Two new local deaths related to Covid-19 and 1,458 new infections have raised the death toll to 110 and the number of cases to 46,643.

Apisamai Srirangson, a spokeswoman for the Centre for Covid-19 Situation Administration, said on Wednesday the 109th death was a Thai woman, 56, in Bangkok who suffered from diabetes, hypertension, chronic renal failure and obesity.

The woman developed a cough and a fever on April 10. On April 13 she was tested for Covid-19 and the result returned positive the following day.

She was admitted to hospital last Saturday with breathing difficulties. An X-ray found severe lung inflammation. On Monday her respiratory system failed and she died at 4.19pm that day.

The 110th death was a Thai man, 32, in Nonthaburi province. He had allergies and was in contact on April 4 with a since confirmed Covid case.

On April 8, he had a mild fever and a cough with blood in his phlegm, which was a common symptom lately, Dr Apisamai said. On April 15 he became fatigued and was admitted to hospital the following day.

An X-ray found severe lung inflammation. His condition deteriorated and he died on Monday.

The 1,458 new cases confirmed on Tuesday comprised 1,454 local infections and four quarantined arrivals, from Japan (two Japanese, one Thai) and Malaysia (a Thai woman).

Of the 1,454 local infections, 1,346 were confirmed at hospitals and 108 detected through mass testing in communities.

Bangkok logged 365 new cases comprising 84 linked to markets, communities and transport services, 31 to entertainment places, parties, concerts and restaurants, and 250 who were in contact with previously infected people.

So far this month, the capital had 4,329 cases and adjacent provinces reported a total of 2,656 cases, Dr Apisamai said.

Chiang Mai had 134 new cases, Chon Buri 80, Nonthaburi 69, Rayong 64, Samut Prakan 54 and Phrachuap Khiri Khan 47.

"Many new cases are people who were in contact with previously confirmed cases and this raises the number of infections among family members and the local community," she said.: https://www.bangkokpost.com/thailand...1458-new-cases

      • 7 more fatalities and 1,470 new COVID-19 infections recorded in Thailand on Thursday

Seven more COVID-19 patients, most of them with underlying conditions, such as diabetes, hypertension or heart disease, have died, as 1,470 new COVID-19 cases were recorded today. While fewer cases are being found during active screening, in contrast with increased hospital admissions.

The death toll, for just the month of April, has jumped to 16,compared to 67 deaths during the entire first wave of the pandemic, which lasted several months last year, and 27 in the second wave, from mid-December to the end of March.

CCSA spokesman Dr. Taweesin Visanuyothin said that there have been several new clusters of infections in the past five days, with five clusters resulting in 71 infections in the northeastern province of Nakhon Ratchasima, adding that the super spreader event was a birthday party, at which 47 people became infected.

In Bangkok alone, 447 new cases were recorded today, bringing the total, since the beginning of this month, to 4,475. Nonthaburi has 118 new cases, Chiang Mai 99 and Chon Buri 97.

Regarding the post-vaccination severe side effects, which affected six medical personnel in Rayong province, Dr.Taweesin said that the partial paralysis was related to their vaccinations, but was not linked to any specific batch of the vaccine, and inoculation with Sinovac vaccine will continue.

He cited a report from the World Health Organization about the possible incidence of severe side effects, resembling stroke, among a handful of those inoculated adding, however, that there is no conclusion yet about any link between vaccines and thrombosis (blood clots).

Meanwhile, Dr. Thiravat Hemachudha, chief of the Emerging Infectious Disease Health Science Centre of Chulalongkorn University, said today that the Sinovac vaccine that was used on the six medical personnel in Rayong, might have been contaminated during the production or bottling process.

He said, however, that inoculation with the Sinovac vaccine should continue, but those vaccinated must be kept under observation for at least half an hour and remain alert to any post-vaccination side effects, so they can be treated in time if they occur.: https://www.thaipbsworld.com/7-more-...d-on-thursday/

          • Thailand - Six suffer partial paralysis after inoculation with Sinovac vaccine

Six people, who were inoculated with the Sinovac vaccine in Thailand’s eastern coastal province of Rayong, developed partial paralysis and had to be given medication to dissolve blood clots, said Dr. Thiravat Hemachudha, head of the Emerging Infectious Disease Health Science Centre of Chulalongkorn University, in his Facebook post yesterday (Tuesday). All those affected have now recovered.

