    Covid cases close Phitsanulok markets

Two markets where new Covid-19 infections have been detected in Muang district township have been ordered to close for three days for cleaning, from Nov 10-12.

They are San Pu Dam, a wholesale market of fresh food and farm products, and the Ruam Jai Arkan 1, or Tetsaban 6, market.

The closing order was issued on Monday afternoon by the communicable disease committee of this central northern province. Most of the traders learned of it from the freeware LINE app.

The closures came as the province logged dozens of new cases every day. The highest number was 102 on Nov 4, followed by 92 on Saturday and 80 on both Sunday and Monday. Most of the infections were found at the two markets.

On Tuesday, people rushed to stock up on fresh food and vegetables ahead of the three-day closures.

Five other markets in Phitsanulok town were earlier ordered closed, from Nov 6-12, because of Covid infections.: https://www.bangkokpost.com/thailand...anulok-markets

    Govt to boost medical arsenal

The Ministry of Public Health plans to procure two types of oral Covid-19 antiviral medicine for use in Thailand to fight Covid-19 along with other treatments and vaccines.

Dr Atthasit Srisubat, adviser to the Department of Medical Services, said on Monday the ministry is expected to propose to the cabinet its planned procurement of Molnupiravir for approval on Tuesday.

"If approved, the drug is likely to be delivered in late December or January next year," he said of the medicine developed by US drug companies Merck and Ridgeback Biotherapeutics.

Dr Atthasit said the ministry will also pursue further talks with Pfizer on Friday over procurement of another Covid-19 antiviral medicine, Paxlovid.

"The ministry has been in talks with the company over this drug candidate since August this year when the results of its study were not available," he said.

The ministry's move comes after Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha over the weekend urged the ministry to speed up pre-ordering the two types of Covid-19 antiviral medicines for use.

Citing results of the clinical trials, Dr Atthasit said the two oral anti-viral drugs have been found to cut the risk of hospitalisation among Covid-19 patients. Both drugs work by preventing the virus from multiplying and thus reducing the severity of infection, he said, adding that they are effective against mild or moderate Covid-19 symptoms and in vulnerable groups.

However, he said these drugs are not recommended for those with severe kidney and liver problems and people with HIV/Aids suffering extremely low immunity, due to a lack of data on the medicines. He said the amount of drugs required will depend on the number of Covid-19 infections and it is estimated about 10% of patients will need antiviral treatments.: https://www.bangkokpost.com/thailand...edical-arsenal

COVID infections among attendees of Buddhist ceremonies under watch

Thailand’s Centre for COVID-19 Situation Administration (CCSA) has expressed concern over new COVID-19 infections among people attending Kathin ceremonies, to present saffron robes to monks in temples, and has advised them to exercise extreme caution to protect themselves from the disease.

CCSA Assistant Spokesperson Dr. Apisamai Srirangsan said today (Monday) that they had noted that new infections, related to people who attended a recent Kathin ceremony in the north-eastern province of Khon Kaen, have surfaced in Yasothon, Roi Et, Si Sa Ket, Prachuap Khiri Khan, Sing Buri, Kanchanaburi and Satun provinces.

New infections linked to funerals have also been detected in Kanchanaburi, Phatthalung and Songkhla provinces, she added.: https://www.thaipbsworld.com/covid-i...s-under-watch/

A total of 625 inmates at two prisons in this northeastern province have been infected with Covid-19, the provincial communicable disease committee reported on Sunday.

The prison infections were detected after public health officials and medical staff from the Golden Gate Hospital on Saturday tested about 2,000 inmates and officials at the Nakhon Ratchasima Central Prison with antigen test kits (ATK).

The test results were sent to Maharat Nakhon Ratchasima Hospital for confirmation.

On Sunday, RT-PCR tests at the hospital confirmed 416 inmates at the Nakhon Ratchasima Central Prison were infected with Covid-19.

Moreover, another 209 inmates at the Nakhon Ratchasima Women Correctional Institution in tambon Khlong Phai, Si Khiu district, also tested positive for Covid-19, increasing the number of confirmed infections at Nakhon Ratchasima prisons on Sunday to 625.

No Covid infections had been found at four other prisons in the province.

Nakhon Ratchasima on Sunday logged 97 new Covid-19 cases. Of them, 93 were infected in the province and four were returnees from risk areas.: https://www.bangkokpost.com/thailand...-korat-prisons

Some schools in Thailand’s northeast closed over COVID concerns first week of reopening

Some schools, including kindergartens, in Thailand’s northeast have been ordered closed over COVID-19 concerns following infections found among students and teachers, only in the first week of reopening of many schools across the country.

A high school in the province of Mukdahan was ordered closed, from today (Friday) until November 11th, after 80 students and staff were found to be infected with the coronavirus.

Health, other officials and medics from Nikhom Kham Soi district were dispatched to Khamsoi Pittayasan School to conduct the COVID-19 tests. All the infected were sent to a field hospital for observation and treatment as district officials appealed for public donations of food and drinking water. Students who tested negative were immediately sent home.

The head teacher then ordered the school, which had reopened on November 1st, like many other schools across the country,to close for a week.

Meanwhile, the provincial health office reported yesterday that 19 new infections were found in the province, most of whom are believed to have contracted the disease from a patient at the provincial hospital.

