The Centre for Covid-19 Situation Administration (CCSA) on Sunday reported 2,438 new cases and 11 deaths, the highest on a single day since the pandemic outbreak.

Of the total, 2,151 people were exposed to the disease while visiting high-risk areas. Proactive testing led to the discovery of 282 cases. Five cases were overseas arrivals in quarantine facilities.

The 11 deaths reported on Sunday comprised eight men and three women. Most of them were overweight, had diabetes, high blood pressure, and hyperlipidemia, authorities said.

One of them was a 25-week pregnant woman, 32, a resident of Bangkok. She reportedly contracted Covid-19 from visiting a crowded area and started to have fever and cough on April 8. The virus was confirmed on April 15. The patient passed away on April 23 at 10.50pm. The cause of death is under investigation.

Meanwhile, 547 patients have recovered and been discharged in the last 24 hours.

As of Sunday, the number of confirmed cases in Thailand had risen to 55,460. Of these, 52,460 had been contracted locally, including 21,660 who were found via proactive testing, while 3,271 were returnees. So far, 31,113 have recovered and been discharged, 24,207 patients are still in hospitals, and 140 have died.: https://www.nationthailand.com/in-focus/40000197

      • Thailand - Police Hospital seeks help after patient transporters infected with COVID-19

Bangkok’s Police General Hospital has asked the Royal Thai Police to send about 90 officers urgently, to help in the transport of patients, after more than 10 patient transporters were found to be contaminated with COVID-19 and many others quarantined.

The hospital will try to get the volunteers to help first. If more help is needed, officers will be selected from each unit.

They will need to be in general good health and not be older than 35 years. They would be vaccinated before starting the job on Monday.: https://www.thaipbsworld.com/police-...with-covid-19/

          • Thailand - Mongkutwattana Hospital to open a field hospital this Wednesday

The Mongkutwattana Hospital, in the Chaengwattana area, will set up a field hospital, on a half hectare plot next to the hospital, to accommodate patients transferred from other medical facilities after the landowner, the Ruchirawong family, consented to the use of the land, said Dr. Rienthong Nanna, the hospital director, in his Facebook post today (Sunday).

He said that the field hospital will be able to accommodate up to 96 severe cases, who need ventilators, and 240 patients with moderate symptoms.

The field hospital is scheduled to open on Wednesday.

He also asked the local administration to relocate the street vendors close to the field hospital.

Mongkutwattana hospital is currently accommodating over 300 COVID-19 patients, 6 of whom are severe cases, and about 250 asymptomatic.: https://www.thaipbsworld.com/mongkut...his-wednesday/

              • Yeah.....India's screwed, even more so than Brazil.. Because of overcrowding, COVID's just going to run its course...however far that will be.

It reminds me of terrorism.....nothing is really achieved in the long run, but many innocent individuals will die and families wrecked or severely affected.

                • Thailand - Calls for lockdown mounting

Calls are mounting for the government to impose a lockdown to restrict people's movement as the number of Covid-19 infections continued to soar.

The calls were made after Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha said on a TV Pool broadcast on Friday that the government had no plan to lock down the country despite it logging more than 2,000 new infections on Saturday.

Eight Covid-19 deaths and a record 2,839 new cases were reported, bringing the total to 129 deaths and 53,022 infections, according to the Centre for Covid-19 Situation Administration. Bangkok logged the highest number of new infections at 1,582 cases.

The Thoracic Society of Thailand called on the government to take drastic action to restrict the movements of people. Nithiphat Chiarakun, president of the society, said the soaring number of infections is straining the public health system as many hospitals, "hospitels" and field hospitals are teetering on the edge.

"Any efforts to overstretch the capacity of medical personnel will lead to the collapse of he public health system,'' he warned. "The government must take decisive action to stop the movement of people as much as possible to isolate infected and at-risk for treatment and reduce the number of new infections,'' Dr Nithiphat said.

The government must give weight to information from the medical profession rather than politicians, he said. Those in the healthcare sector must also make the most use of what capacity they have and try to reduce the number of patients stranded in hospitals and communities, he said.

Calls are also mounting for the government to impose a nationwide lockdown. Benjaporn Tantasuti, a child and adolescent psychiatrist, said that without law enforcement, many Thais cannot control their behaviour during the pandemic. "The situation is worsening and it is now necessary to impose a lockdown and curfew to stifle the surge of infections. The lockdown may be imposed for a brief period to curb the spread of the virus and help ease the burden on the overwhelmed healthcare system,'' she said.

Chaichana Dejdecho, a Democrat Party MP and deputy spokesman, also urged the prime minister to impose a nationwide lockdown for 15 days including restrictions on inter-provincial travel, and a curfew. The government has yet to take action because it is concerned about the economic impact, but the surging infections is now putting a strain on hospitals, Mr Chaichana said.

Deputy Public Health Minister Sathit Pitutecha admitted the latest wave of infections has reached a critical point as there are not enough medical personnel to take care of. In light of this, the ministry has asked the prime minister to tighten measures to curb the transmissions, he said.

