Factory caught RECYCLING used coronavirus face masks to sell again in Thailand

            Newsflare March 2, 2020, 10:00 PM GMT+7

Factory caught RECYCLING used coronavirus face masks to sell again in Thailand
Shocking footage shows how workers were IRONING used face masks before selling them again in Thailand.

Police raided the factory in Saraburi province, 65 miles north of Bangkok, on Monday (March 2) after complaints about the dodgy masks being sold to locals desperate for protection against the deadly coronavirus. The group were allegedly collecting dirty and discarded surgical masks, putting them through a washing machine and dryer, ironing them, repackaging them before selling them again as new.

Surgical masks are in short supply due to claims they can protect against the deadly coronavirus covid-19 currently sweeping across the world. Officers arrived in the afternoon and found the house recycling the face masks was connected to a local junk yard and rubbish dump, where they collected them from.

Inside the property they found thousands of white surgical masks and six male teenagers busy cleaning, ironing and re-packaging them. One of the teenagers, Kunanon Dermsunteer, 17, who was overseeing the process blamed his mother Chintana Namwichai for instructing him to do it.

He said: "All my mother told me was that we received the masks from a factory and we have to wash and iron them before putting them into the box. "We were all paid 1 THB (2.5 pence) for finishing one mask and usually do 300 to 400 a day."

Officers at the scene rang Chintana to ask about her operation. Footage shows how she told the police over the phone that she just hired the boy to remove metal pieces from the masks and sell them. District sheriff Somsak Kaewsena said they would interrogate the woman further and immediately shut down the operation.

He said: "The evidence and the process of her operation suggested that they were recycling the used surgical masks and selling them on, deceiving customers that they were new. "This behaviour is a fraudulent and is harming the people who are desperately in need of the masks during the contagious of the COVID-19."

Police Colonel Pairoj Treesopon said they believe the operation was illegal but they will have to collect more evidence before they start legal action. He said: "We will to close the business but we have to investigate more to collect all of the the evidence and then we will decide on the charges."

Thailand's health minister Anutin Charnvirakul said Monday people should make their own reusable cloth masks instead of relying solely on disposable surgical masks. He said 600,000 of the 1.3 million pieces produced nationwide per day are being allocated to the government for distribution to hospitals and big retailers.

More importantly, most are wearing the wrong type of loose fitting masks.

Remember, this one is contagious topically as well as airborne.

              Disinfectant wipes.
              Washing hands.
              Gloves.

.....and most of all - isolate yourself from people.

                • If you have the coronavirus, how long before symptoms show up?

The incubation period for a virus is the time between catching the virus and showing symptoms of disease. For the novel coronavirus SARS-CoV-2, health officials estimate an incubation period of between one and 14 days. Most people start showing symptoms about five days after becoming infected, according to the World Health Organization (WHO).

These estimates are based on what was observed in the early days of the virus outbreak in Wuhan, China, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reported. The estimates are also informed by what is known about the better-studied and related viruses MERS-CoV and SARS-CoV. SARS-CoV caused an outbreak of severe respiratory disease in 2002, and MERS-CoV emerged in 2012.

Still, this estimate may change as more information becomes available. Some reports suggest that the incubation period may be as long as 24 days, according to a recent review paper published in the journal JAMA.

It's not yet clear whether people infected with the new coronavirus are very contagious during the incubation period, though there have been reports of people transmitting the virus without showing symptoms. It is also unclear what proportion of people catch the virus but never develop any symptoms. Based on data from China, the WHO-China Joint Mission on Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) suggests that asymptomatic cases are rare. On the cruise ship the Diamond Princess, however, 392 of 705 cases were reported to be asymptomatic, the CDC reported. People who are reported as asymptomatic may later go on to develop symptoms, however.: https://www.livescience.com/coronavi...ms-appear.html - https://jamanetwork.com/journals/jam...rticle/2762510

New Hampshire has identified a second, presumptive case of coronavirus in a man who was in close contact with the first patient, who attended an event across the state border in Vermont

New Hampshire's first coronavirus patient, a hospital employee, went to an event tied to Dartmouth business school on Friday despite being told to stay isolated, officials say, and all others who went to the event are now being told to stay isolated.

The announcement on Tuesday came as state health officials said a second person in the state is presumed to have the new coronavirus, COVID-19. That person was in close contact with the first patient, and the officials expect more coronavirus cases may be found as they investigate.

The second, presumed patient is a man, according to the New Hampshire Department of Health and Human Services, which didn't provide additional details or say exactly where he came into contact with the first patient.

The first patient is an employee at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center, the hospital has announced. It is not aware of any patients being exposed in clinical areas and has identified any staff who might have been exposed.

