  • ^Yes but in the absence of a proper study it may be coincidental rather than causal

A recent large scale study in Colombia, showed no increased efficacy. However they had the happy problem of very few bad outcomes in either the Ivermectin or placebo groups. Participants were too healthy. This was widely reported as a failure for the drug.

The WHO is supposed to be doing a data crunch on Ivermectin, results out in April.

Suspect that most governments are currently shying away as a semi effective medicine could discourage vacinne uptake. We know vacinnes work.

      • Inactivated Thai vaccines expected to be approved by year end and begin manufacture next year

The Government Pharmaceutical Organisation and Mahidol University’s Faculty of Tropical Medicine have developed and are about to start human trials of an inactivated virus COVID-19 vaccine.

The participating volunteers must be in good health, have never been infected with COVID-19 and have no drug or vaccine allergies.

The human trials are divided into two phases.

For the first phase, 210 volunteers, aged 18-59, will be vaccinated, then scientists will analyse the data to develop two vaccine types for the phase two trials, which will begin in July, where 250 volunteers, aged 18-75, will be involved.

The Government Pharmaceutical Organisation will start producing the vaccines, after it has been approved and registered with the Food and Drug Administration.

It is expected to produce at between 25 and 30 million doses a year, after manufacturing begins in 2022.

          • Phuket tour bus operators seek government help after a year of unemployment

Tour bus operators on Thailand’s resort island of Phuket are asking for help from the provincial administration after being sued for missing their lease repayments, with some facing bankruptcy, due to a year of unemployment due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Phuket Bus Operators 30 Association, representatives of the Phuket Double Deck Tour Bus Operators Club and individuals involved in tour bus services met with Raywat Aree-rob, Head of the Phuket Provincial Administration Organisation, to discuways to alleviate the impact of the pandemic, especially lawsuits from non-bank agencies.

The representatives have also asked the province to help in negotiating with non-bank executives over the payment of installments, to enable them to avoid bankruptcy. They also want the government to focus not only on the hospitality sector, but include other tourism businesses, such as tour buses and boat operators, as well. They said that, in the past year, these groups have never been invited to discuss the problems they face with the government sector, including progress COVID-19 vaccinations.

Raywat said that he has informed the province and, from now, on they will include the bus operators in every meeting. As for their financial issues, Raywat said he has sent a letter on the matter to the Ministry of Finance and the Bank of Thailand.

As for COVID-19 vaccinations, he expects that there will be no problem and over 70% of Phuket’s population will be inoculated in time to meet the schedule for reopening the island to tourism.: https://www.thaipbsworld.com/phuket-...-unemployment/

            • Nearly 7,000 people get Covid jab in Bangkok hotspot

The Sinovac vaccine was administered on Monday to 1,399 people at risk of contracting Covid-19 in Bang Khae district, the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) said on Monday.

The vaccine drive started on March 17 with the BMA moving a mobile vaccination unit to Sirisetthanont Market in Bang Khae district, which is a hot spot of recent cluster cases. The Public Health Ministry and the BMA had aimed to inoculate 6,000 people facing risk of infection until March 22.On Saturday, the mobile unit moved to Inmanoradee Temple in Phasi Charoen district, which is adjacent to Bang Khae, to facilitate vaccination of wider groups.

Chawin Sirinak, BMA’s deputy permanent secretary, said 1,399 of the 1,429 registrants were vaccinated on Monday and 54 people did not get the jab either due to being physically unfit or they had a change of mind.

“Two people who got vaccinated on Monday had shown non-severe side-effects such as dizziness and lightheadedness. The patients got better after about 30 minutes of rest,” he added.

During the six days of the vaccine drive, the BMA has vaccinated 6,842 people in Bang Khae and nearby areas, exceeding its target, after which the mobile unit service at Inmanoradee Temple was closed.: https://www.nationthailand.com/news/30404011

                    • Thai seafood vendor tests positive for COVID-19 a week after inoculation

The COVID-19 Situation and Prevention Centre in Ratchaburi province announced today (Saturday) that a woman, who was inoculated against COVID-19 on March 18th, tested positive for the virus a week later.

The 29-year old is a fresh seafood vendor at the Kitti Market, in Bang Khae district of Bangkok, where a cluster of infections was first identified over a week ago.

According to her timeline, disclosed by the COVID-19 Situation and Prevention Centre:

March 10th-12th, she stayed at home in Muang district of Ratchaburi and did not go to the market, which was temporarily closed.
March 13th, she returned to the market, after undergoing a saliva test, with the test result to be texted to her smartphone.
March 14th-17th, she stayed at home in isolation, waiting for the test result.
March 18th, she returned to Kitti Market to be vaccinated. After inoculation, she drove, non-stop, back to Ratchaburi.
March 19th, she stayed at home in self-isolation.
March 20th, health officials escorted her to a quarantine facility in Ratchaburi, after finding out that she used to work at the Kitti Market.
March 21st-25th, she was in quarantine in Ratchaburi.
March 26th, she underwent another test, was told that she is infected and was admitted to the provincial hospital.

