              • Global virus cases near million as US baby dies

Confirmed coronavirus infections around the world approached one million on Thursday as the pandemic spread at a "near-exponential" rate, with a six-week-old baby becoming one of the youngest known victims.

Half the planet is under some form of lockdown as governments struggle to tamp down a virus that has killed tens of thousands of people.

Those restrictions -- while necessary for health -- risk causing global food shortages, experts have warned, as supply chains gum up and panic buying sparks export controls.

The death toll from Covid-19 continued its relentless march upwards, with more than 46,000 people known to have died worldwide.

The United States, which now accounts for almost a quarter of reported global infections, logged its 5,000th death overnight, according to a tally by Johns Hopkins University.

Among the latest US fatalities was a six-week-old baby who was taken to a Connecticut hospital late last week.

"Testing confirmed last night that the newborn was Covid-19 positive," the state's Governor Ned Lamont tweeted. "This is absolutely heartbreaking."

The new coronavirus has chiefly affected the elderly and those with pre-existing medical conditions, but a number of recent cases have highlighted that it can affect people from all walks of life.

The dead have included a 13-year-old in France, a 12-year-old in Belgium and 13-year-old Ismail Mohamed Abdullah in Britain, whose family said the "gentle and kind" boy had no underlying health issues.

              • 104 more Covid patients, three new deaths

The Thai government on Thursday reported 104 new local cases of coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) infections, bringing the total to 1,875, with three new deaths raising the toll to 15.

Dr Taweesin Visanuyothin, spokesman of the government's Centre for Covid-19 Situation Administration, said one of the three deaths was a Thai man, 57, who returned from Pakistan and died on a south-bound train from Bangkok to Sungai Kolok while in Prachuap Khiri Khan province on Monday.

The man went to Pakistan on Feb 22. He returned via Suvarnabhumi airport on March 29 and boarded the train at 3pm on Monday. He also suffered from diabetes and hypertension.

His death resulted in the quarantine of 15 railway officials who came in close contact with him.

Another new death was a Thai man, 77, who had suffered diabetes and emphysema. He was in contact with a previous Covid-19 patient.

On March 18 he had a fever of 38 degrees Celsius, a cough and sore throat. He was admitted at a hospital in Pattani province. His condition became critical on March 20 and he died on Tuesday.

The third was a Thai man, 55, who was a public transport driver at Suvarnabhumi airport in Samut Prakan province.

He went home to Surin province on March 15 and returned to Bangkok the following day. On March 18 he had a fever and dry cough and felt exhausted and sought treatment at a clinic. On March 21 his tiredness was worse. He was admitted at a hospital in Bangkok on Sunday and died on Wednesday.

Of the new 104 patients found in 21 provinces, 41 were in close contact with previously detected patients, 11 returned from other countries, 10 visited entertainment places, eight attended religious ceremonies in Indonesia, eight worked closely with foreigners, three were foreign visitors, two were in contact with travelers from other countries, two others were medical officials, one visited a crowded place, and another visited a boxing stadium.

The accumulated 1,875 patients were in 62 provinces. Of them, 1,598 were Thai. In Bangkok and Nonthaburi there have been 1,005 cases.: https://www.bangkokpost.com/thailand...ree-new-deaths

                • As Covid-19 cases rise, Thailand shuts doors on new arrivals

Thailand will bar arrivals from Thursday (April 2) until April 15 due to the increasing number of Covid-19 cases.

Taweesin Visanuyothin, the spokesman for the Centre for Covid-19 Situation Administration, said that Prime Minister Prayut Chan-ocha had ordered the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to issue a new directive prohibiting new arrivals.

The total number of Covid-19 cases in Thailand hit 1,875 with 104 new infections confirmed over a 24-hour period and three patients dying.: https://www.nationthailand.com/news/...ernal_referral

                • Govt temporarily blocks all travel

The government will block all travel to Thailand, including by Thais, for half a month to prepare "state quarantine" facilities after more local patients have been linked to imported cases.

Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha said the government needs time to properly prepare for state quarantine.

"Related agencies will in the meantime prepare the places and coordinate with Thai embassies to ensure all Thais returning home will be quarantined and get proper medical checks," he said.

Dr Taweesin Visanuyothin, spokesman of the government's Centre for Covid-19 Situation Administration, said on Thursday that Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha told the centre that arrivals by foreigners and Thais would have to be slowed down "to stop the disease".

"If the number of arrivals does not drop, people in our country will be infected," he said.

The new measure started immediately on Thursday and will continue until April 15. It will not apply to people who earlier sought permission to travel to Thailand, he said.

Affected Thai people should contact Thai embassies and followed their instructions, he said.

Dr Taweesin said recent arrivals had proved to be a major source of local infections. The cases included the infected Thai man who had visited Pakistan and died on a south-bound train in Prachuab Khiri Khan province.

He also cited six Thais who returned from meetings in Italy, four of whom tested positive. The cases led to the quarantine of 50 other people.

Besides, of the 132 Thai who had attended religious activities in Malaysia, 47 contracted the disease, four died and about 1,000 others were quarantined.

Of the 56 Thais who had attended religious ceremonies in Indonesia, 32 were infected and about 500 were quarantined.

Four Thai people from England contracted the disease and one of them died. This group included one who concealed his symptoms and returned to the country, Dr Taweesin said. About 200 people were quarantined as a result.

Besides, 19 Thais crossing the border from Poi Pet town of Cambodia were infected and about 300 had to be quarantined.

Some visitors proved to carry the disease and most of them came from Europe, Dr Taweesin said.

"This is a lesson and we must adapt ourselves," he said.

Up until now, Thais seeking to return home by air were required to have fit-to-fly certificates and letters from embassies comfirming they are Thai nationals seeking to return home.

Foreign travellers to Thailand had to show authorities a health certificate, issued no more than 72 hours before travelling, confirming that they had been tested and are free from the virus. They must also present an insurance policy showing minimum coverage for coronavirus of not less than US$100,000.

It remains unclear whether these measures will come into effect again after April 15.: https://www.bangkokpost.com/thailand...cks-all-travel

They decided against it, feeling it was unnecessary because so far there were no Covid-19 cases in the province.

Trat governor Wichian Limwongyoo, who chairs the provincial communicable disease panel, was expected to go to Koh Chang on Friday to meet the local leaders there.

                      • I fear the way they may or may not handle things...When was Songkran (sp) supposed to begin?...April 13th?...They certainly won't be able to control the drinking (and maybe driving), etcetera, whether it's cancelled or not...

The Full Moon is on the 7th, I believe, so at least they may blow part of their load a tad early...

Just have to wait and see how it plays out...Much like anywhere else...

                        • Songkran will go ahead as planned for some, in more rural poors parts, that's for sure.

Sadly many don't have brain capacity to realise the seriousness of most things

The Civil Aviation Authority of Thailand (CAAT) has prohibited all aircraft from entering Thailand for three days after some 100 Thais, who landed at Suvarnabhumi Airport on Friday (April 3) evening, refused to go to quarantine facilities in Bangkok and Chonburi, claiming they were not notified in advance of the procedures.

The CAAT issued the order a few hours after the incident on Friday. The order signed by CAAT director-general Chula Sukmanop cites Sections 27 and 28 of Air Navigation Act BE 2497 to prevent the spread of Covid-19 and to resolve the situation as quickly as possible.

According to the order, all aircraft carrying passengers will be prohibited from entering Thailand from 0.01am on April 4 until 11.59pm on April 6, with exception for state or military aircraft, emergency landing, technical landing of aircraft without passengers, humanitarian aid, medical and relief flights, repatriation flights and cargo aircraft.

The order stipulates that all passengers who had embarked from airports before the order came into effect must be under restrictions regarding communicable disease prevention under Section 9 of Emergency Decree on Public Administration BE 2548, and must be held in quarantine for 14 days.: https://www.nationthailand.com/news/...ernal_referral
