  • Delta variant overtakes Alpha strain in Thailand

The rapidly spreading Delta variant of COVID-19 has already overtaken the Alpha variant as the dominant strain in Thailand, with Delta accounting for 62.6% of 3,340 samples examined by the Medical Sciences Department, compared to 34.1% of Alpha cases.

The department’s director-general, Dr. Supakit Sirilak, told the media today (Monday) that, of Thailand’s 77 provinces, the Delta variant has been found in 71.

He expressed concern that the surge of infections by the Delta variant, which is easily transmissible, also heightens the risk of virus mutations, citing last week’s discovery of seven cases who were simultaneously infected with the Delta and Alpha strains but, fortunately, the viruses have not yet mutated.

Dr. Supakit said, however, that mutations of viruses are occurring all the time and most of them are not a matter of concern, unless the mutations cause the virus to be more easily transmissible or more resistant to vaccines.

As for the Beta variant, which was first detected in southern provinces, he said that 91 additional cases were found in Narathiwat province last week, as more cases were also found in the neighboring provinces of Pattani, Yala, Songkhla and Phatthalung, and up to Chumphon province.

One case was found in the northeastern province of Bueng Kan, in a worker returning from Taiwan, with three family members put on high-risk watch. In Bangkok, one case was reported last week, believed to have been infected by a relative arriving from Narathiwat province.: https://www.thaipbsworld.com/delta-v...n-in-thailand/

Tests, conducted in communities between May 27th and July 18th, found 194 people, out of 12,222, or 1.3% tested positive for coronavirus.
Tests, conducted between June 9th and July 18th in markets, found 365 out of 18,952, or 1.93% infected.

Contract signed for Thailand’s 20 million doses of Pfizer vaccine, delivery in Q4 this year

Thailand’s purchase contract for 20 million doses of Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine has been signed, with delivery expected in the fourth quarter of this year, according to Pfizer and BioNTech today (Tuesday).

Without revealing the prices or exact delivery schedule, both Pfizer and BioNTech said in a press statement that a contract has been signed with Thailand’s Disease Control Department under the Ministry of Public Health.

“We are thrilled to have signed this important agreement with the Government of the Kingdom of Thailand as part of our shared commitment to be part of the country’s efforts to drive down COVID-19 infections,” said Deborah Seifert, Country Manager of Pfizer (Thailand) Ltd. and Indochina.

“I would like to thank the Government of the Kingdom of Thailand for its support and for putting trust in our ability to develop a vaccine that, we believe, has the potential to help address this global pandemic threat. Our goal remains to deliver a global supply of a well-tolerated and effective COVID-19 vaccine for many people around the world, as quickly as we can,” said Sean Marett, Chief Business and Chief Commercial Officer at BioNTech.

Pfizer and BioNTech aim to manufacture approximately 3 billion doses of their COVID-19 vaccine globally by the end of 2021. It is one of the two current mRNA vaccines, the other being US-made Moderna. Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine was approved for emergency use by Thailand’s Food and Drug Administration on June 24th.

Thailand does not yet have any mRNA vaccines in use, with only Sinovac and Sinopharm from China, both are whole virus vaccines, and AstraZeneca, a vector vaccine, being provided.

Public Health Minister Anutin Charnvirakul and other key health officials will meet representatives from six vaccine brands this afternoon to discuss importing more vaccines, including 50 million more Pfizer doses, separate from the newly signed agreement. Others are Sinovac, AstraZeneca, Moderna, Johnson & Johnson and Sinopharm.: https://www.thaipbsworld.com/contrac...-q4-this-year/

SAMUT SAKHON: Another 814 coronavirus infections were reported in Samut Sakhon on Tuesday as the Covid-19 outbreak continued unabated.

With Samut Sakhon one of the 13 provinces declared dark-red zones of maximum and strict Covid-19 control, 27 kinds of at-risk businesses have now been ordered to shut their doors and restrictions placed on other commercial outlets.

The figures are more recent than the 798 cases reported in the national daily update.

Large hardware stores, similar to shopping malls, were also included.

Convenience stores must close from 8pm-4am. Wet markets, flea markets, floating markets, walking streets and similar places are allowed to open six hours a day but operators must get permission from their local administrative organisation, which will also set the hours.

Construction work and the movements of workers were also prohibited under the order.

The governor also signed an order setting up two more field hospitals, in Muang and Krathum Baen districts.: https://www.bangkokpost.com/thailand...in-covid-cases

                    • State of emergency extended for 2 months amid dire warning from Health Ministry

The Cabinet extended the nationwide state of emergency for another two months until September 30, government spokesman Traisulee Traisoranakul said on Tuesday.

The emergency was extended to tackle surging Covid-19 infections, with 288,643 cases reported between April 1 and July 9.

The epidemic is centred on Bangkok and surrounding provinces, where the caseload is now rising by thousands each day with dozens of fatalities every 24 hours. Bangkok logged 2,764 new cases and 41 deaths on Tuesday. Greater Bangkok, which includes surrounding provinces, recorded 5,468 new cases.

