  • 25 million doses of Johnson & Johnson vaccine ordered for Thailand

A purchase order for 25 million doses of US made Johnson & Johnson vaccine for Thailand has been signed, according to Thai Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha today (Monday).

The prime minister revealed the new development when he visited a vaccination site at Bangkok Youth Centre (Thai-Japan), as Thailand began mass inoculations in many parts of the country today.

25 million doses from Johnson & Johnson, which was approved by Thailand’s Food and Drug Administration (TFDA) in late March, as well as eight million more doses of China’s Sinovac CoronaVac vaccine are expected later this year, to meet the target of 100 million doses, Mr. Prayut said.

The timing of Johnson & Johnson deliveries is not yet specified. Unlike other vaccines which require two doses, Johnson & Johnson comes in single doses.

Six million doses of Sinovac and almost two million of AstraZeneca, 1.8 million of which were locally produced by Siam Bioscience, have been delivered to date. The government has ordered a total of 61 million doses of the AstraZeneca version, to be delivered by December.

On Friday (June 4th), the Disease Control Department said that the Thai government is in talks with representatives of both Johnson & Johnson and Pfizer and that it is seeking 25 million doses from each manufacturer.

The Pfizer vaccine is yet to be approved by TFDA. Last month, Public Health Minister Anutin Charnvirakul said Pfizer representatives agreed to reserve 10-20 million doses of their vaccines for import into Thailand, which is expected to be administered to youths aged 12-18.: https://www.thaipbsworld.com/25-mill...-for-thailand/

      • About 20,000 SMEs close in first quarter of this year due to COVID-19

About 20,000 small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs), mostly in the tourism sector, closed down during the first quarter of this year, due to the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Director of the Office of SMEs Promotion (OSMEP) VeerapongMalai said over the weekend that the closure of the SMEs during the first three months of this year was reflected in the two-to-threefold increase in the number of employees seeking compensation from the Social Security Office following redundancy, compared to the same period last year.

He said that, during the same period, about 23,000 new SMEs had, however, opened for business, mostly via online platforms, adding that exports are steadily picking up, thanks to a gradual economic recovery in developed economies, such as China, the United States and Japan.

Nevertheless, the economic growth rate of the SMEs for the first quarter of this year is projected to contract by up to 4.8%,instead of 2-2.4% as earlier forecast, because of the second wave of COVID-19 infections in December last year, which has substantially impacted the revenues of tourism-related SMEs,such as eateries and hotels.

To help cushion the impacts of the pandemic, Mr. Veerapong said the OSMEP has rolled out the 50:50 stimulus package, with the aim of persuading about 100,000 SMEs to join the government’s procurement scheme.

Meanwhile, Mr. Chonrungsee Chalermchaikit, honorary president of the Federation of Thai SMEs, noted that most SMEs do not have access to financial support, such as soft loans from commercial banks, and they are waiting for the Bank of Thailand to ease restrictions on borrowing.: https://www.thaipbsworld.com/about-2...e-to-covid-19/

            • Indian COVID-19 variant found in 235 people in 10 of Thailand’s provinces

235 people have been infected with the Indian variant of COVID-19, or B.1.617.2, to date, in 10 Thai provinces, with most in Bangkok, according to the Department of Medical Sciences today (Monday).

206 cases were found in the capital, followed by 17 in Udon Thani, 2 each in Nonthaburi, Phitsanulok, Saraburi, Nakhon Ratchasima, and 1 each in Roi Et, Samut Songkhram, Ubon Ratchathani and Buriram provinces.

Of the 3,964 infection samples tested by the department so far, most are the UK variant, or B.1.1.7, while 235, or 6%, are the Indian variant.

According to Department Director-General Dr. Supakit Sirilak, the variants of concern include Alpha (UK variant), Beta (South African variant), Gamma (Brazilian variant), and Delta (Indian variant).

Thailand first detected the Indian variant on May 10th, in a Thai woman and her 4-year-old son who had returned to Thailand from Pakistan. 11 days later, 15 construction workers in Bangkok’s Laksi district were found with the strain, before it spread to other parts of the country.

