  • Thailand logs 2 Covid deaths, 143 cases Monday

The government reported 2 new Covid-19 deaths and 143 new cases on Monday, raising the death toll to 82 and the accumulated total to 24,714 since the start of the pandemic in January last year.

Both deaths were of elderly Thai men with underlying chronic conditions.

Apisamai Srirangson, assistant spokesperson for the Centre for Covid-19 Situation Administration (CCSA), said one of the two new fatalities was a 62-year-old vegetable vendor in Ubon Ratchathani province.

The man, who suffered from diabetes, renal disease and hypertension, started coughing on Jan 5. His condition deteriorated on Jan 8, and on Jan 9 he suffered severe lung inflammation and tested positive for Covid-19. His condition worsened over the next four days, and he died on Sunday morning.

The other death was of a 78-year-old man. His daughter, who the spokesperson said had been diagnosed with Covid-19, visited him at home on Jan 16 and 17. On Jan 19-20 he developed a cough and sore throat.

On Jan 22 he was diagnosed with severe lung inflammation and tested positive for Covid-19.

The man had several underlying conditions, and suffered a blood infection on Jan 30 and renal failure on Feb 7. He died on Saturday evening.: https://www.bangkokpost.com/thailand...3-cases-monday

    • Pathum Thani market spreading Covid-19

A Pathum Thani market was infected with Covid-19 from Samut Sakhon and has spread the disease to other provinces, according to a government spokeswoman.

Apisamai Srirangson, of the Centre for Covid-19 Situation Administration, said on Monday that Covid-19 cases linked to Samut Sakhon were first confirmed in Pathum Thani on Dec 22.

The carriers were mobile food vendors who had visited a seafood market in Samut Sakhon.

From Jan 4 to 13, disease control workers tested 3,432 people at Pornpat market in Thanyaburi district of Pathum Thani, part of outer northern Bangkok, and 45 of them, or 1.31%, tested positive for Covid-19, Dr Apisamai said.

The market had been closed but reopened on Jan 16.

On Jan 30, a Myanmar woman selling vegetables at the market had reported losing her sense of smell and taste. She tested positive for Covid-19 on Feb 7.

Active case finding then began, with 1,333 people at the market tested from Feb 9 to 13, and 175 of them were positive. This time the infection rate rose to 13.13% of tested people, Dr Apisamai said.

Pornpat market is enclosed but the building is not airconditioned. Most infected people work in the middle of the market. It has a low roof and ventilation is poor. Vendors tend to remove their face masks when it is hot, the spokeswoman said.

The market was on Friday ordered closed for five days, and is due to reopen on Wednesday. Health officials advise people who visited the market from Feb 9-13 to observe their health closely and visit a doctor or hospital if they notice any symptoms of Covid-19.

Dr Apisamai said many new Covid-19 cases had been linked to the market. They included 164 in Pathum Thani, seven in Nakhon Nayok, three in Phetchaburi, two each in Saraburi and Bangkok and one each in Ayutthaya, Ang Thong, Nakhon Ratchasima and Phrae.

On Sunday, Pathum Thani province reported 50 new Covid-19 infections, all found through active testing in communities - 37 Thais, eight Myanmar and five Lao people.: https://www.bangkokpost.com/thailand...ading-covid-19

          • First batch of Covid vaccine will arrive on Feb 24: Anutin

The first shipment of China’s Sinovac Covid-19 vaccine will arrive in Thailand on February 24, Public Health Minister Anutin Charnvirakul announced on Monday.

He said the first batch of 200,000 doses will leave China on February 20.They are expected to be the first Covid-19 vaccine to arrive in Thailand following a delay in shipments of the AstraZeneca vaccine procured by the Thai government.

"After the vaccine arrives, the Department of Medical Sciences will conduct random quality checks before it is used for inoculation," Anutin said.

He added that the Food and Drug Administration is poised to register the Sinovac vaccine for emergency use.

Sinovac said trials had shown around 50 per cent efficacy in preventing infection and 80 per cent efficacy in preventing cases requiring medical treatment.: https://www.nationthailand.com/news/...ernal_referral

            • Thailand - Govt considering 21-day quarantine for returnees from Africa

The Centre for Covid-19 Situation Administration is considering a longer mandatory quarantine for returnees arriving from Africa, in a bid to stem the spread of a fast-spreading variant of the novel coronavirus that was first detected in South Africa.

The South African variant, named "B1351", requires closer monitoring as it is known to spread more quickly, which could worsen the outbreak in Thailand, said the CCSA's assistant spokesperson, Apisamai Srirangson.

"We might need to increase the mandatory quarantine for returnees from Africa to 21 days," she said.

Dr Apisamai revealed the plan in response to the discovery of the South African mutation in a 41-year-old infected Thai returnee who flew in from Tanzania for business.

