Do you have a reference for that casualty number? I’d read that was at least 500,000.

            • COVID infections in 4 southern provinces rising, now 21% of new cases Monday

Thailand’s 5 southernmost provinces, of Nakhon Si Thammarat, Songkhla, Yala, Pattani and Narathiwat, are among those with the highest COVID-19 infection rate today (Monday).

The combined cases in the four provinces except Nakhon Si Thammarat accounted for 21% of all new cases reported in the last 24 hours, up from 17% last week, according to the Centre for COVID-10 Situation Administration (CCSA).

The ten provinces with the highest infection rates today are Bangkok (1,137), Yala (764), Chon Buri (594), Songkhla (484), Pattani (406), Samut Prakan (382), Narathiwat (314), Nakhon Si Thammarat (313), Ratchaburi (300) and Rayong (297), said CCSA Assistant Spokesperson Dr. Apisamai Srirangsan.

The bigger proportion of cases in the southern region goes against the decline in infections in the capital, which has dropped substantially from over 4,000 cases a day in August.

Noting that infections among family members are increasing, Dr. Apisamai suggested that the communicable disease committee in each province tighten up measures to contain intra-family infection.

She also said she had received a report about several eateries, in Hat Yai district of Songkhla province, operating during curfew hours and selling alcohol drinks in plastic glasses to their customers.

9,930 new infections were recorded in the past 24 hours. These include 9,561 locally acquired cases, 362 among prisoners and seven foreign arrivals. 12,336 patients have recovered and been discharged from hospitals. 109,748 cases are still undergoing treatment, including 3,071 severe cases, of whom 719 are on ventilators. 97 deaths were recorded.: https://www.thaipbsworld.com/covid-i...-cases-monday/

              • Moderna shipment ‘delayed by just 10 days’

In a bid to allay public fears, the Private Hospital Association said on Tuesday that the delivery of the first batch of Moderna vaccines had only been delayed by 10 days.

On Friday, importer Zuellig Pharma said the delivery of the first batch of 1.9 million Moderna doses had been pushed back by a month.

The association’s president Chalerm Harnpanich said all pressure is being placed on Zuellig Pharma to deliver 2 million doses of the vaccine within the fourth quarter of this year.

Of this batch, 40 per cent has been earmarked for people who have booked a shot.

He also said people who want a booster right away can opt for another brand this month and hold off on getting their Moderna booster by another three months. He said this batch can be stored for seven months.

The Moderna vaccine, developed using mRNA technology, is believed to be effective against the Delta variant of Covid-19. However, Chalerm warned that no vaccines available can protect recipients from the virus 100 per cent. Hence, he said, people should not be careless and practice all protection measures.: https://www.nationthailand.com/in-focus/40007056

                  • Thailand to buy AstraZeneca vaccine from Hungary

The cabinet on Tuesday approved the Ministry of Public Health's proposal to buy 400,000 doses of AstraZeneca's Covid-19 vaccine from Hungary and to accept donations of 100,000 doses of Pfizer vaccine from Iceland and 346,000 doses of AstraZeneca from Germany.

Spokesman Thanakorn Wangboonkongchana said the Department of Disease Control willbe the Thai signatory of a bilateral agreement with Hungary for the purchase of 400,000 doses of the AstraZeneca vaccine.

The agreement overs the transport of the vaccine, ownership and risks, secrecy, laws for the handling of disputes and indirect taxes/VAT.

The Department of Disease Control is also empowered to sign a tripartite agreement between Thailand, Hungary and AstraZeneca regarding indirect taxes/VAT, the delivery of the vaccine and and laws for the implementation of the agreement.

The spokesman said the purchase of the additonal vaccine is part of the plan to complete the acquisition of 126.2 million doses of Covid vaccine. The government is confident at least 70% of people in target groups will be inoculated by December this year.

The cabinet also acknowledged Iceland's wish to donate 100,000 doses of Pfizer vaccine and Germany's intention to donate 346,100 doses of AstraZeneca vaccine to Thailand.

Public Health Minister Anutin Charnvirakul will sign the donation and delivery agreements with the two countries.

Iceland and Germany are expected to deliver the vaccine in October, Mr Thanakorn said.: https://www.bangkokpost.com/thailand...e-from-hungary

                          • Thailand negotiating purchase of special Covid pill

The Public Health Ministry is negotiating the purchase of 200,000 courses of the experimental antiviral drug Molnupiravir with US drugmaker Merck & Co.

“The ministry expects the drug to be registered under the Thai Food and Drug Administration [FDA] by November and the first batch of Molnupiravir to be delivered to Thailand by late next month or early December,” Medical Services Department chief Dr Somsak Ankasil said on Tuesday.

“We cannot reveal the price at the moment due to contract restrictions,” he said. “This contract will only be valid once Molnupiravir is approved by the US FDA, which should be soon.”

Molnupiravir is among several anti-coronavirus drugs currently undergoing Phase 2 and 3 trials overseas. Results of the Phase 3 trial for Molnupiravir – the first antiviral drug specifically developed to fight Covid-19 – are expected by the end of October.

If the drug proves to be effective, it will be used in place of Favipiravir. Both drugs act in the same way – stopping the Covid-19 virus from entering the body’s cells. Patients with mild symptoms will be given 40 tablets of Molnupiravir to take over five days.: https://www.nationthailand.com/in-focus/40007072

                              • Thailand to import 200,000 courses of Molnupiravir anti-viral drug from USA

The Ministry of Public Health is to seek approval from the Thai cabinet for the procurement of 200,000 courses of the Molnupiravir oral anti-viral medicine, using money from the Central Fund, said Deputy Government Spokesperson Rachada Dhnadirek.

Jointly developed by Merck and Ridgeback Biotherapeutics of the United States, Molnupiravir has proven to be effective in significantly reducing the risk of hospitalisation or death from COVID-19 infection during Third Phase human trials. The companies are seeking approval from the US Food and Drug Administration for emergency use.

Citing information from the Rural Doctor Society, Dr. Rachada said the orally-administered drug was developed from medicine used to treat flu, after studies showed that it is efficacious in inhibiting several types of coronavirus, including COVID-19, adding that the medicine is Third Phase human trials in the United States.

She expects the drug will be imported into Thailand starting in December, if it passes the US and Thai FDAs.

Dr. Ratchada noted, however, that the best way to curb the spread of COVID-19 is vaccination and self-protection by observing the “new normal” lifestyle.: https://www.thaipbsworld.com/thailan...drug-from-usa/