Most of the new Indian variant cases found are connected to the Laksi cluster, Dr. Supakit added.: https://www.thaipbsworld.com/indian-...nds-provinces/

              • Only about one-third of Bangkok’s markets pass DDC’s safety standards: BMA

Only 97 out of 274 markets recently inspected by the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) pass the safety standards stipulated by Department of Disease Control (DDC), the BMA said on Sunday.

The city is planning to inspect all 486 markets in its areas in a bid to contain the spread of Covid-19, as fresh markets are often the source of cluster cases.

The BMA reported that the reasons why many markets failed the inspection were:

▪︎ 4 per cent have no proper ventilation system.

▪︎ 20 per cent have no check-in and checkout platforms (Thai Chana or Mor Chana) to trace the visitors.

▪︎ 18 per cent have no screening checkpoints at entrance/exit.

▪︎ 7 per cent have no measures to limit the number of customers.

▪︎ 24 per cent fail to enforce social distancing measures.

                ▪︎ 8 per cent lack hand-washing stations.

▪︎ 7 per cent fail to adhere to mandatory face mask rule.

▪︎ 9 per cent fail cleaning standards.

▪︎ 3 per cent fail to keep record of merchants and employees.

The BMA urged all markets to strictly follow measures prescribed by the DDC for the safety of merchants, customers and nearby communities.: https://www.nationthailand.com/in-focus/40001749

People living in Phetchabun’s Khao Kho district are calling on authorities to take action against a gang of big bikers, who have been riding around violating traffic rules and Covid-19 measures.

Recently, a video clip of the bikers riding down Khao Kho roads on one wheel was shared online, drawing angry comments from locals.

On Monday, provincial governor Krit Kongmuang said the bikers had come from Prachinburi province. He added that five of them have been identified and summoned to face legal action.

Phetchabun authorities have also ordered the closure of all resorts and camping areas, as tourists have been showing up in violation of the Covid-19 containment measures.: https://www.nationthailand.com/in-focus/40001800

                    • Factory workers to get Sinopharm

The state-private partnership expects to start distributing Chinese-made Sinopharm vaccines to factory workers in five industrial estates and a deep-sea port in Map Ta Phut on July 9, with a target of 1,000 vaccines administered per day.

The inoculation will be carried out for workers at WHA Eastern Industrial Estate (Map Ta Phut), Map Ta Phut Industrial Estate, Padaeng Industrial Estate, RIL Industrial Estate, Asia Industrial Estate and Map Ta Phut deep-sea port in Rayong.

Industry Minister Suriya Jungrungreangkit said vaccine distribution in industrial complexes is crucial because workers in the manufacturing sector are important to help drive supply chains and the economy.

"It's great that factory workers can receive vaccines faster. This is good for Thai industry," he said.

The government, which started mass vaccinations on Monday, aims to distribute 500,000 doses a day in order to achieve herd community.

The Industrial Estate Authority of Thailand (IEAT) is working with the Federation of Thai Industries (FTI) to speed up the administration of Covid-19 jabs to workers in industrial estates.

FTI vice-chairman Kriengkrai Thiennukul said earlier that the federation wanted a total of 1 million doses, however, it signed a memorandum of understanding with Chulabhorn Royal Academy to receive 300,000 doses.

The academy announced that it had procured Sinopharm as an alternative vaccine in addition to two main vaccines -- UK-developed AstraZeneca and China's Sinovac -- in the government's national vaccination scheme.

Each Sinopharm dose is estimated to cost 1,000 baht with each employee requiring two doses.

The companies want to vaccinate their employees as a worker benefit, Mr Kriengkrai said.

FTI is focusing on distributing Sinopharm vaccines following concerns about a vaccine shortage under the state vaccination scheme. The vaccines are expected to be imported into Thailand between June 15 and June 20.

"IEAT will use the first floor of its Map Ta Phut Industrial Estate office as a vaccination venue," said IEAT governor Veeris Ammarapala.

The office is a good location as it is near Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn Memorial Hospital.

The vaccinations will run from 8am to 6pm, said Mr Veeris.

So far 25,000 workers have registered to receive the vaccine through IEAT.: https://www.bangkokpost.com/business...-get-sinopharm

                      • 10 arrested for breaching alcohol ban

A restaurateur and his customers in Hat Yai district have been held for violating the provincial Covid-19 ban on liquor consumption.