The man returned to Thailand on Jan 29 and entered state quarantine, where he tested positive for Covid-19 on Feb 3.

However, it wasn't until Feb 12 that health authorities determined the man was infected with the mutated variant of Covid-19.

Meanwhile, the Dean of Siriraj Hospital's Faculty of Medicine, Prasit Watanapa, insisted that the antiviral drug favipirapir, also known by its brand-name Avigan, can be used to treat patients infected with the South African variant, although no study has confirmed its efficacy.

Favipiravir is an antiviral medication used to treat influenza in Japan that has been prescribed to treat Covid-19 patients in some countries.

Prof Dr Prasit also said he is considering to ask each hospital to re-check swabs provided by Covid-19 patients, saying the government may need to change its tactics if the B1351 variant turns out to be more prevalent in Thailand than initially thought.

The B1351 variant was first detected in South Africa in Oct last year. Since then it has been found in more than 30 countries.

Similar to the UK variant, it quickly outcompeted other Sars-CoV-2 variants in South Africa. It now accounts for more than 90% of Sars-CoV-2 samples in South Africa that undergo genetic sequencing.: https://www.bangkokpost.com/thailand...es-from-africa

              • Thailand - Closure of virus-cluster markets in Pathum Thani extended

The provincial governor has extended the closure of two adjacent wet markets in Thanyaburi district for nine more days as efforts continue to stop the spread of the Covid-19 cluster centred there.

The markets were closed on Friday morning and due to reopen on Wednesday.

Governor Chaiwat Chuenkosum said on Tuesday that Pornpat and Suchart markets in tambon Prachathipat would remain closed through Feb 25.

During the extended closure, both sites would be fully disinfected.

The extended closure also covers commercial buildings in the vicinity of the two markets.

The governor was speaking after chairing a meeting of the provincial disease control committee, which has also prohibited crowds gathering at the markets and in their vicinity, ordered the 14-day home quarantine of migrant workers, and restricted access to the areas.

The measures cover commercial buildings around both markets and on Rangsit-Pathum Thani 17 Road and Rangsit-Nakhon Nayok 19, 21, 23, 25 and 27 roads.

Of the 72 new Covid-19 cases recorded nationwide on Monday, Pathum Thani logged 48.

Of these, 47 were detected during community testing and linked to local markets. They comprised 26 Thais, 18 Myanmar, two Lao and one Cambodian. The other was confirmed at a hospital and is a student.

The Centre for Covid-19 Situation Administration on Tuesday warned Pathum Thani people to take precautions against the disease.

The fact the infection rate was higher among Thais than migrants in Pathum Thani raised concerns, because Thais could spread the virus more widely than migrants, who generally worked and lived in a confined area, CCSA spokesman Taweesilp Visanuyothin said.

The spread of Covid-19 in Pathum Thani was linked to two local food vendors who bought seafood from Samut Sakhon, where the second wave began, in December.

Since Dec 18, Pathum Thani has logged 310 Covid-19 cases.: https://www.bangkokpost.com/thailand...thani-extended

                    • THAI to fly first vaccine shipment to Thailand on Feb 24

Thai Airways International will carry the first 200,000 doses of a Covid-19 vaccine from China to Thailand on Feb 24.

THAI chairman ACM Chaiyapruk Didyasarin said on Tuesday the airline had been chosen by the Public Health Ministry to transport the vaccine, supplied by China’s Sinovac Biotech Co.

A Thai Airways Airbus A350-900 would carry the shipment, comprising 200,000 doses. The plane would depart China at 6.50am (local time) on Feb 24 and arrive at Suvarnabhumi airport about 11.05am.

The airline had prepared for this important task, with refrigerated containers that could store goods at temperatures ranging from -20°C to +20°C, ACM Chaiyapruk said.

THAI also had staff experienced in moving cargo requiring strict temperature control, such as vaccines and other medical equipment, he said.

                          • Tourism veering from bad to worse

Airlines and hotels dubbed the tourism situation this year as being a worse crisis than the first outbreak of the pandemic, leaving them to cling to the hope of a remedy from the government.

Tassapon Bijleveld, executive chairman of Asia Aviation, the largest shareholder of Thai AirAsia (TAA), said when international tourists return in the future, Thailand might not have enough supply to serve them as most operators have already shut down due to financial problems.

Unlike the hotel business that saw 6 million room nights in the stimulus campaign fully redeemed, the air ticket quota of 2 million seats still has over 1.3 million seats available, even though the government increased the subsidy from 2,000 baht to 3,000 baht in December.

Mr Tassapon said those figures proved that local tourists skipped flying and shifted to destinations within driving distance, particularly after the fresh wave of Covid-19 starting from December.

