  • Thailand - Infections on upward curve, warns DDC

The number of new Covid-19 infections is on a steep upward curve, doubling or tripling weekly, a Department of Disease Control (DDC) official said on Saturday.

While the infection rate in Bangkok is beginning to level off, cases in the provinces are rising sharply, said Taweesap Siraprapasiri, a senior official with the DDC.

The number of new cases in Bangkok remains high yet the rise has begun to slow down, apparently as a result of measures being implemented to control the spread of the outbreak, he said.

The country had a record high of 15,335 new Covid-19 cases and 129 new fatalities over the past 24 hours, the Public Health Ministry reported on Sunday morning.

Dr Taweesap said the average number of deaths per day has risen from less than 50 to more than 100 in line with the rise in number of new infections over the past month.: https://www.bangkokpost.com/thailand...urve-warns-ddc

A nurse in Bangkok died on Friday after reportedly getting infected with Covid-19 in her workplace.

The nurse, Praepach Thanyawattaweesook, worked at a Covid-19 testing site at Kasemrad Hospital Bang Khae.

            • Poultry plant in Thailand’s Phetchabun closed after 1,600 workers infected with COVID-19

A frozen poultry processing factory in Thailand’s northern province of Phetchabun has been closed down after more than 1,600, of the 7,200, were found to be infected with COVID-19 during active screening yesterday (Friday).

Phetchabun Governor Krit Kongmuang said today that active screening is still under way today and it is expected that up to half of the total workforce of 7,200 may be infected.

He said he has ordered the immediate closure of the Golden Line Business plant, an affiliate of Saha Farms Company, one of Thailand’s largest frozen poultry exporters, located in Kanchu sub-district of Bung Sampan district.

The management of the company was also ordered to set up a field hospital in the compound of the factory, with accommodation for 2,000 people and room for expansion.

People living around the factory, in the villages of Ban Nong Plong, Ban Lam Takhro and Ban Lam Takhro Nua, have been ordered not to leave their communities, unless it is necessary, until August 6th.

Police, military personnel and local officials have been deployed to all access points to and from the factory, to prevent workers from leaving and others from entering.: https://www.thaipbsworld.com/poultry...with-covid-19/

              • Eight Covid-related hotline numbers made toll free

The Ministry of Digital Economy and Society (DES) announced on Saturday that Covid-19-related hotline numbers will be toll-free from Sunday following complaints from netizens.

DES Minister Chaiwut Thanakamanusorn said the following hotline numbers could be called free of charge: 1330, 1323, 1422, 1442, 1646, 1668, 1669 and 1506.

On Friday, a Facebook user (whose account was not revealed) had posted that his student had called the bed-finding hotline 1669, arranged by the Department of Medical Services, until the phone credit ran out.

“I doubted if it could be true, so I asked mobile service providers. Their answer was 'this line is not toll-free'. It costs THB1.50 per minute. Operator DTAC subtracts the minutes from the package first. The surplus charge will be per minute then. There is no information from other providers yet,” his FB post read.

The post added that the hotline of the National Health Security Office was also not toll-free.: https://www.nationthailand.com/in-focus/40003718

                • Covid-infected body of man, 80, found near Victory Monument

An 80-year-old homeless man infected with Covid-19 was found dead on a Bangkok street on Saturday morning.

The corpse was found lying beside a seat near Victory Monument at 7.30am.

Local vendors were the first to spot the body before contacting officials.

Initially, the cause of death was unknown until medics from Ramathibodi Hospital, arrived at the scene along with rescue staff and tested the dead man with a Covid-19 rapid-test kit.

Preliminary autopsy showed that there was no injury on the man’s body. Among his belongings were medicines for hypertension and diabetes.

The corpse was later sent to Ramathibodi Hospital for further examination.

A police officer stationed at the scene told the press that the dead person had been resting near the seat since the previous night.: https://www.nationthailand.com/in-focus/40003716

                  • Temples in Thailand offering free cremation services for COVID-19 victims

Over 590 temples throughout Thailand are offering free cremation services for those who die from COVID-19, as the national death toll steadily rises, said Prime Minister’s Office Minister Anucha Nakasai today (Sunday).

These include 62 temples in Bangkok, 124 temples in and around the capital and 407 in the rest of the country.

Many temples in and around the capital are currently overwhelmed with cadavers waiting to be cremated and some crematoria have broken down or collapsed due to overheating.

Mr. Anucha said that several temples have offered space in their grounds for conversion into field hospitals or pre-admission facilities, to accommodate the infected before they are sent to general hospitals if their condition worsens.

118 such facilities on temple grounds are now ready to open.

The minister also said that the National Office of Buddhism has been instructed to supply these temples with protective PPE suits and disinfectants and to arrange for the vaccination of monks, undertakers and other temple staff.: https://www.thaipbsworld.com/temples...id-19-victims/

                    • The Public Health Ministry said no less than 500,000 doses of Pfizer's Covid-19 vaccine donated by the United States will be allocated to frontline health workers, before insisting no VIPs will be allowed to bypass the system to acquire the jabs.