State health officials said that the first coronavirus patient "attended an invitation-only private event on Friday" despite being told to stay isolated. That person has now been ordered to remain isolated and all others who came into "close contact" with them at the event were asked to stay isolated for 14 days.: https://www.nbcboston.com/news/natio...shire/2085211/

So....after the possible max number of 14 days, one begins to show signs and whatnot - already actively contagious and passed it on 200 [maybe more] times. And the cycle continues from those 200 souls....so forth.

Luckily, this one is not that potent/severe.

Thai quarantine flip-flop throws holidays into doubt

                      AFP March 4, 2020, 7:28 AM GMT+ https://www.yahoo.com/news/thai-quar...002808125.html
Foreign tourists take pictures next to Thai commuters with face masks as they wait for a canal boat in Bangkok

A Thai man has died from complications doctors say were due to the deadly coronavirus, though health officials were reluctant on March 2 to conclusively confirm the cause of his death.

Thailand threw possibly tens of thousands of holiday plans into confusion after the health minister ordered any new arrivals from eight countries to undergo quarantine for the coronavirus, before swiftly reversing the decision.

Health minister Anutin Charnvirakul posted an announcement Tuesday saying travellers from affected countries would be subjected to a 14-day quarantine "without exceptions".

The countries were China, South Korea, Japan, Germany, France, Singapore, Italy and Iran. Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan were also included on the list.

The post was removed hours later, and his official Facebook page was taken down.
Anutin is no stranger to gaffes.

Last month he lashed out at "Western" tourists for not wearing face masks, suggesting they should be expelled for putting others at risk. He later apologised on his Facebook page.

Tourism is a lynchpin of Thailand's economy, but the government has struggled to balance health concerns and virus control with salvaging flagging growth as Chinese visitors have evaporated.
The beginning of 2020 was supposed to bring seven million tourists to Thailand, but numbers have tumbled in the wake of the epidemic.

Anutin's apparent moment of indecision -- which fanned waves of concern on Twitter among Thais and foreign travellers -- was played down Wednesday by a ministry spokesman.

"We have to wait which country would designated as a risk country," said spokesman Taweesin Visanuyothin during a daily press briefing, explaining that Anutin needed the list to be "reviewed".
Similar uncertainty pervades the government's handling of the return of some 5,000 undocumented Thai labourers -- nicknamed "little ghosts" -- working in South Korea.

Premier Prayut Chan-O-Cha said Wednesday the workers who came from Korea's two hardest-hit areas -- Daegu and neighbouring North Gyeongsang province -- would be subjected to quarantine.
"This will make people feel more at ease," he said.

The others will return to their hometown where provincial health officers will monitor them daily, said an official from the Department of Disease Control.

South Korea has reported than 5,300 cases and 28 fatalities.

The Thai government's lack of monitoring of the returnees has spurred growing public anger after various accounts showed haphazard screening at Bangkok's airports.

Thailand has reported 43 confirmed infections and and one fatality linked to the virus.

New strain, flights cancelled and the Thai Full Moon Party cancelled
                                • Scientists in China say they have identified two types of coronavirus

Scientists studying the novel coronavirus in China discovered two different varieties of the infection could be spreading around the world.

Researchers at Peking University School of Life Sciences and the Institut Pasteur of Shanghai published a study on Tuesday, identifying a more aggressive type of the virus found in 70 percent of analyzed strains, with 30 percent belonging to a less aggressive variety, according to CNBC.

The study indicated that the more aggressive coronavirus primarily exists at the origin point of the virus in Wuhan, China. Researchers say the frequency of the more vigorous variety has diminished since early January.

The scientists in this study said the newly discovered variety of coronaviruses is most likely a mutation and maneuver of natural selection as the virus spreads and adapts. However, officials caution that the data in this study is still "very limited," according to the report.

"These findings strongly support an urgent need for further immediate, comprehensive studies that combine genomic data, epidemiological data, and chart records of the clinical symptoms of patients with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19)," the study said.

As of Wednesday, more than 94,000 people worldwide have contracted the deadly coronavirus, with more than 3,200 fatalities, according to Johns Hopkins data.: https://thehill.com/homenews/news/48...of-coronavirus - https://www.cnbc.com/2020/03/04/coro...-covid-19.html

Full Moon Party, the popular annual event held on Koh Pha-ngan in March , has been cancelled out of concerns of the Covid-19 outbreak, according to local authorities.

The chief district officer of Koh Pa-ngan has sent a letter to Surat Thani governor today (March 5) , informing him of the decision.

The government has asked state authorities to seek collaboration from the private sector to suspend activities which involve a mass gathering of people.

The related authorities on March 4 held a meeting with a Rin Beach business operator, which organises the Full Moon Party, on possible measures to prevent spread of the virus at the venue .