Thiravat Hemachudha, director of the Health Science Centre of Emerging Diseases at Chulalongkorn University's faculty of medicine, posted on Facebook that the war against Covid-19 is expected to be a long, drawn-out one.

Commenting on growing calls for a lockdown, he said many infected people are asymptomatic. If a lockdown is imposed, an asymptomatic person who fails to isolate himself from others in a house will spread the disease. When the lockdown is lifted and if those infected people in the house are also asymptomatic, they will spread the virus to many others, Dr Thiravat said.

Gen Prayut said on his Facebook on Saturday he has allowed provincial governors to consider imposing curfews in some areas. Provincial governors have the authority to tighten disease control measures and close premises in addition to any closures ordered by the government. If the pandemic worsens, the 14-day quarantine period for asymptomatic patients treated at hospitals may be reduced to 10 days so they can be self-quarantined at home with a tracking system.

The Thai Retailers Association (TRA) said hours of shopping malls, supermarkets and convenience stores will be shortened further in 18 red-zone provinces including Bangkok.

Starting from Sunday, malls and community malls in the 18 provinces will be open from 11am to 8pm; supermarkets and food courts must close at 9pm, and convenience stores must close from 10pm to 5am. The change will last until May 2.

The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) on Saturday announced 31 types of business venues at risk of Covid-19 infections will come under lockdown for 14 days from tomorrow, according to the Morlab Panda Facebook page. They include cinemas, water parks, boxing stadiums and museums.: https://www.bangkokpost.com/thailand...kdown-mounting

                  • Firms can register for vaccine procurement from today

The Thai Chamber of Commerce and Board of Trade website on Monday opened registration for private companies who wish to procure Covid-19 vaccine at their own expense for their employees.

“The [registration] form will be used to gather information on vaccine requirement from the private sector,” the Thai Chamber of Commerce said.

“Officials will contact you once there is any progress in negotiating with manufacturers to discuss further steps in detail.”

The scheme will allow private companies to vaccinate their staff so that they can restart operations as soon as possible and help speed up recovery of the economy, said the chamber.

“We will coordinate with related government authorities to import vaccine that meets Thai regulations, and at a reasonable price. The distribution of the imported vaccine will be supervised by the Private Hospital Association Thailand.”

The Thai Chamber of Commerce and Board of Trade of Thailand are also looking for private companies who wish to contribute to the procurement and distribution of Covid-19 vaccine in Thailand.

Thailand on Monday logged eight additional Covid-related deaths and 2,048 new cases, bringing the accumulated totals since the start of the pandemic to 148 fatalities and 57,508 confirmed cases.

The Centre for Covid-19 Situation Administration said only 10 of the new cases were imported.

Half of the eight fatalities were registered in Bangkok, it said.

Bangkok logged most new cases at 901, followed by Samut Prakan (110), Chon Buri (104), Nonthaburi (97) and Chiang Mai (84).

The capital is the hotbed of the third outbreak that started early this month with 9,076 accumulated cases, almost three times higher than Chiang Mai, which stayed second.

CCSA assistant spokeswoman Apisamai Srirangson said Bangkok will continue to log more than 500 new cases per day as a result of active mass testing deployed by health authorities.

The imported cases were four recent arrivals from India and one each from the United Arab Emirates, Pakistan, China, Turkey, Hungary and Qatar.: https://www.bangkokpost.com/thailand...-deaths-monday

                      • Nurses in 14-day quarantine after infected patient conceals chronology

Nurses at a hospital in Thailand’s southern province of Nakhon Si Thammarat have had to enter quarantine, after a COVID-19 infected patient allegedly refused to disclose their true chronology.

At least 10 nurses at Maharaj Nakhon Si Thammarat Hospital expressed their frustration, after they had been in close contact with the infected patient, who had recently travelled from high-risk areas.

A provincial public health doctor in Nakhon Si Thammarat, Dr.Charaspong Sukkree, reiterated the importance of disclosing accurate chronologies, as refusal to do so could result in legal action being taken, adding that having 10 nurses in quarantine means that its emergency medicine department will be short staffed.

He also said that all medical personnel have now increased their protection, assuming that all incoming patients are infected with coronavirus.: https://www.thaipbsworld.com/nurses-...ls-chronology/

                        • Massage parlour operators protest yet another closure

A group of massage business owners handed in a petition to Bangkok governor Aswin Kwanmuang on Monday asking for assistance after their businesses were closed for 14 days as of Monday.

The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) has ordered the closure of massage parlours and spas from Monday to May 9, as they are considered to pose a high risk of infection.

Pitak Yotha, one of the representatives, said his business has been closed three times over Covid, but the government has not offered any assistance.

He said massage parlours have never sparked Covid cases but are always the first to be closed.: https://www.nationthailand.com/in-focus/40000236

                            • New Study Shows Measurable Organ Impairment in Long COVID Patients

Long COVID, also referred to as post-COVID-19 syndrome, is yet to be fully understood, but has wide-ranging and fluctuating symptoms, which can include breathlessness, chronic fatigue, “brain fog”, anxiety and stress. The research examined associations between hospitalization, severity of COVID-19 symptoms and multiorgan impairment (in heart, lungs, kidneys, liver, pancreas, spleen), and demonstrated a physiological basis for long COVID. Although the study population were considered to be at low risk of COVID-19 mortality but with ongoing symptoms, seventy percent showed impairment in one or more organs up to four months after initial COVID-19 symptoms.