Between April 1st and Wednesday, 2,307 infections have been recorded in this north-eastern province, with nine deaths to date.

In another north-eastern province of Bueng Kan, a kindergarten called parents to pick up their children from school as it was found that a teacher trainee contracted the virus, and the school has since been closed.

In the northern province of Chiang Mai, where COVID-19 infections are spreading, Deputy Governor Voravit Chaisawatyesterday ordered a community isolation facility, at the Muang District’s in-door stadium, to accept migrant foreign workers who test positive using rapid antigen tests.

Vaccinations and mass screenings have been stepped up as provincial health officials try desperately to contain the spread of the virus.

492 new COVID-19 cases were logged on Thursday, making Chiang Mai one of Thailand’s provinces with the highest rates of new infections.: https://www.thaipbsworld.com/some-sc...-of-reopening/

Covid vaccination linked to 3 deaths

A committee of health experts has concluded that Covid-19 vaccination killed three people out of the 842 fatalities investigated to date, according to the Public Health Ministry.

Their findings were released on Thursday by Chawetsan Namwat, director for emergency health hazard and disease control at the ministry's Department of Disease Control.

He said two of the three died of thrombosis (blood clots) and thrombocytopenia (low platelet count). The other succumbed to severe allergic reaction and shock.

Dr Chawetsan said as of Oct 24 there were reports of 1,296 deaths after Covid-19 inoculation and experts tasked with investigating the deaths had examined 842 cases.

He said 541 of the deaths were found to be coincidental events, meaning the deaths coincidentally resulted from other illnesses and had nothing to do with the vaccination.

The coincidental events included 257 people with severe lung inflammation, 109 with cardiovascular disease, 37 had strokes and 29 blood infections.

Eight had abdominal bleeding, six had lung cancer, four had pulmonary embolism (blood clots in lungs), two had breast cancer and two had liver failure after eating poisonous mushrooms.

Experts also found they could not determine if 66 deaths resulted from the vaccination or not. The indeterminate events included 47 deaths of people who had cardiovascular disease.

There was also not enough information for experts to determine whether 41 deaths were related to Covid-19 vaccinations. They defined the cases as unclassified events.

"In sum, Covid-19 vaccines are considered as safe," Dr Chawetsan said.: https://www.bangkokpost.com/thailand...ed-to-3-deaths

Girl's illness after vaccine vexes medics

The Department of Disease Control is investigating if a Pfizer Covid-19 shot caused a 12-year-old girl in Ratchaburi to fall severely ill.

The director of the Epidemiology Division at the DDC, Chakkarat Pittayawong-anont, said the girl, who received the Pfizer jab on Oct 19, began coughing and complained of chest pain last Sunday.

The girl was initially admitted to Ratchaburi Hospital on Oct 25, where she was given antibiotics and a diuretic. However, her condition continued to deteriorate and her doctors decided to transfer her to a different facility on Oct 26.

Queen Sirikit National Institute of Child Health, where the girl is currently being observed by doctors, has yet to conclude that her condition is linked to the vaccine she received.

The institute said the girl has a persistent cough, and shortness of breath which resulted in cyanosis.

Dr Chakkarat said the girl's medical records will be sent to an expert panel which will oversee the matter, as the case was a first of its kind in Thailand.

Doctors from QSNICH said the girl has been suffering from kyphosis -- an abnormal curvature of the spine -- since she was nine months old, which led to breathing problems that became apparent when the girl was two years old.: https://www.bangkokpost.com/thailand...e-vexes-medics

Thailand’s first case of severe side effects after receiving Pfizer jab recovering well

Health officials have been trying to wrap up the analysis of what is believed to be Thailand’s first known case of severe side effects, involving a 12-year-old Thai girl, who was inoculated with the Pfizer mRNA vaccine. The case will be submitted to a panel of medical specialists.

Director of the Division of Epidemiology at the Disease Control Department Dr. Chakkarat Pittayawonganon, assured the public that the Pfizer vaccine is safe and only a handful of cases of side effects have been reported, out of over two million students, aged 12-18, who have received the vaccine.

He said that the girl in question, who lives in Ratchaburi province, developed a cough, fatigue and chest pain six days after she was given a Pfizer jab.

On Tuesday, the Queen Sirikit National Institute of Child Health issued a statement about the girl, who was sent to the institute for medical treatment from Ratchaburi provincial hospital on October 26th.

The girl had been admitted to hospital the previous day, after she developed the symptoms, and was immediately given high flow oxygen therapy and antibiotics.

After a thorough examination, the institute said that the girl was physically under-developed and much smaller than other girls of her age, has a Kyphosis and an abnormal body structure, which may have an impact on her lung function.

A check of her heart shows the heart muscle functions properly and there is no sign of inflammation, but she was diagnosed as suffering from a pulmonary embolism.

During her treatment in the ICU at the institute, she was given a blood clotting drug and, initially, was on a ventilator which has been replaced by a high flow oxygen device.

On October 29th, blood circulation in the lungs had improved as the blood clots have almost completely dissolved. Her condition has improved and she was moved out of the ICU to a special children’s ward on November 1st, said the institute, adding that she can now eat by herself.

The institute also said that a panel of medical experts have been trying to determine what caused blood clots.: https://www.thaipbsworld.com/thailan...covering-well/
