      • Thai Rural Doctors Society claims COVID-19 infections are rising, not falling

The Rural Doctors Society (RDS) has warned Thai people not to lower their guard, noting that COVID-19 infections in Thailand are not declining, as widely misunderstood. On the contrary, are increasing, averaging over 20,000 cases a day.

In its Facebook post today (Sunday), the RDS says “please pay attention and be on the alert” as it pointed out at the Centre for COVID-19 Situation Administration (CCSA) has shown two figures for new infections today, from different testing methods – 10,817 cases from RT-PCR tests and 10,055 cases from antigen tests.

Actual infections today from the two test results should have been more than 20,000 cases, said the RDS.

In today’s news briefing, however, the CCSA announced today’s infections at 10,817.

Pointing to the 3,000 severe cases recorded today, the RDS said that the growth in severe cases has not slowed, clearly indicating the daily infections in Thailand should have been about 30,000 cases and the figures should increase if more people in high-risk zones are tested.

COVID-19 infections are on the rise, especially in the “red zones”, said the RDS, and it noted that the Ministry of Interior and local administration organizations are showing signs of fatigue and complacency, whereas politicians are more concerned with preparing for elections.

The Ministry of Public Health cannot, however, afford to be complacent, otherwise, more new clusters will pop up “like mushrooms,” said the RDS, as it predicted that the graph of new infections will rise steeply next week.: https://www.thaipbsworld.com/thai-ru...g-not-falling/

        • Safari World reopens under Covid-19 restrictions

“Safari World” tourist attraction in Bangkok reopened to visitors on Saturday (October 9) after more than six months of shutting down due to Covid-19 situation.

“The park has employed Covid-19 preventive measures to ensure the safety of all visitors,” said Rit Kiewrucha, managing director of Safari World Plc. “We have installed thermal scanners and alcohol hand sanitizers at entrances of each zone, while the animal show areas have reduced visitors to only 2,000 per round (from original 5,000 per round), to maintain social distancing practice.”

“Furthermore, all employees of the park have been vaccinated at two doses and received antigen testing before coming to work,” he added.

Rit further added that before the pandemic, over 80 per cent of Safari World’s customers are foreign tourists. “Due to global travel restrictions we have to adjust our strategies to attract domestic travelers, including opening an outdoor photo studio where visitors can take pictures with their favorite animals such as tiger cubs, birds, camels, and giraffes,” he added.

Safari World consists of two parks named Marine Park and Safari Park, opened in 1988 with a total area of 480 acres (190 ha) for its open zoo and 180 acres (73 ha) for its bird park. It hires more than 1,000 staffers to take care of over 50,000 animals including zebras, elephants, wildebeests, impalas, white rhinoceros, hippopotamus, ostriches, spotted deer, lions, Bengal tigers and variety of birds.

Animal shows at Marine Park are now opening only on Friday, weekends, and holidays, while the Safari Park opens daily from 9am to 5pm.: https://www.nationthailand.com/in-focus/40007336

          • Aswin vows to have 70% Bangkokians jabbed in time for Nov reopening

Governor Aswin Kwanmuang promised on Monday that at least 70 per cent of Bangkokians will be double jabbed within this month, so the capital can reopen next month, and its economy can start to recover.

The governor also took receipt of six mobile vaccination units donated by the Smart Bus Co, Chamber of Commerce and Board of Trade, PTT, Central Group and the Mall Group.

People arriving at the vaccination unit will be screened and asked to fill in a consent form. Their ID card will then be verified before they get their jab. They will then be monitored for 30 minutes before getting an appointment for their second dose.

The governor added that each BMV can serve 600 a day, and within this October, total 70 per cent of people in Bangkok will get the second dose.

Also, he added that the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration had provided jabs of Covid-19 vaccine in eight areas of the capital, through the BMV service from September 7 to October 7. : https://www.nationthailand.com/in-focus/40007342

            • Khon Kaen opening more field hospitals

Two more field hospitals will be opened in Khon Kaen province to cope with new Covid-19 infections, raising the total to three, governor Somsak Jangtrakul said on Tuesday.

Mr Somsak said a meeting of the provincial communicable disease committee on Monday agreed on the need to open the second and third hospitals after about 300 new Covid-19 cases were found during the past few days.

One would be at the Isan Buddhist Diocese and the other at the Tha Phra Agriculture Office in tambon Tha Phra, both in Muang district.

The province's first field hospital for Covid-19 patients is at a dormitory in Khon Kaen University and was opened in April.

The governor said about 300 new infections had been detected in recent days. The patients were infected at social functions such as funerals and merit-making.

