Even after all my years in the LOS I still end up scratching my head in wonderment and disbelief . I was at a friends house checking out his new LG large screen TV when his Thai wife's brother called in to see her . It turned out that the Thai brother was experiencing some health issues and had started to rapidly lose weight and had ongoing daily stomach pains. I asked my friends Thai wife if her brother had already been to see a doctor or gone to hospital to seek advice. The answer was no but he had been to a local back street ‘’ clinic ‘’ who gave him some unmarked pills and told him to take these pills and all should be well. I asked the brother ( the friends wife translated ) why he had not been to see a doctor at the local government hospital as it should not cost a lot

The brothers answer was this.

If he went to see a doctor especially at a hospital he could be told by the doctor that he has some really bad medical condition and he did not want to know about that .

That's quite frightening, but I see your point. There's definitely an anti confrontational cultural aspect here where people avoid bad things by blanking them out. It covers all aspects of life not only health.

The thing that gets to me is who in their right mind when experiencing such health related symptoms like continuing drastic weight loss combined with daily stomach pains , would not want to know the reason why . I wonder if this future scenario could play out . The brothers visit to a back street clinic and receiving some unmarked pills have no effect at all and his condition only starts to get worse . One day the brother collapses and is taken to hospital where a range of tests are carried out .Eventually the doctor walks up to the brothers hospital bed and tells him the findings of the recent tests . The test results are not good and the doctor makes the following comment to the brother . Well if you had come to see us when you first started having these symptoms its very likely that we could have started you on a course of treatment that would have treated your medical condition and you would have eventually been fine. But as you did not ever seek medical advice at a hospital when you first started experiencing your symptoms its now to late and I would suggest that within the next few weeks you start to make plans to say goodbye to your family .

Seeing Thai drivers slow down to almost a stop to go around a junction because their steering wheel is a confusing tool, or pull out in front of a motorbike because they don't see it or feel more important sums it up nicely.
