    • Thailand heading towards recession as Covid-19 ravages world economy

Thailand will fall into an economic recession in the first half of this year and the middle- and lower-income groups will be hard hit, an economist has warned

"There is high chance that the country will be in a technical recession -- contraction of the economy for two consecutive quarters," said Anusorn Tamajai, director of Economic and Business Research Centre at Rangsit University.

The Thai economy has been largely impacted by slower growth as the coronavirus has spread globally. The Thai economy in the first quarter -- from January to March -- is expected to contract by 2 per cent year on year. The second quarter will also see negative growth, he warned. The Thai economy last year grew 2.4 per cent for the full year.

Middle-income and lower-income groups are expected to be hit hard as tourism and small business are severely impacted by the Covid-19 outbreak, he said.: https://www.nationthailand.com/busin...ernal_referral

Local coffee shop, Blenz, has a sign posted telling customers they cannot use their own cups for beverages...

        Fookin' hell...

Blenz is a Canadian franchise that started in Vancouver in 1992, now with around 64 stores in BC...

Also, toilet paper is flying off the shelves with panic buying...Some claim that the Chinese imports are limited...

The truth?...Someone posted on Facebook that one bloke sneezed and 100 others shit themselves...

^I see the first death in Canada from Coronavirus happened today in BC. By the way, Tim Horton's and Starbucks are also not taking our own cups to refill anymore because of the Coronavirus and Tim Horton's has stopped the Roll up the Rim campaign that is a yearly thing where people roll up their cup to win prizes/food (at least in Ontario).

          Update

I saw on the news today that Italy is on lockdown (nobody in or out) and that the government is advising people not to take a cruise. I don't know why they just don't stop cruises and flights altogether for awhile.. that'll stop the spread!

The stock market has crashed and they are now saying that we are heading into a recession... omfg! Gas prices have dropped here considerably.

Tourist arrivals plummet 44.3% in February due to coronavirus

The number of tourist arrivals in Thailand fell 44.3% in February from a year earlier, due to the coronavirus epidemic, the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) said on Monday.

Visitors from China, Thailand's biggest source of tourists, tumbled 85.3%, TAT Governor Yuthasak Supasorn told a meeting of tourism operators.

In the worst-case scenario, the number of foreign tourists may fall to 30 million this year from last year's 39.8 million, with spending down 22%, "if the virus situation bottoms in May," he said.

Just last week, Mr Yuthasak said tourist numbers might drop by 6 million this year.

Tourism is crucial to Thailand as spending by foreign visitors amounted to 1.93 trillion baht last year, or 11% of gross domestic product (GDP).

The government said last week it will seek cabinet approval on Tuesday for a $3.2 billion stimulus package to ease the virus impact.

But Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha said on Monday there would be no such cash handouts.

Southeast Asia's second-largest economy may grow less than 1% this year, Thanavath Phonvichai, dean and economics professor of the University of the Thai Chamber of Commerce, told reporters on Monday.

Growth in 2019 was 2.4%, the lowest in 5 years.

The central bank will closely monitor global oil prices and financial market developments and discuss them at its monetary policy review on March 25, Assistant Governor Chantavarn Sucharitakul said in a text message to reporters.

The central bank last month cut its key rate by a quarter point to a record low 1.0%. Most economists expect further easing this month.: https://www.bangkokpost.com/business...virus#cxrecs_s

              THAI passengers require health certificates

Thai Airways International now requires passengers departing from China, Italy and South Korea to present health certificates before they are issued boarding passes.

THAI president Sumeth Damrongchaitham announced the restriction on the airline's Facebook page late on Monday night.

The statement said passengers joining flights in areas seriously hit by coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) must present the health certificates to prove they are free of the disease.

THAI staff would issue boarding passes only to passengers with certificates, he said. This was in compliance with an instruction from the Civil Aviation Authority of Thailand.

The measure applies to passengers departing from all airports in virus-affected countries that THAI planes visit. It currently applies to Seoul and Busan in South Korea; Beijing, Chengdu, Guangzhou, Hong Kong and Shanghai in China; and Milan and Rome in Italy, Mr Sumeth said.: https://www.bangkokpost.com/thailand...h-certificates

The government has decided to suspend Visa on Arrival (VoA) for visitors from 18 countries at a meeting today (March 11), chaired by Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha, also head of the Covid-19 management centre.

