  • Trump lies / makes reckless comments, his turd-polishers spring into action:

Making himself an example for using a malaria drug against the coronavirus, President Donald Trump sent the White House scrambling Tuesday to defend his decision amid medical concerns the unproven treatment could spark misuse of a medication with potentially fatal side effects.

Trump's announcement a day earlier that he was taking the drug, hydroxychloroquine, caught many in his administration by surprise and set off an urgent effort by officials to justify his action. The President's own government has warned that the drug should be administered for Covid-19 only in a hospital or research setting [...]

The drug has the potential to cause significant side effects in some patients and has not been shown to combat the virus.
    Trump lies people die.

Fascinating really. There are a few posters on here who could probably shed some light on it and their motivations for doing so...

      • Trump: "By the way, you know when you say that we lead in cases, that's because we have more testing than anybody else, so when we have a lot of cases, I don't look at that as a bad thing, I look at that as, in a certain respect, as being a good thing because it means our testing is much better"

I was going to say *Spoiler Warning* but then I guess that precisely nobody would be surprised to learn that the U.S. does not actually 'test more than anybody else' and is in fact 15th in per-capita testing rates. Trump lies and bullshits his way through a pandemic, people die.

Well you could "shed some light" on why you "feel the need" to sneer at him 100 times per week for the past five years, and then ask them about their motive for what they do....

Edit: though I should probably clarify that I'm talking specifically in relation to Trump here. On this forum there is understandably scope for confusion over which pathological liar, serial fantasist, and narcissist posters are in thrall to.

              That's most welcome.

Because you could have been referring to a lawyer in Bangkok who thought he'd make a few bob out of a pathological liar and serial fantasist narcissist in Chiang Mai by relaying his hilarious threats about being arrested by immigration for refusing to behave in the kowtowing manner demanded by said narcissist.

They're the same sort of asiaphile weirdo that wouldn't dare say a word about Xi, the president of the land that unleashed its filthy virus on the world and has probably massively unreported cases and deaths on a level typical of the seedy commie shithole it is.

                  • 70 cases of COVID-19 at French schools days after re-opening

PARIS -- Just one week after a third of French schoolchildren went back to school in an easing of the coronavirus lockdown, there has been a worrying flareup of about 70 COVID-19 cases linked to schools, the government said Monday.

Some lower grades in schools were opened last week and a further 150,000 junior high students went back to the classroom Monday as further restrictions were loosened by the government. The move initially spelled relief: the end of homeschooling for hundreds of thousands of exhausted French parents, many of whom were also working from home.

But French Education minister Jean-Michel Blanquer sounded the alarm Monday, telling French radio RTL that the return has put some children in new danger of infection. He said the affected schools are being closed immediately. French media reported that seven schools in northern France were closed.

The situation highlights the precarious situation the French government finds itself in as it seeks both to reassure the public that the country is moving forward past coronavirus and to react prudently to safeguard public health.

Blanquer did not specify if the 70 cases of COVID-19 were among students or teachers.

Given that the incubation period for the virus is several days, people are “likely” to have been infected before the reopening of the schools, he said.

France reopened about 40,000 preschools and primary schools last week, with classes capped at 15 students.

About 30% of children went back to school, Blanquer said. The government has allowed parents to keep children at home.

This week France is reopening junior high schools in regions less affected by the virus, which do not include Paris.

Although the idea of children being silent “super-spreaders” has been largely debunked in recent analyses, last week France recorded its first death of a child linked to Kawasaki disease, a mysterious inflammatory syndrome that some doctors say could be triggered by COVID-19.

The 9-year-old boy in Marseille was one of 125 children in France currently with the syndrome.: https://abcnews.go.com/Health/wireSt...ening-70740749
                  • 2 children in South Florida hospitalized for inflammatory illness linked to coronavirus

At least two children in South Florida are hospitalized for an inflammatory illness that health officials believe is connected to COVID-19.

The kids are being cared for at Holtz Children’s Hospital in Miami, Jackson Health System confirmed Tuesday morning.

“Holtz Children’s Hospital has two confirmed cases that meet the criteria for multi-system inflammatory syndrome. Both patients are receiving appropriate treatment in the pediatric intensive care unit, and are showing signs of improvement. We have no additional information to release at this time,” Jackson Health System said in an emailed statement to the Miami Herald.

Multi-system inflammatory syndrome in children, or MIS-C, has been described as “inflammation (swelling) across multiple body systems,” according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. This can include the heart, lungs, kidneys, brain, skin, eyes and gastrointestinal organs.

The CDC sent out a health advisory to doctors across the country last week, alerting them to the syndrome, which can begin weeks after a child is infected with COVID-19, including in those who were asymptomatic. The advisory lists potential MIS-C patients as those who are younger than 21.

Doctors in the United Kingdom first alerted other doctors to the syndrome in April. Since then, MIS-C has been seen in children across Europe and in at least 18 states, plus Washington, D.C., CNN reports.

Many of the children diagnosed with the syndrome tested positive for COVID-19, were previously infected with the novel coronavirus or had contact with someone who tested positive for COVID-19. It’s still unknown if the syndrome can also affect adults or if there are certain children who are at higher risk of falling ill with the syndrome.

Florida’s Department of Health did not immediately respond to the Miami Herald’s inquiry about how many confirmed or possible reports it had received about the syndrome.