Combined with lower purchasing power and travel restrictions in some areas, all airlines will see an even more opaque future as the industry already witnesses fewer flights per day at the moment, he said.

The Civil Aviation Authority of Thailand reported that the number of domestic passengers tumbled 27.1% year-on-year in the fourth quarter, while international flights dropped by 99.1% in the period.

TAA is now only operating 20 flights per day on average with just 10 aircraft, down from 40 jets prior to the second outbreak, while it has a total of 62 in the fleet.

"Not only are airlines facing an impact, but half of the restaurants and shops in Don Mueang airport have had to close temporarily which could indicate the lower level of consumption," said Mr Tassapon.

He said all of airlines may have to wait further for the soft loans under the supervision of the Export-Import Bank of Thailand (Exim Bank) as the government is likely to push aside this proposal until the no-confidence debate this week passes.

"We really have no idea about the details of the proposal from Exim Bank and don't know when the cabinet will mull this issue. It's like we're walking with blind eyes during the crisis now," said Mr Tassapon.

TAA suspended 75% of its workforce this month, offering most of them a leave-without-pay option, as it still hopes the situation will improve in the future. But he admitted that it's hard to give any forecast right now.

The tourism outlook for this year faces dimmer prospects again as the National Economic and Social Development Council on Monday predicted that the number of international tourists will plunge by half to 3.2 million compared with 6.7 million last year, down from an earlier estimate of 5 million.

Marisa Sukosol Nunbhakdi, president of the Thai Hotels Association, said the crisis this time is more difficult to deal with as it's hard to predict when business can get back to normal.

"When we seek loans, banks always request our business plan or the period we can earn profit, but under these circumstances, hotels don't really have a clue when will business get back to normal," according to Mrs Marisa.

She said 50% of hotels nationwide have been closed, while remaining hotel operators and their workforce struggle to survive.

Even though some hotels maintain positions for employees, their living standards were poorer as there was no service charge which is considered a mainstream revenue source for the hospitality business.

Some hotels have to offer their properties as shelters for workers as some of them were not able to pay their rent.

"We need support from the government, or else we could see the whole tourism industry collapse before things get back to a better shape," said Mrs Marisa.: https://www.bangkokpost.com/business...m-bad-to-worse

                            • Public can now register until March 5 at GSB, BAAC for new cash-handout scheme

The Government Savings Bank (GSB) and the Bank of Agriculture and Agricultural Cooperatives (BAAC) have joined Krungthai Bank in providing a registration service until March 5 for eligible candidates who want to avail of the government’s cash handout “RaoChana” (WeWin) campaign but do not own a smartphone, government deputy spokeswoman Ratchada Thanadirek wrote on her Facebook page on Wednesday.

Under the scheme, self-employed people, farmers and welfare cardholders whose savings do not exceed Bt500,000 will be given two monthly payments of Bt3,500 each in a bid to ease their financial burden during this Covid-19 crisis.

Registration could be done online, while people who do not have Internet access or a smartphone could register at Krungthai Bank nationwide, starting from February 15.

On Monday Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha asked the Finance Ministry to extend the registration period for people who do not have a smartphone, after learning that Krungthai Bank branches nationwide were swamped with people, especially the elderly, waiting to register.

This has led to Krungthai Bank extending the deadline from February 25 to March 5.

“To reduce crowding at Krungthai Bank’s branches, the GSB and the BAAC will also set up registration booths at their branches nationwide starting next Monday [February 22],” Ratchada said.: https://www.nationthailand.com/news/...ernal_referral

                              • 150 test positive for Covid-19, mostly in Samut Sakhon, Pathum Thani

The Centre for Covid-19 Situation Administration (CCSA) on Thursday reported 150 new cases, eight of whom are returnees in quarantine facilities.

Of the remaining 142, 38 were infected while visiting high-risk areas. Samut Sakhon leads this list with 26 cases, seven of whom are Myanmar nationals, followed by five in Bangkok, three in Pathum Thani and one each in Tak, Nakhon Pathom, Mahasarakham and Ayutthaya.

Proactive tests, meanwhile, led to the discovery of 104 cases, 62 of which were in Samut Sakhon and 42 in Pathum Thani.

Of the returnees, five are Thai nationals returning from Nigeria, South Africa and Bahrain, while the remaining three are Pakistan, Bangladesh and Uganda nationals who flew in from their respective countries.

Apisamai Srirangsan, assistant CCSA spokesperson, added that the 359 previous cases found to be linked to the Pornpat market in Pathum Thani had spread to 10 provinces, though 332 remained local. Of this cluster, seven were found in Nakhon Nayok, four each in Bangkok and Phetchaburi and the rest in other provinces.

Authorities plan to test up to 10,000 people per day in Pathum Thani in a bid to contain the virus as soon as possible.: https://www.nationthailand.com/news/...ernal_referral
