due to incomplete data.

He added that according to data available, some 10 million people have not been vaccinated yet, though this information is being verified. He said the ministry is also looking for ways to administer jabs to the unvaccinated.

As for the 8,000 or so vaccine naysayers, the ministry found that more than 60 per cent changed their minds after being provided with information about the benefits of getting a jab, though over 30 per cent still refused.

“The ministry is still not planning to impose the Communicable Diseases Act to force people to get vaccinated, as there should not be any problems once the country achieves herd immunity. If there is a new outbreak, the ministry may consider using stricter measures such as prohibiting unvaccinated people from participating in activities that may pose a risk of spreading the virus,” he said.

“Though the rate of vaccines administered may have slowed down, officials are doing their best to achieve the goal of administrating 100 million vaccine doses by December 5,” Dr Kiattibhoom concluded.: https://www.nationthailand.com/in-focus/40009153

                • Thai cabinet approves plan to purchase 30 million more doses of Pfizer vaccine

The Thai cabinet today (Tuesday) approved the procurement of an additional 30 million doses of Pfizer’s mRNA COVID-19 vaccine, from Pfizer, by Thailand’s Diseases Control Department.

Government spokesman Thanakorn Wangboonkongchana said that the cabinet also authorised the Disease Control Department to sign the third amendment to the Manufacturing and Supply Agreement with Pfizer for vaccine procurement.

He said that the agreement will enable the Disease Control Department to receive the new generation of Pfizer vaccine for children, adding that the 30 million doses of mRNA vaccine are to be delivered to Thailand in lots during the first, second and third quarters of next year.

With the additional doses, Thailand will have procured a total of 60 million doses of Pfizer vaccine, said Thanakorn.

At Government House today, Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha formally received one million doses of the Moderna mRNA vaccine, donated by the United States, which arrived in Thailand yesterday.

US Chargé d’affaires, Michael Heath, celebrated the arrival of the vaccine with the prime minister, Public Health Minister Anutin Charnvirakul and other senior Thai officials at Government House.

On Monday, Heath said the new shipment reaffirms US support of Thailand and determination to stand shoulder-to-shoulder to overcome the global pandemic.

The million doses of Moderna vaccine is the second batch of mRNA vaccine, after 1.5 million Pfizer doses were delivered in July.

Heath added that the US government has provided tens of million dollars in COVID-19 related assistance to Thailand since the outbreak of the pandemic.: https://www.thaipbsworld.com/thai-ca...fizer-vaccine/

                      • Covid will stay with us, expert virologist says, advising everyone to get vaccinated

Covid-19 will continue to stay with us and we will have to live with it, expert virologist Dr Yong Poovorawan wrote on his Facebook page on Wednesday.

He said we could not get rid of SARS in 2003 and it became a global pandemic. After that, we tried to create herd immunity to stop it from spreading.

To achieve herd immunity, at least 60 to 70 per cent of the population must be vaccinated.

Yong said the Delta variant spread quickly, causing a new wave.

We knew a vaccine could reduce disease severity, deaths, and patients in hospital. However, it cannot completely eradicate a pandemic so herd immunity in this case cannot entirely prevent the disease from spreading, he wrote.

With influenza, the vaccine also could not prevent infections but it could prevent deaths.: https://www.nationthailand.com/in-focus/40009194

                        • Man dies after Moderna jab following Sinovac

A man died at his home in Muang district late on Tuesday night shortly after receiving a second dose of Covid-19 vaccine, Moderna, following an initial dose of Sinovac in September.

Police were called to house 66/189 at Moo 5, tambon Bang Muang in Muang district about 12.30am, Pol Capt Adithes Phocharoen, a duty investigator, said on Wednesday.

They found Sithipol Bovornkittipaisal, 26, lying dead on the ground floor of the house. There was no sign of physical assault.

Sithipol's mother Sopa Khotpakdi, 50, said her son had recieved the first dose of Sinovac vaccine in early September, but did not say where.

He had also placed an order for Moderna vaccine with Synphaet Theparak Hospital. He went to the hospital on Tuesday afternoon and was inoculated with the Moderna vaccine.

He returned home with no sign of side effects, she said.

However, late on Tuesday night, while playing on his phone on the second floor of the house, Sithipol began experiencing chest pain and breathing difficulties.

Ms Sopa said she called for an emergency team from Paolo Hospital Samutprakarn. While waiting, relatives carried Sithipol, who was by then unconscious, down to the ground floor.

When the medical team arrived they imediately gave him CPR and used a defibrillator on him, but could not revive him. Sithipol was already dead.

Sithipol's body was taken to Ramathibodi Chakri Naruebodindra Hospital for an autopsy to establish whether his death was related to the Covid-19 vaccination.: https://www.bangkokpost.com/thailand...lowing-sinovac

                            • More COVID infections found in Bangkok after woman drops dead in alley

Health officials and a mobile COVID-19 testing unit were dispatched to Phahonyothin Soi 54/1, in Bangkok’s Sai Mai, district to test people in the community, after a 30-year-old woman collapsed and died in the middle of a lane on Tuesday. The woman tested positive for the virus at the post-mortem examination.

Health officials urged unvaccinated residents in the neighbourhood to receive free inoculations at Wat Koh Or-ngern today.

The victim’s house, a nearby grocery shop and several other houses were also disinfected today.

Test results of the victim’s four family members show her mother and elder sister are infected, while her father and a seven-year-old child are clear of the virus.

14 of 22 neighbours were tested this morning, with 5, including the grocer, tested positive.

Health officials said that four of the infected are fully inoculated with two AstraZeneca vaccine doses and the fifth has received two Sinopharm doses and third AstraZeneca booster jab.

They also said that the deceased was unvaccinated, while four others in the same family have each received two shots of unspecified vaccines.: https://www.thaipbsworld.com/more-co...dead-in-alley/