According to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), however, it typically takes a few weeks for the body to develop immunity after vaccination, adding “That means it’s possible a person could be infected with the virus that causes COVID-19 just before or just after vaccination and still get sick. This is because the vaccine has not had enough time to provide protection.”: https://www.thaipbsworld.com/thai-se...r-inoculation/

                            • Middle-aged women 'worst affected by long Covid', studies find

Middle-aged women experience the most severe, long-lasting symptoms after being treated in hospital for Covid-19, two UK studies suggest.

Five months on, 70% of patients studied were still affected by everything from anxiety to breathlessness, fatigue, muscle pain and "brain fog".

But the researchers say there is no obvious link with how ill people originally became.

How women's bodies fight off illness could explain their poorer recovery.

The larger study - led by the University of Leicester - which is yet to be peer-reviewed, followed up more than 1,000 patients who had been admitted to hospital with Covid-19 in the UK last year. It found that up to 70% had not fully recovered, an average of five months after leaving hospital, with women most affected.

More than 400,000 people have been admitted to hospital with Covid in the UK since the start of the pandemic.

A separate smaller pre-print study, led by University of Glasgow, found women under 50 were seven times more likely to be more breathless, and twice as likely to report worse fatigue than men of the same age who had had the illness, seven months after hospital treatment.

In the Leicester study, these lasting 'long Covid' symptoms stopped 18% of people returning to work and forced 19% to change their job.

Despite patients receiving a range of hospital care - with most given antibiotics, one-third receiving oxygen and just over a quarter ending up in intensive care - even those who had had short hospital stays still had ongoing problems.

People who hadn't returned to normal health were more likely to be female, white, aged between approximately 40 and 60, have two or more underlying conditions, and been on a ventilator.: https://www.bbc.com/news/health-56509340

                            • 39 new COVID-19 cases as new Saphan Soong cluster emerges

Thailand recorded 39 new COVID-19 cases today (Monday), as health officials keep a close watch on a new cluster in the Saphan Soong district of Bangkok, related to the Bang Khae market cluster.

A butcher, at a fresh market in Saphan Soong district, reportedly developed symptoms on March 11th and tested positive for COVID-19 two days later, after he had already spread the disease to his wife, who is an asymptomatic case. Seven other people in the same house have been placed under observation.

CCSA assistant spokesperson, Dr. Apisamai Srirangsan, said that a 57-year old lottery vendor in Saphan Soong has also been infected and the disease has already spread to four family members, including a 4-year old.

The northeastern province of Kalasin also reported its first infection, a 35-year old saleswoman, working at a department store in the province, who is reported to have travelled to Bangkok to visit a vendor friend at one of the markets in Bang Khae district.

Of the new cases today, 28 are locally-acquired infections and 11 are travelers from abroad in state quarantine. Cumulative infections, since early last year, are 28,773, with 27,313 recoveries. 1,366 others are still being treated in hospitals. The national death toll remains 94.

Of the 28 locally-acquired infections, 15 are in Bangkok and 10 in Samut Sakhon province.

Meanwhile, the Public Health Ministry has warned private hospitals not to advertise advance bookings for COVID-19 vaccinations to members of the public, claiming that the practice is illegal.

Dr. Thares Krasnairawiwong, director-general of the Health Service Support Department, said today that such advertising is against the law, because the department has not yet permitted any private hospital or clinic to accept vaccine bookings.

He said that the hospital in question has already agreed to pull the advertising from its webpage and other social media platforms.: https://www.thaipbsworld.com/39-new-...uster-emerges/

                              • Disease Control Dept. insists Thai seafood vendor had COVID-19 before inoculation

Thailand’s Disease Control Department said today (Sunday) that the vendor, who was thought to have become infected with COVID-19 after she was vaccinated was, in fact, infected prior to inoculation.

The department’s deputy director-general, Dr. Sophon Iamsirsithavorn, said today that the 29-year seafood vendor, at Kitti Market in the Bang Khae district of Bangkok, was tested on March 13th, which was negative and she did not exhibit any symptom related to the disease.

He said, however, that the vendor lived in a high-risk environment and the second test confirmed her infection.

Dr. Sophon cited information, from Thai virologist Dr. Yong Poovorawan, that the best “vaccine” is to protect oneself from becoming infected in the first place.

He further disclosed that, so far, 150,107 doses of vaccine have been used to inoculate people in Thailand and only two of them developed severe side effects. They were treated and recovered.

Meanwhile, commenting on a paint splashing event, held in Chiang Mai last week, Disease Control Department Director-General Dr. Opas Karnkawinpong explained that the organizer had received permission to hold the event, but enforcement of health and safety measures was lax.

Regarding the upcoming Songkran festival, in mid-April, he warned event organizers to exercise caution and not to lower their guard, to prevent the spread of the virus.: https://www.thaipbsworld.com/disease...e-inoculation/
