  • Phuket vs Chiang Mai

If you had to spend the rest of your life in one of those two places, which would you choose and why?

    Here's my take.

The only advantage I see with CM is it's probably a bit cheaper - but then you get what you pay for and I've never been one to look for a cheap and nasty bargain basement life.

If moving to the tropics, why pick a landlocked area hundreds of miles from the nearest beach and island?

CMs climate is certainly no advantage. Sure, its cool season is pleasant temperature-wise but is ruined by the resulting endless sun which makes spending time outdoors tedious, and of course the lack of wind, and the hideous dust& pollution. Followed by a grim hot season.

Give me clouds wind and some weekly rain anytime.

A serious option would have been the beach or a small city in the mountains. Personally I'd prefer to have both, though not rip off Phuket, Pranburi would be nice.
I visited TC a few times as a guest but had to stop. It is a sickening place. - Aging One

What would be ideal is a highland city near a coastal city so you can migrate between them depending on whether you want European weather or tropical beaches.

It's a pity that Thailand doesn't have something like Dalat - Nha Trang.

CM is not cheap & nasty, but it's grown too large & congested over the years. Never liked Phuket much as a visitor - don't like to rely on rip-off transport mafia and many things seem overpriced.

The area around Hua Hin is probably the closest one can find to having both sea & mountains. Reasonable infrastructure, too.

My missus inherited a small farm in the middle of nowhere 20 years ago - cheap and stunning surroundings. Infrastructure is sadly missing, specially access to medical facilities which becomes more important in old age. I am having serious doubts about it as a retirement choice.

Me too, but with your own condo in Phuket Town away from the tourist-clogged beaches and your own transport I think it'd be the best place in Thailand to live, as an international school teacher or retiree.