Countries affected are Bulgaria, Bhutan, China, Cyprus, Ethiopia, Fiji, Georgia, India, Kazakhstan, Malta, Mexico, Nauru, Papua New Guinea, Romania, Russia, Saudi Arabia, Uzbekistan, Republic of Vanuatu, and Taiwan.

All visitors to Thailand should contact the Thai embassy in their countries prior to travel.

The cancellation of visa-free entry also applies to high-risk countries ( Italy, South Korea) and Hong Kong until the situation returns to normal.: https://www.nationthailand.com/news/...ernal_referral

Thai immigration officers at Bangkok airport diagnosed with COVID-19

                  AFP March 11, 2020, 2:05 PM GMT+7 https://www.yahoo.com/news/thai-immi...070534941.html

Two immigration officers at Bangkok's main airport have coronavirus and may have handled the passports of visitors to Thailand, a health official said Wednesday.

The men, both working at Suvarnabhumi airport, fell ill on March 7 and 8 respectively and potentially came into contact with arriving passengers in the days before their diagnosis.

One of the officers was among a team leading health screenings of Thai returnees from South Korea -- which has reported the second most COVID-19 infections in Asia after China.

"They were not working at the same spots," Sopon Iamsirithaworn of the Disease Control Department said.
"There is a chance they came into contact with foreigners or touched passports," he added.

Thailand's Interior Minister said Wednesday it will suspend visa-free arrivals from South Korea, Hong Kong and Italy, as well as visa-on-arrival from 18 countries -- including China and India.

All affected visitors must apply for visas at Thai embassies in their own countries and present a medical certificate.
Thailand's economy is heavily reliant on tourism.

The deadly virus has hammered the sector costing the country billions of dollars, mainly after Chinese tourists were quarantined on the mainland or stayed at home.

Many western visitors have also cancelled holidays or deferred bookings as Thai authorities issue a baffling barrage of advice.
After days drip-feeding conflicting information to holidaymakers, health authorities said on Friday there will be no compulsory quarantine for people from countries hardest hit by the virus.

Thailand has reported 59 cases of the new coronavirus, but there are concerns the low figure may be a reflection of very limited testing programme.

Flag carrier Thai Airways said from Friday it will suspend all flights to Italy, where over 630 people have died with around 10,000 infected so far.

                    • Songkran parties in Chiang Mai, Hat Yai cancelled

Two more popular Songkarn parties have been called off as the coronavirus epidemic continues to spoil the Thai New Year celebration for locals and tourists alike.

Chiang Mai Municipality on Wednesday announced the cancellation of all major activities for the Thai New Year in the northern city. The southern tourist city of Hat Yai has already called off festivities.

Songkran activities in Chiang Mai normally start from early April with small religious ceremonies with the highlights this year from April 13-15, when people go to temples for merit-making ceremonies and splash water in the city centre.

Chiang Mai mayor Thassanai Buranupakorn said on Wednesday all festival events involving large gatherings of people were being put on hold this year. They included water splashing, parades and ceremonies to worship buddha images.

One of the most famous events during Songkran in Chiang Mai is when people worship the Phra Buddha Sihing image, the statue most respected by local residents.

However, the city will still be adorned to celebrate the Thai New Year and exhibitions will promote Lanna culture, he said.

"Chiang Mai Municipality thanks every agency helping to contain the spread of Covid-19 so that our Chiang Mai remains a safe tourist destination," he said.

The Hat Yai Municipality on Tuesday cancelled its midnight Songkran party, planned for April 12-13, to help prevent the spread of the virus.

The party in Hat Yai draws tourists from Malaysia every year.

Songkran parties have also already been cancelled for Khao San Road, Pattaya, Bang Saen, Khon Kaen and Patong beach in Phuket.: https://www.bangkokpost.com/thailand...-yai-cancelled

The World Health Organization (WHO) is officially calling the coronavirus a pandemic.

"WHO has been assessing this outbreak around the clock and we are deeply concerned both by the alarming levels of spread and severity, and by the alarming levels of inaction," said the WHO Director General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.

"We have therefore made the assessment that Covid-19 can be characterized as a pandemic," he added.: https://thehill.com/policy/healthcar...rus-a-pandemic