In a bid to contain the surge in Covid-19 cases the province had also stepped up vaccination rates, he said.: https://www.bangkokpost.com/thailand...ield-hospitals

                • No radioactive substances in mRNA jabs, confirms Public Health Ministry

The Public Health Ministry on Tuesday dismissed rumours doing the rounds in social media that mRNA vaccines may contain radioactive substances and aluminium contaminants.

Dr Chawetsan Namwat, the Department of Disease Control’s director for emergency health hazards and diseases, said manufacturers clearly indicate the ingredients used in the vaccine production process.

Also, he said, each batch undergoes tight safety and quality checks, and if any anomaly is detected, the batch is returned to the company for destruction. He said this is the international standard used by every country.

Thailand is using the Pfizer Covid-19 vaccine to inoculate 12- to 18-year-olds and offering Moderna vaccines as a paid alternative. Both vaccines are produced using mRNA technology.: https://www.nationthailand.com/blogs/life/40007429

The World Health Organization (WHO) has approved Siam Bioscience Company Limited, a Thai company, as a qualified production site for AstraZeneca vaccine and added the company to its Emergency Use Listing (EUL).

A letter, dated October 11th, from Dr. Rogério Gaspar, director of the WHO’s Regulation and Prequalification Department, addressed to Dr. Etleva Kadilli, director of the Supply Division of UNICEF, reads as follows:

“We are pleased to inform you of the positive recommendation of an alternative manufacturing site, Siam Bioscience Co., Ltd. , 99 Moo 4, Banmai, Bangyai, Nonthaburi 11140, Thailand, for the AstraZeneca (COPVID-19 vaccine suspension for injection.

This site includes the manufacturing of drug substance and drug product.

This recommendation is based on the data reviewed by the WHO and the positive opinion issued by the Australia Therapeutic GoodsAdministration (TGA), which is the regulatory authority of record for this vaccine.

Therefore, Siam Bioscience Co., Ltd. is added to the list of alternative manufacturing sites forAstraZeneca AB, as part of the EUL, granted to the company.”

Wholly owned by a subsidiary of the Crown Property Bureau, Siam Bioscience was established in 2009 to preserve and continue what the late King Bhumibol Adulyadej started in support of the Thai people’s health and wellbeing.

Its main products are biopharmaceuticals, to reduce Thailand’s dependence on imported active ingredients and medicines, strengthening public health and facilitating sustainable health care.

In November 2020, Siam Bioscience, Siam Cement Group, AstraZeneca and Public Health Ministry signed a letter of intent to commit to making COVID-19 vaccine available in Southeast Asia. A production agreement was subsequently signed between AstraZeneca and Siam Bioscience.

Millions of doses of the AstraZeneca vaccine, produced by Siam Bioscience, have already been delivered to the Ministry of Public Health.: https://www.thaipbsworld.com/who-app...emergency-use/

                    • Cabinet greenlights cash handouts for older taxi drivers

The Thai government on Tuesday approved relief packages for taxi drivers and motorcycle-taxi riders over 65 in 29 provinces impacted by Covid-19, who are not eligible for aid under the Social Security Act because of their age.

The assistance includes a monthly cash handout of 5,000 baht for 12,918 taxi drivers and 3,776 motorcycle taxi riders, under the cap of a 167-million-baht budget, said the government’s spokesman Thanakorn Wangboonkongchana.

Those who live in 13 provinces first designated as controlled areas will be entitled for two rounds of handouts, while the rest will only get one.

Thanakorn said registration will open in November, and the handouts will be rolled out via bank transfer by the end of the month.

“This will save the lives of transport workers,” he said. “The transport system is key in driving economic activities.”: https://www.thaienquirer.com/33905/c...-taxi-drivers/

                      • South Korea to donate 1.1m AstraZeneca doses

South Korea will donate 1.1 million doses of AstraZeneca's Covid-19 vaccine to Vietnam and 470,000 doses to Thailand, the Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency (KDCA) said on Tuesday.

The donations come as South Korea has administered nearly 80% of its 52 million population with at least one dose of a vaccine, KDCA said in a statement.

Thailand's cabinet on Tuesday acknowledged the Covid-19 vaccine donation from South Korea.

Traisulee Traisoranakul, deputy government spokeswoman, said the cabinet has assigned Public Health Minister Anutin Charnvirakul to sign the donation agreement.

She said the donated vaccine will be prioritised for South Korean nationals in Thailand, though she stopped short of saying when the vaccines will arrive in the country.: https://www.bangkokpost.com/thailand...razeneca-doses

                        • Two wet markets in Chiang Mai stay closed for another 11 days after more COVID-19 infections found

The Chiang Mai COVID-19 Situation Command Centre has ordered the Muang Mai and Sor Thor Gao wet markets to remain closed until at least October 22nd after 118 more COVID-19 cases were found, raising the total in the cluster to 478.