A spokesman for the ministry, Rungrueng Kijphati, on Sunday dismissed rumours which claimed that only 200,000 doses out of the 1.5 million Pfizer jabs donated by the US will be distributed to frontline medical workers.

While most of Thailand's estimated 700,000 frontline health workers have received two Covid-19 jabs by Sinovac, many aren't confident in the vaccine's efficacy against the Delta variant, first detected in India and which is currently dominating Thailand.

Doubts surrounding the government's plan over the donated doses emerged after a cardiologist with Chiang Mai University's Faculty of Medicine questioned the allocation of the vaccine.

On Facebook, Rungsrit Kanjanavanit claimed to have learned during a meeting that the government is planning to allocate only 200,000 out of the 1.5 million doses donated by the United States for frontline medical personnel.

Dr Rungsrit said the government initially promised to give 700,000 doses to healthcare workers; but the quota was later lowered to 500,000, before it was ultimately dropped to 200,000.

"As a cardiologist with a moderate risk of contracting the virus, I'm not planning on getting a booster shot just yet.

"I can live with this low immunity [from the two shots of Sinovac] and will wait until there are enough vaccine supplies for all," he said.: https://www.bangkokpost.com/thailand...bs-for-workers

                      • Infected urged to use free transit scheme

Anyone infected with Covid-19 who wants to be treated in their hometown should contact the National Health Security Office (NHSO) to claim free, isolated seats on transport services, says the Ministry of Public Health.

The services are being offered by the government, after at least 31,175 infected people left the capital during the lockdown. It is also seen as a way of alleviating pressure on city hospital beds.

Thongchai Kiratihatthayakon, the ministry's deputy permanent secretary, said the government supports those who wish to make the trip but must ensure they do so safely without infecting others.

Only those with mild symptoms can use the service, and they must first contact the NHSO's hotline 1330 or download its QR Code to reserve their spot, he said, adding that most people are able to travel within three days of registering.

"We want infected people who want to go home to register with the NHSO so they come under our medical surveillance and treatment system and can be monitored during home isolation," he said.

He added that since the capital's lockdown last Monday, around 500,000 people had departed the city, with 31,175 provincial returnees testing positive so far.

According to the ministry, 70.3% were diagnosed with mild infections, followed by 21.9% with moderate symptoms and 7.7% in need of critical care.

There are about eight million people living in the capital, of whom 2.4 million are workers from the other provinces, mainly those in the Northeast.

Attaporn Limpanyalert, deputy secretary general of National Health Security Office, said the office has been working with the ministry, including agencies such as the Ministry of Transport and the Ministry of Defence to provide the free transport. The office submits requests to the Ministry of Public Health every day.

The healthcare office is covering the cost of each trip to a maximum of 3,700 baht and has already taken 1,000 people infected with Covid-19 home.

The service provides door-to-door care with patients being escorted by bus, train and even plane back to their home provinces, according to Mr Attaporn.

Meanwhile, cabinet members have been asked to oversee the transport of patients back to home.

For example, Anutin Charnvirakul and other members of the Bhumjaithai Party are responsible for the lower northeastern region, including Buriram where it has strong support

Interior minister Anupong Paochinda is in charge of Petchaburi and Ratchaburi; and Satit Pitutacha, deputy public health minister, is overseeing transport services to Rayong.: https://www.bangkokpost.com/thailand...transit-scheme

                        • Expats aged 60 and above can get their jab at Bang Sue Grand Station

Foreign expats aged 60 and above can now register for their Covid-19 jab, Foreign Ministry spokesperson Tanee Sangrat said while visiting the inoculation centre at Bang Sue Grand Station on Sunday.

On Tuesday, the Foreign Ministry announced that foreigners born in or before 1961 can register for a jab via https://forms.gle/ULAqvx8eiDoX3v5Q9.

Those living in Bangkok, Nakhon Pathom, Nonthaburi, Pathum Thani, Samut Prakan and Samut Sakhon are eligible. They will get their shot at the Bang Sue Grand Station.

Foreigners aged 75 and above can also walk in to register and get a jab between 9am and 4pm daily. However, the number of walk-ins serviced will be limited initially.

“We expect to set up appointments for 200 to 300 foreigners per day,” Tanee said. “And soon we will expand the pre-registration service for other groups of foreigners.”

He added that Public Health Minister Anutin Charvirakul also visited the centre on Sunday and urged relevant agencies to start vaccinating foreign residents. Anutin said this was in line with the government’s policy to inoculate as many people as possible to contain the spread of Covid-19.

“The minister also met expats who had arrived to get their jab, many of whom were grateful for being given one,” Tanee said.

As of Sunday, 2,368 foreigners have been vaccinated at Bang Sue Grand Station, of which 1,516 had registered online and 852 were walk-ins.: https://www.nationthailand.com/in-focus/40003770
