        • Omicron may become dominant variant with its high transmissibility – Dr. Yong Poovorawan

The new coronavirus variant, known as Omicron, is likely to replace the Delta variant as the dominant strain if it continues to spread quickly and easily, said Dr. Yong Poovorawan, chief of the Centre of Excellence in Clinical Virology at Chulalongkorn University today (Wednesday).

In his Facebook post, Thailand’s leading virologist said there is evidence of high transmissibility of the Omicron variant, citing epidemiological evidence from South Africa’s Gauteng province, which shows a rapid spread of the variant over two weeks and its emergence in more than 20 other countries.

Omicron has developed more mutations in the spike protein than the Delta variant and is capable of spreading at least as fast, he said, adding that a greater viral load has been found in the throats of infected patients, although the symptoms are mild.

Meanwhile, the Medical Sciences Department has lowered the fee for RT-PCR tests, from 1,300 to 1,100 baht per test, since November 19th, said Dr Supakit Sirilak, the department chief, today.

The new fee is applied only at state-run labs only such as the Research Institute for Health Science.

Dr. Supakit said that the RT-PCR tests are the standard adopted by World Health Organization and several other countries. Results are available in 2-3 hours and are accurate.: https://www.thaipbsworld.com/omicron...ng-poovorawan/

            • Medical Sciences Department cuts RT-PCR test fee by THB200

The Department of Medical Sciences has reduced the fee for real-time polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) tests from THB1,300 to THB1,100 to promote accurate testing of the Covid-19 virus amid concerns that the new Omicron variant, which was discovered in South Africa last week, is spreading globally.

“The new rate is applicable for testing at laboratories under the Department of Medical Sciences only,” said director-general Dr Supphakit Siriluck on Wednesday. “They are located at the Thai National Institute of Health, the Genomics Medicine Centre, and the Medical Sciences Centre. The price of the RT-PCR test kits, however, will remain the same,” he said.

“RT-PCR is the method recommended by the World Health Organisation as it can accurately detect the new coronavirus in patients within only a few hours,” Supphakit pointed out.

He said that as of Wednesday there was still no report of the B.1.1.529 variant of Covid-19, or Omicron, infecting anyone in Thailand.

“The department has been monitoring the spreading Omicron variant globally via various sources, including the GISAid network. We will notify the public immediately if any Omicron case is detected in the country,” he promised.

Earlier this week, the Public Health Ministry said it was considering keeping RT-PCR tests mandatory for foreign arrivals to prevent the spread of the new variant. The ministry initially planned to let foreign visitors use ATK (antigen test kit), which is cheaper, now that Thailand is reopening more provinces.: https://www.nationthailand.com/in-focus/40009492

              • Phuket quarantines 130 tourists from countries deemed Omicron risks

Phuket’s health authorities ordered 130 tourists who entered the province from November 15-27 to go into quarantine for 14 days to prevent the Covid-19 Omicron variant from spreading, the Phuket Information Centre announced on Wednesday.

According to the centre, 126 of these tourists are from South Africa, while four hail from Namibia.

After the 130 complete their quarantine, they must undergo RT-PCR testing to confirm they are completely free of Covid-19.

On Saturday, the Public Health Ministry announced that from December 1 Thailand would ban visitors by air from eight African countries to prevent the new, more easily transmissible Covid-19 variant from spreading after it was reported on November 24 in South Africa. The other seven countries are Botswana, Eswatini, Lesotho, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia and Zimbabwe.

The centre also reported that from November 1-27, precisely 32,360 foreign passengers landed at Phuket International Airport.

Among these, 16,446 were in the Test & Go group, which saw 23 test positive for Covid-19, or 0.14 per cent.

Some 15,914 people entered under the Phuket Sandbox programme, 39 of whom tested positive, or 0.25 per cent.

Of the 62 infected visitors, none of them hailed from the eight African countries.: https://www.nationthailand.com/in-focus/40009522

                  • Covid is set to cost the tourism industry $1.6 trillion this year. Omicron could make it worse.

The return of stricter covid restrictions to fight the latest variant, omicron, has already left some travelers stranded. For many tourism businesses, its also threatening hopes of an upcoming holiday boost this year - especially after last years shutdowns emptied out popular destinations from the Colosseum in Rome to the resort island of Bali.

"There was a kind of sunrise on the horizon" earlier this year, said Tobias Warnecke, the German hotel association's economic adviser. Now, thanks to infections and rule changes roaring back, and fears over omicron, "we have a lot of cancellations, and we're on our way down."

With scientists rushing to better understand the variant and its high number of mutations, governments including in the United States have started tightening masking, quarantine or travel rules. Many have closed their borders to the southern region of Africa where scientists first detected the variant, though it has since popped up in more than a dozen countries, from Canada to Japan.

The timing also has the aviation industry worried. The president of Emirates airline has noted that a hit to the peak travel season in December could cause "significant traumas in the business," which had been seeing a recovery.

The pandemic was already projected to cost the world's tourism sector a loss of $1.6 trillion in 2021, the U.N. tourism body said, an estimate it made shortly before the discovery of the omicron variant, which the World Health Organization warns poses a "very high" global risk.

Revenue from global tourism and arrivals rebounded this year to some extent from 2020, while remaining below 2019 levels before the pandemic battered the sector, the United Nations World Tourism Organization said in a report published this week. Last year, the direct economic loss in tourism was about $2.0 trillion.

"Uneven vaccination rates around the world and new Covid-19 strains could impact the already slow and fragile recovery," the U.N. body also warned.