Symptoms associated with MIS-C can include fever, abdominal and neck pain, vomiting and diarrhea, rashes and feeling tired, but not all children will have the same symptoms, according to the CDC. Its symptoms can sometimes be similar to those of Kawasaki disease, which primary affects children younger than 5.

Parents who notice their children experiencing any of the mentioned symptoms or other concerning signs should contact their pediatrician, the CDC says.

Children should also be taken to the ER immediately if they begin to experience “emergency warning signs” including trouble breathing, persistent pain or pressure in the chest, new confusion, inability to wake or stay awake, bluish lips or face or severe abdominal pain.

The CDC says it’s working with state and local health departments across the United States and with international partners to learn more about MIS-C, including how common it is and who is at risk.

ARE KIDS AT HIGHER RISK OF COVID-19 INFECTION?
The CDC says children “do not appear to be at higher risk for COVID-19 than adults” and the children who do fall ill with the disease “have generally shown mild symptoms” such as fever, runny nose and coughing.

As of April 2, there have been three deaths among children in the United States who were known to have tested positive for COVID-19, but it’s still “unclear” how the disease contributed to their cause of death, the CDC says. None of the deaths were in Florida.: https://www.miamiherald.com/news/cor...242833706.html

                          • Health workers fighting coronavirus around the world threatened by violence

Fear and misinformation fuel worldwide attacks attacks against some who are risking their lives to save their fellow human beings from disease.

As Dr. Trupti Katdare and her colleague, Dr, Zakia Sayyed, traced the contacts of a patient who had tested positive for the coronavirus, a mob set upon them, yelling and throwing stones.

"It was very scary," Katdare said of the incident, which took place April 1 in the Indian city of Indore. "We didn't understand what was happening. We were going to save their lives. What are they thinking?"

In her terror, Katdare's thoughts turned to her husband, her two children and the rest of her family, whom she had separated from while staying in a hotel to avoid transmitting the disease.

While doctors and nurses fighting the pandemic have been celebrated around the world, some have become the targets of attacks fueled by fear and misinformation.

In India, at least 35 violent incidents of mobs or riots involving health care workers were recorded in April, according to the Armed Conflict Location & Event Data Project, a U.S.-based nonprofit that tracks global violence and unrest. Worldwide, more than 200 such incidents have been documented this year.

The agency, the South Western Ambulance Service, said it recorded a 16 percent increase in violence against its paramedics and other health care workers in the last year through April compared with the same period the previous year — although it has not looked specifically at the number of pandemic-related incidents.

Most recently, a 43-year-old man in Stroud, about 100 miles west of London, was sentenced to 20 weeks in jail for threatening a paramedic and then coughing in his face, police said last month.

Attacking health care workers is not new, Fast said. Violence is often directed at health care workers in war to prevent certain groups from getting care.

Last week, gunmen stormed a hospital operated by Doctors Without Borders in Kabul, Afghanistan. The Taliban has denied responsibility for the attack, and the Islamic State terrorist group has remained silent.

The International Committee of the Red Cross says reports have emerged of incidents not just in conflict zones but also on public transportation and even in the homes of health care workers.

Annette Kennedy, president of the International Council of Nurses, said in a statement last week: "Stigmatization and violence against nurses and other health workers in some countries is shocking; the only response is zero-tolerance."

Andrea Melissa Peniche Kantun, 27, a secretary at a public-run hospital in Mérida, Mexico, said she's worried for her mother, Ligia Esther Kantun, 59 — "the person that I love most" — who is a nurse at the hospital. She was attacked April 8 when she stopped to buy water.

"When she got out of her vehicle ... a man in a black car passed by and threw boiling coffee on her back," Kantun said.

"Nobody, absolutely nobody, should violate the integrity of health workers in any circumstance, and even less in the middle of a health emergency like we are living with COVID-19," Dr. Arturo Olivares Cerda, secretary general of the union, said in a statement.

Kantun said that if she had the opportunity to speak to the man who injured her mother, she would want to make him and others like him understand the damage they are doing.

"Today the medical and nursing staff are fighting to save us. They are risking their lives and their families to save yours," she said. "We owe thanks and respect to everyone who is working in a hospital.": https://www.nbcnews.com/news/world/h...lence-n1210261

                            • Trump falsely claims hydroxychloroquine 'doesn't harm you'
Trump doubled down on his criticism of a hydroxychloroquine study, which showed coronavirus patients who were treated with the anti-malaria drug saw a significantly higher death rate.

                              May 19, 2020
According to the results of a study of hundreds of patients at US veterans health administration medical centers, 97 patients who took hydroxychloroquine had a 27.8% death rate, while the 158 patients who did not take the drug had an 11.4% death rate.

“That was a false study done, where they gave it very sick people. Extremely sick people. People that were ready to die,” Trump said. “It was given by obviously not friends of the administration.”

Trump went on to falsely claim that evidence suggests hydroxychloroquine does not have negative side effects. “What has been determined is it doesn’t harm you,” Trump said.

In reality, the Food and Drug Administration has said hydroxychloroquine should only be used as a coronavirus treatment in hopsital settings, due to “reports of serious heart rhythm problems” in virus patients who had received the drug.

When a reporter mentioned the FDA guidance, Trump said, “That’s not what I was told.”