After the finding of new cases, Dr. Songyos Khamchai, chief of communicable disease control at the Chiang Mai provincial health office, advised anyone in a high-risk group who was in contact with traders at the market, as well as the traders themselves, to isolate for 14 days as a precautionary measureto help prevent the spread of the disease.

According to the command centre, 214 new infections were recorded in Chiang Mai on Tuesday, including three who came from Bangkok and two from Lampung province, with the rest being locally-acquired cases.

Dr. Songyos said that two other new clusters have emerged. One is in Ban Khun Chang Khien, where 24 cases have been recorded to date, mostly among family and community members, and the other is at a welding shop in Makham Luang sub-district, San Pa Tong district, where eight cases have been reported.

He advised members of the public to avoid high-risk areas and social gatherings, such as parties, and anyone who visited the Muang Mai or Sor Thor Gao markets to report for COVID-19 tests.

Four more venues have been declared high risk by the provincial health office. They include a church in Pa Dad sub-district, Muang district, the welding shop in Makham Luang sub-district, a mango orchard in Mae Ngon sub-district of Fang district and a DIY store. People who have visited these places this month have been told to monitor their health and immediately seek testing if they develop symptoms.: https://www.thaipbsworld.com/two-wet...ections-found/

                            • Korat to reopen field hospital

The disease control committee of the northeastern province on Wednesday resolved to reopen a field hospital for symptomatic Covid-19 patients as it expected eased disease controls to raise their number.

The committee chaired by Nakhon Ratchasima deputy governor Chusak Chunkoh decided to reopen the field hospital at indoor stadium Liptapanlop Hall in the province's His Majesty the King's 80th Birthday Anniversary Stadium in Muang district.

The field hospital, which had 150 beds earlier, was closed as the Covid-19 caseloads declined in the province.

The committee made the decision after another field hospital at Chatichai Hall in the same sports complex was at 85% capacity, with 127 of 150 beds occupied.

The additional field hospital was intended to treat yellow-coded Covid-19 patients with non-serious symptoms whose number is likely to increase when the province reopens to foreign tourists on Nov 1, officials said.

As of Tuesday, there were 2,857 active Covid-19 cases in Nakhon Ratchasima. Of them, 379 were admitted to five field hospitals and occupied 61% of the beds.

There were 91 red-coded patients at Maharat Nakhon Ratchasima Hospital in Muang district. Only 19 beds were available there for critically ill Covid-19 cases. Conventional hospitals had 2,680 beds, 60% of which were taken.

Nakhon Ratchasima had 153 new cases over the past 24 hours, up from 128 on the previous day.: https://www.bangkokpost.com/thailand...field-hospital

                              • All 4,000 beds used in Pattani field hospitals

Almost all the 4,000 beds in field hospitals across Pattani are now occupied due to a spike in Covid-19 infections, the provincial Public Health Office says.

Dr Anurak Saraphap, head of the Pattani Provincial Public Health Office, said on Wednesday that with nearly all beds occupied, the office needs to find at least 10,000 beds for community isolation treatment.

He had asked the Pattani provincial disease control committee to impose tighter restrictions in restaurants, markets, mosques and cafes to prevent the further spread of Covid-19 in the province. On Sunday, daily new cases in Pattani hit 566, a new high, bringing the accumulated number of infections to 26,692 with 327 deaths, he said.

Muang district was the worst hit with 1,264 active cases. It needs to reopen several closed field hospitals to treat the ill, Dr Anurak said.

He said Pattani Hospital was struggling to handle an increasing number of Covid-19 patients over the past week. The hospital was short of medical personnel, due to some being infected with Covid-19, which was placing extra strain on those still working.

Some surgical operations are unable to be carried out at the hospital due to the staff shortage forcing some patients to be transferred to Somdejprayuparach Hospital in Sai Buri district.

In Songkhla, the provincial Public Health Office reported 475 new Covid-19 cases yesterday, taking the accumulated total to 36,313. No deaths were reported on Wednesday. Currently, the province has 6,340 active cases.

According to active case findings, most patients have been detected in Hat Yai, Chana, Muang, Singha Nakhon, Saba Yoi, Rattaphum and Thepa districts. Daily new cases between Oct 6-12, have been consistently high at between 400-600.

The surge is expected to continue for the next two weeks as more than 50% of the province's residents have yet to be vaccinated, the health office said, adding that 90% of patients being treated were not vaccinated. : https://www.bangkokpost.com/thailand...ield-hospitals