Weeks before the spread of omicron, a wave of coronavirus infections had already prompted closures and curfews in much of Europe. Warnecke, from the German hotel association, described the new variant as "another bad news," although he added it was too early to predict its full impact on hotels before it is clear how it interacts with existing vaccines.

For Golden Tours, a London tour operator that takes visitors to the Warner Bros. Studio Tour - where fans can see the sets from the Harry Potter films - trips are still going ahead but cancellations have started streaming in, according to office supervisor Frank Jacobs.

Britain's high vaccination rates and the lifting of restrictions - including a mask mandate that has just come back - led to a rise in bookings since the summer and an expectation of booming business for the Christmas holidays, he added. "We had December completely booked up," he said. "But now since last week, everything is changing."

Berlin also saw "massive cancellations" in the last two weeks, according to Thomas Lengfelder, head of the city's hotel and restaurant association. Employees were "once again very unsettled" about the possibility of a new lockdown cutting back work, he said, and called for the ramping up of vaccinations.

Still, some businesses remain optimistic about their Christmas prospects.

For Le Meurice hotel in Paris, as well as others the Dorchester Collection oversees in Rome, London and Los Angeles, omicron has yet to hit holiday bookings beyond a "slight" uptick in cancellations. "So far, despite news of the new variant, the end of this year is still looking positive for us," the hotel operator said in an email. • Chiang Mai offers cocktail vaccine of choice until December 5

Chiang Mai Public Health Office has offered cocktail vaccine of choice to those who have yet to receive any Covid-19 jabs from now until December 5, Dr Songyos Khamchai, chief of disease control at the office said on Thursday.

“Recipients can choose to receive one of the following vaccine cocktails for first and second jabs: Pfizer + Pfizer, AstraZeneca + Pfizer, and Sinovac + AstraZeneca,” he said. “Those who choose the first cocktail must be 12 years old and over, while the two others require candidates who are 18 years old and over.”

People who are interested in second and third cocktails can walk-in and get a jab at all district vaccination units. Residents of Muang district can also get a jab at Central Plaza Chiang Mai Airport, Chiang Mai Neurological Hospital, Suang Prung Hospital and Mother and Child Hospital. “The first jab of Pfizer vaccine for those who choose the first cocktail will be available at vaccination units in Central Festival Chiang Mai and Chiang Mai University on December 3 only,” he added.

Songyos also said that since April this year Chiang Mai has recorded total Covid-19 deaths of 130 persons, 85 per cent of whom have never received a vaccine and were in high-risk groups. “Elders aged over 60 and those who have underlying health problems should get vaccinated immediately to prevent severe symptoms and deaths from Covid-19,” he warned.: https://www.nationthailand.com/in-focus/40009571

                      • Muscle pain, fatigue among initial symptoms of Omicron variant – DCD

Thailand’s Disease Control Department has published basic information about the new coronavirus variant, Omicron, so the public can monitor for physical symptoms. The initial symptoms include muscle pain and fatigue, but not serious, and the patients do not lose their sense of smell or taste, as in the case of infection by other variants.

Omicron spreads quickly and can reproduce faster than the “wild” coronavirus strains. There is no information yet about its severity, its incubation period, vaccine effectiveness or its immunity evasion capability.

Meanwhile, Head of the Centre of Excellence of Clinical Virology at Chulalongkorn University Dr. Yong Poovorawan offered advice on precautionary measures to cope with Omicron which, he predicted, will replace the Delta variant as the dominant strain in the near future.

In his Facebook post today, he recalled the various variants which have spread in Thailand and elsewhere before each of them is replaced with new one, beginning with the variant from China’s Wuhan city, to others such as Alpha and Delta, which became the dominant variant for a longer period than the others, ahead of the emergence of Omicron.

Citing scientific theory, Dr. Yong said that there is a likelihood that Omicron variant may spread across the world and arrive in Thailand by air, land or sea.

Citing previous lessons learnt, he said that most of the variants which entered Thailand did so over land, through porous borders, rather than by air.

One of the precautionary measures to cope with the Omicron variant, according to Dr. Yong, is to intensify vaccinations to cover all or almost all of the population, although the effectiveness of the available vaccines may be reduced with the new variant, but they can still prevent death or hospitalisation, citing information from South Africa, which shows 90% of those hospitalised were not inoculated.

He said that there are sufficient vaccines for everyone in Thailand and for booster shots.

Omicron has now been detected in 30 countries, including Singapore and India. It has not yet been detected in Thailand.: https://www.thaipbsworld.com/muscle-...n-variant-dcd/

                            • Public Health Ministry fails to administrate 100 million Covid-19 vaccine doses by Sunday

Public Health Ministry admitted on Saturday that they cannot achieve the target to administrate 100 million Covid-19 doses to citizens by Sunday.

Public Health Permanent Secretary Dr Kiattiphum Wongrajit said the total number of Covid-19 vaccine doses administered nationwide was 94 million doses, expecting to reach 95 million doses on Sunday.

"Even though we cannot reach the target, the total number of Covid-19 vaccine doses administered nationwide was very high," he said.

For rumours of protesters' move to hold a demonstration against vaccine mandate, Kiattiphum said people can decide whether they will receive Covid-19 vaccine jab or not, but he advised them to receive it to ensure the safety of themselves and others.

"Thailand has various types of Covid-19 vaccines, so people can choose vaccines freely," he added.: https://www.nationthailand.com/in-focus/40009625