“Early in the pandemic, research and clinical practice focused on pulmonary effects of COVID-19, but as we scanned patients using Perspectum’s quantitative MRI, we found evidence of multiorgan impairment,” says Dr Amitava Banerjee, Associate Professor in Clinical Data Science and Honorary Consultant Cardiologist, University College London. “Because our research demonstrated physiological effects in a majority of patients, we believe major organ systems must be assessed in all patients recovering from COVID-19 — to help define long COVID, determine its aftereffects and develop multidisciplinary care pathways.”

“There are tremendous implications for healthcare and public health, which have assumed low risk in young people with no comorbidities,” adds Dr Banerjee. “While our research examined patients hospitalized with COVID-19, future research should address longer-term follow-up of organ function beyond symptoms and blood investigations, even in lower risk individuals who were not hospitalized with the disease; and prioritization for imaging, investigation and referral.”

                            About Long COVID

Long COVID affects 10-30% of people who have symptomatic infection with Sars-CoV-2 and is defined as symptomatic disease lasting longer than 12 weeks. Patients typically have extreme fatigue, chest pain, breathlessness, muscle aches and brain fog, but there are many reported symptoms. Many of these patients have organ damage or impairment, and ways of managing this are currently being researched. Patients with Long Covid are often unable to work for long periods of time, posing a significant burden to the economy and public services.: https://www.businesswire.com/news/ho...0426005122/en/

Thailand on Tuesday reported 15 new coronavirus deaths, setting a new daily record for the third time in four days during a growing third wave of infections that has prompted new shutdowns in Bangkok and other areas.

The government also reported 2,179 new coronavirus cases, bringing total confirmed infections to 59,687 with the accumulated death toll now 163.

Taweesilp Visanuyothin, spokesman for the Centre for Covid-19 Situation Administration, said the 15 new fatalities were all Thai nationals – nine men and six women, aged 24-88.

Nine of them died in Bangkok, two in Nakhon Sawan and one each in Chaiyaphum, Phetchaburi, Samut Prakan and Saraburi provinces.

Most of them had chronic diseases including diabetes, renal disease, obstructive pulmonary disease, asthma, heart disease and cancer, Dr Taweesilp said.

Most death cases had come into contact with previously confirmed cases in their families or at their workplaces, or visited high-risk areas such as entertainment venues and markets.

“The times between infection confirmation and death ranged mainly from 1-6 days. One of the deaths came after 16 days,” Dr Taweesilp said.

Of the 2,179 new cases over the past 24 hours, 2,174 were local infections and five were imported.

Bangkok logged 993 new cases, Nonthaburi 149, Pathum Thani and Samut Prakan 93 each, Chon Buri 80, Surat Thani 62, Samut Sakhon 61 (some of them contracted in Bangkok), Chiang Mai 60, Nakhon Ratchasima 33 and Ayutthaya 30.

Out of Thailand’s 77 provinces, seven had at least 50 cases, 25 had at least ten and 52 fewer than ten, Dr Taweesilp said.

The five imported cases were quarantined arrivals from Indonesia (2), Switzerland, India and the United Arab Emirates.

Of the 59,587 total cases, 33,551 (56.21%) recovered including 1,958 discharged over the past 24 hours and 25,973 were at hospitals, including 628 in critical condition and 169 on ventilators.

The third wave of Covid-19 this month has now produced 30,824 cases, including 10,069 in Bangkok, 3,292 in Chiang Mai and 2,043 in Nonthaburi. The death toll this month is now 69.: https://www.bangkokpost.com/thailand...deaths-tuesday

                              • Famed Phitsanulok temple hall closed for 20 days

The majestic vihara, or assembly hall, where the revered Buddha image Phra Phuttha Chinnarat is enshrined at Wat Phra Si Rattana Mahathat in Muang district has been closed for 20 days because of Covid-19 concerns.

The area inside the temple grounds where shops sell souvenirs, lottery tickets and other goods remains open to the public.

The closure of the hall, until May 15, is intended to help stop the third wave of the Covid-19 pandemic, and is on the advice of the provincial public health office.

The assembly hall with the golden image of Phra Phuttha Chinnarat was closed for the first time in April last year, during the first round of the pandemic. It is usually packed with visitors paying respect to the Buddha image.

The public health office announced on Sunday that 12 more Covid-19 infections were found in the province, increasing the tally to 233. Of the total, seven have recovered and 226 are still being treated in hospital.

Like most other provinces, governor Ronnachai Jitwiset has made it compulsory for people in Phitsanulok to wear face masks while outdoors, under threat of a fine of up to 20,000 baht under Section 51 of the Communicable Disease Act for failing to do so.: https://www.bangkokpost.com/thailand...ed-for-20-days