The Public Health Ministry warned that unless tighter restrictions are imposed, the current daily caseload of more than 10,000 new infections would generate more than 100,000 new cases over the next two weeks. This would bring the public health system to the point of collapse, it said. The state of emergency allows authorities to impose special measures to control the spread of Covid-19.: https://www.nationthailand.com/in-focus/40003513

                      • Aid payout clarified for workers impacted by virus

The Social Security Office (SSO) on Tuesday clarified the latest aid payouts to workers affected by Covid-19, apparently to dispel confusion over eligibility and compensation amounts.

A payout is being offered to ease the financial burden on workers left struggling following the tightened lockdown and curfew announced last week.

Details about the aid money, however, have confused some people who have contacted the SSO to clarify matters.

SSO spokesman, Nanthachai Panyasurarit, said on Tuesday that the payout is split into two portions. Workers insured under Section 33 of the SSO law, who are mainly those working in offices, will either receive one or both portions.

The two portions come from assistance money worth 2,500 baht provided by the government and compensation not exceeding 7,500 baht from the SSO.

Workers can log on to the SSO’s website at to check if they are eligible for the 2,500-baht assistance money. This check can be done by keying in their Thai citizenship ID card number.

The money is remitted to a recipient’s bank account linked with the PromptPay electronic banking service by citizenship ID number.

Only Thai nationals working in companies determined by the government as having been impacted by the pandemic in the 13 hardest-hit provinces qualify to get the 2,500-baht assistance money.

People can check their eligibility throughout this month. The SSO has listed nine jom categories directly impacted by Covid-19 although more are being added. This might explain why some people ran checks only to find they were not eligible.

The SSO spokesman said the other portion, worth up to 7,500 baht, is being offered as compensation to employees of businesses that have suspended operations or closed as a result of the Covid-19 containment measures.

Those who qualify for the compensation must have contributed to the SSF for at least six months within the past 15 months. How much they contributed decides how much they will get, although the maximum amount is capped at 7,500 baht.

If employers have not suspended or closed down a business, employees will not receive any compensation but can still pick up the 2,500-baht payout from the government.

The compensation money will be given for three months while the 2,500-baht payout is a one-off payment, Mr Nanthachai said.: https://www.bangkokpost.com/thailand...acted-by-virus

                            • Cabinet okays THB10.98 billion more for employers, workers

The cabinet on Tuesday approved an additional budget of THB10.98 billion for both employers and employees under Section 33 of the Social Security Act who have been affected by the lockdown of 13 provinces in the maximum control zone (dark red zone), government spokesman Anucha Burapachaisri said.

“This will be added to the previously approved THB2.51 billion in aid, which makes it an overall budget of approximately THB13.50 billion,” Anucha said.

The measure was proposed by the Labour Ministry, aiming to compensate employers and workers who have been affected by the government’s 14-day lockdown that commenced on July 12 in a bid to curb Covid-19 from spreading in ten high-risk provinces – Bangkok, Nakhon Pathom, Nonthaburi, Pathum Thani, Samut Prakan, Samut Sakhon, Yala, Pattani, Narathiwat and Songkhla.

Ayutthaya, Chachoengsao and Chonburi were added to the list on July 18.

The aid is limited to those in nine sectors: construction; accommodation and food services; arts, entertainment and recreational activities; other services as stated by the Social Security Office; transportation and warehouses; wholesale and retail businesses; administration and services support; science and academic activities; and information and communications.: https://www.nationthailand.com/in-focus/40003535

More field hospitals and community isolation programs are being set up in Pathum Thani, to help accommodate the rising number of COVID-19 patients, as many field hospitals in the province are reportedly full, especially with patients from the cluster at “Talaad Thai”, Thailand’s largest fruit and vegetable market.

There are currently 10 field hospitals across four districts in Pathum Thani, with a combined total of 3,588 beds. One of them has been closed temporarily. Another was opened on Monday, with a 400 bed capacity, but it is expected that it will be full in a few months.

A new facility in Lum Luk Ka district was opened yesterday and yet another, in Khlong Luang district, is expected to open soon as a comprehensive centre with semi-ICU facilities and a virus laboratory.

Home and community isolation programs are being set up for “green” or asymptomatic and mild cases, with a plan for community programs in every district of the province. Many field hospitals are reportedly taking more “yellow” cases, or those with moderate symptoms.

Dr. Apichon Jeensawek, deputy chief of the Pathum Thani health office, said that the deteriorating situation has led to a shortage of medical staff, as some of the nurses from health centres were asked to help in other areas. The Ruam Jai Rak field hospital, for example, now has only 5 or 6 medics, which means more nurses from private hospitals and health volunteers are required.

Pathum Thani is among the 13 Dark Red “maximum controlled and restricted” zones, with high numbers of daily new infections. 476 new COVID-19 infections and two more deaths have been recorded in the province today, raising its total, since April 2021, to 15,818.

Currently, there are 300-400 patients being admitted daily, while government hospitals can accommodate 488 patients and Thammasat University Hospital can accommodate 76. Most of the hospitals are now full.: https://www.thaipbsworld.com/more-fi...-pathum-thani/