Hat Yai district chief Chawakit Suwankhiri took action immediately after receiving a complaint late Monday night that people were having a party and drinking at Khrua Pattakhan Ban Thung restaurant on Rattana Uthit Road.

Ten people were held, including restaurant owner Sopha Sutthisan. Liquor bottles, beer and a receipt of 1,260 baht were found at the place.

Since records showed local officials had already warned the operator about the ban three times, they decided to take legal action against her this time.

                        • Caution issued for ice consumption following COVID-19 infections at ice factories

Following the reported emergence of clusters of COVID-19 infections at ice factories in Samut Prakan and Chon Buri provinces, the Health Department is advising consumers to choose ice cubes which are properly packed, sealed and with good manufacturing practice (GMP) certification.

Director-General of the Health Department Dr. Suwanchai Wattanayingcharoenchai said today that the reported clusters may concern consumers, regarding the safety of ice cubes or crushed ice, which they usually buy from convenience stores for putting in dessert, drinks or for preserving fresh produce.

He said that cubed or crushed ice, which are not properly packed and sealed, can be contaminated, if the production process is not clean or up to the required GMP standard.

For their safety, he suggested consumers buy ice which is packed and sealed properly or which is certified by the Food and Drug Administration.

For ice factories, Dr. Suwanchai said the department has sought cooperation from their management in tightening up their quality controls, by screening their workers on daily basis, making sure they are safe and easing congestion in their workplaces.

Regular hand washing with disinfectants and the wearing of clean shoes by workers during the manufacturing process is necessary, he said, adding that ice should not be put on the floor and the production line must be regularly disinfected.

For the use of crushed ice in fresh food preservation, he suggested vendors put the ice in plastic bags, to avoid direct contact between the ice and the food.

81 workers at a factory in Samut Prakan tested positive for COVID-19 last week, while 57 others at a Chon Buri factory also got the coronavirus.: https://www.thaipbsworld.com/caution...ice-factories/

                          • Study Shows Mask-Wearing Halves Risk Of Getting Covid

People who wore masks were less likely to get sick

COVID-19 positivity rate is lowest among those who always wore a mask

Turns out that wearing a mask and social distancing really weren't a waste of time.

Driving the news: Exclusive polling data from our Axios-Ipsos Coronavirus Index, which started in March 2020, shows that the respondents who reported never wearing masks were twice as likely to test positive for COVID as those who said they wore masks all the time.

By the numbers: Just 11% of people who reported always wearing masks outside the home tested positive for COVID — compared to 23% of those who said they never wore masks.
                            • That's even though people who wore masks all the time got tested more regularly than those who didn't.
                            • 30% of people who wore masks at all times reported getting tested for COVID, compared to 23% who wore masks sometimes, 20% of those who wore them occasionally but not often and 12% of those who never wore them.

Between the lines: When a group of people is getting tested less often than others, but has a higher positive rate, there's a good chance that there are other sick people who are being missed.

The pattern was similar for social distancing. Just 10% of people who said they kept a six-foot distance from other people at all times tested positive for COVID, compared to 26% of people who said they never did.
                            • 12% of people who said they sometimes kept a six-foot distance tested positive, as did 20% of those who said they social distanced occasionally but not often.
                            • There was less variation in testing rates in this group: 26% of people who always social distanced got tested for COVID, compared to 27% of people who did so sometimes, 28% of those who did so occasionally but not often, and 23% of those who never did.

                              • Royal academy ready to sell Sinopharm to state, private agencies

The Chulabhorn Royal Academy has set the price of the first dose of Sinopharm vaccine at 888 baht and is willing to allocate batches for state and private agencies under some conditions.

Dr Nithi Mahanonda, the academy’s secretary-general, announced on Facebook this morning that this rate covers transportation, storage and insurance for side effects.

However, it does not cover the jab administration fees charged by hospitals.

He also said the academy will allocate vaccines for government and private agencies, based on how important they are to the national economy and society.

Nithi also said that all staff, including foreigners, working for these agencies have the right to be inoculated. He also warned that agencies will be fined 15 times the cost of the dose if they are found to have charged their staff for the shot.

The agencies are also required to donate 10 per cent of their vaccine allocation to people in need. Details of this requirement will be announced later.

To get their allocation, agencies must contact hospitals linked to the academy.: https://www.nationthailand.com/in-focus/40001835