Dr. Thiravat said that the blood clots might have been caused by a specific batch of the vaccine.

Meanwhile, in the northeastern province of Udon Thani, the director of Udon Thani Hospital, Dr. Ruethai Watthanavinit, was recently diagnosed with COVID-19, raising the total number of infected medics to eight, including three doctors, three nurses, a domestic worker and one patient attendant.

50 other people, considered to be at risk due to their close contact with the infected medics, have been quarantined in “hospitels”, courtesy of the private sector in the province.

16 new COVID-19 cases were recorded in the province today, bringing the total number of infections there to 196, several of which were linked to a nightspot. So far, one patient has recovered.

Of these, 105 are being treated in general hospitals with some in intensive care, but their conditions are not severe and do not yet need a respirator.: https://www.thaipbsworld.com/six-suf...novac-vaccine/

              • Airlines see covid setbacks driving industry to $48 billion loss

The airline industrys chief lobby group widened its estimate for losses this year by about a quarter, saying new covid-19 flare-ups and mutations have pushed back the timeline for a restart of global air travel.

Carriers will lose about $48 billion in 2021, the International Air Transport Association said Wednesday in an online presentation. It had earlier forecast a $38 billion deficit.

"This crisis is longer and deeper than anyone could have expected," said Willie Walsh, the former chief of British Airways owner IAG, who's now IATA's director general. "Losses will be reduced from 2020, but the pain of the crisis increases."

The downward pivot comes as airlines contend with new travel bans and restrictions arising from outbreaks in large aviation markets such as India and Brazil. Governments of countries that have ramped up vaccinations most quickly have become cautious about restarting travel to prevent the import of new variants that could prove resistant to jabs.

This week, the U.S. State Department said it would declare about 80% of the world's nations no-go zones. In Europe, the U.K. has held off on confirming a plan to restart travel in mid-May, saying it will decide closer to the date. While some countries are starting to open up to vaccinated tourists, progress toward so-called vaccine passports has proven slow and complex.

After the industry lost about $126 billion in the teeth of the crisis during 2020, there were high hopes for a rebound in air travel during the first half of this year. IATA now says the crucial summer season is at risk.

Demand will reach 43% of 2019 levels during 2021 -- a more optimistic outlook than issued in February, but less bullish than in December, when vaccines were first being rolled out. At that time IATA saw traffic this year recovering to about half of pre-pandemic levels.: https://www.nationthailand.com/international/40000078

                • Thailand - ICU beds filling up as Covid infections surge

The Public Health Ministry is racing to increase the number of intensive care beds for Covid-19 patients as the rate of infection soars, with ICU units filling up.

Taweesilp Visanuyothin, spokesman for the Centre for Covid-19 Situation Administration, said on Friday that Bangkok had 262 beds in intensive care units, and 69 of them were unoccupied.

If Covid infections continued to rise by 1,500 a day, all ICU beds in Bangkok would be occupied in 6-8 days.

"The one-week bed reserve is considered to be insufficient. Bangkok has very little time left," the spokesman said, after announcing 2,070 new Covid-19 cases confirmed in the previous 24 hours.

The Public Health Ministry was trying its best to increase the number of ICU beds. More beds could be added in existing ICUs, which might be expanded. Other patients might be moved out of existing ICU beds and field ICUs could be built, Dr Taweesilp said.

He said there were about 1,000 ICU beds nationwide and if infections rose by 1,500 a day, they would all be occupied in 19 days.

"Impacts are certain, and the end result remains unpredictable," the spokesman said.

He said that 1,423 Covid-19 cases were waiting for hospital beds.

"The problem is weighty... Please be patient. Officials are trying their best to increase the number of beds," Dr Taweesilp said.: https://www.bangkokpost.com/thailand...fections-surge

                  • 418 Covid-19 patients suffer from severe symptoms, over 100 on respirators

The Ministry of Public Health reported on Saturday that of the 22,327 Covid-19 patients hospitalised, 418 had severe symptoms, while 113 patients were on respirators.

“Bangkok has reported the highest number of severe patients at 45, followed by nine in Samut Prakan, eight in Chonburi and six in Nonthaburi,” said the department.

On Friday, Bangkok reported 740 new cases in the province, driving cumulative cases up to 5,515, the highest in Thailand.: https://www.nationthailand.com/in-focus/40000180

                    • Thailand Tourism goals dashed after third Covid surge

The government has halved its expected number of international visitors to 3-4 million this year and slashed its tourism revenue forecast.

Tourism and Sports Minister Phiphat Ratchakitprakarn said this month's third outbreak of Covid-19 had battered tourism sentiment just as it was showing signs of rebounding after the second virus surge subsided.

Total tourism revenue for 2021 was being revised down from 1.218 trillion baht to 850 billion baht, the minister said.

Mr Phiphat pointed to yesterday's new daily record of 2,070 infections and the great uncertainty over how the pandemic would pan out.

All things combined, he said, any hope of the country achieving its previous goal of attracting 6.5 million foreign tourists this year had been shattered.

His ministry had now revised down its tourism revenue target from 348 billion baht to 300 billion, with the other 550 billion baht coming from the domestic market, down from its earlier forecast of 870 billion.

The government is now expecting international arrivals in 2021 to be just 3-4 million, a little over half its previous forecast of 6.5 million.

Meanwhile, local tourists are tipped to take about 100-120 million trips this year, down from 160 million in the previous forecast, after the pandemic destroying tourism sentiment during the Songkran holidays.

However, authorities will continue with their plan to bring in vaccinated international visitors via a pilot project called Phuket Sandbox in July.

The Tourism and Sports Ministry will help distribute Covid-19 vaccines to cover 70% of Phuket's residents to prepare for international tourists.

The government is also gearing up to procure more vaccines to cover those in need.: https://www.bangkokpost.com/business...rd-covid-surge

                              • CDC study on COVID-19 long-haulers: Two-thirds of non-hospitalized patients received new diagnoses

A Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) study released Friday found that two-thirds of non-hospitalized COVID-19 patients received some kind of new diagnosis up to six months after contracting the virus, supporting concerns about later health problems.

The research, done in partnership with Kaiser Permanente Georgia, found that 69 percent of patients had one or more outpatient medical visits between 28 and 180 days after their initial COVID-19 diagnosis.

The study examined electronic record data of health care visits from 3,171 patients if they were not hospitalized in the first 28 days after their coronavirus diagnosis. A total of 2,177 patients had at least one medical visit between 28 and 180 days after the COVID-19 diagnosis, amounting to almost 8,000 visits total.

Among patients with medical visits, 68 percent received a new diagnosis and 38 percent visited a new specialist who did not treat the patient in the year before the COVID-19 diagnosis.

Patients who were older than 65, women, non-Hispanic Black patients and those with underlying health conditions were more likely to have an outpatient medical visit. The scientists suggested this could be partly because some groups are disproportionately affected by the coronavirus and are at higher risk for post-COVID-19 conditions.

The new diagnoses included cough, shortness of breath, chest or throat pain, or fatigue, which the researchers noted “likely represent ongoing COVID-19 symptoms.”

COVID-19 was documented as an active diagnosis in 10 percent of patients who had at least one medical visit within the 180 days. Visits for COVID-19 symptoms decreased after 60 days, but some people still reported issues beyond 120 days.

The researchers noted that they did not compare the number of visits among non-hospitalized adults after COVID-19 to adults not diagnosed with COVID-19. They also said three-quarters of the participants were covered by commercial insurance, mostly leaving out uninsured or publicly insured people.

The study comes as the medical community has warned that patients with COVID-19 have reported ongoing health issues in the weeks and months after getting infected.

A similar study published in the journal Nature this week concluded that COVID-19 survivors who were not hospitalized were 60 percent more likely to die than uninfected individuals.: https://thehill.com/policy/healthcar...lized-patients
