  • Living in Pattaya. The stigma.

Is there actually some people like retirees, who live there with the expectation that people will think they are normal ?

I mean, anyone who's heard of SE Asia knows that Pattaya is whore central. But it seems like they are marketing it as a legit retirement destination.

I'd like to reserve a spot on the curb at the start of beach road for 20 years from now. So I can sit there and watch the world go by

Sounds like the dark side is where the semi normal expats reside, but it's a shithole.

Conversely, Phuket Island has lots of completely normal residential areas, and a mini Pattaya in the form of Patong. Best of both worlds, and far more attractive geographically ( numerous forested mountains) & beach quality.

Most of Pattaya is a shithole, the darkside even worse, which resembles a cheap concrete shanty town spread along its dangerous winding roads. A lot of Isaan whores own property down there.

Also more to do with tthe 80% who populate it. Farangs who got manipulated by the place and look as if they'd rather be elsewhere but are trapped by their dodgy wives, other farangs that are elsewhere mentally or checmically, and an Isaan populatiion who have mostly open contempt for those farangs.

I agree. Phuket is great. The motorcycle riding down there is top notch. It's just damn far away though. From bkk ect

I've just looked up one of my early TD threads in which I was strangely considering moving to Jomtien. Lots of interesting comments. https://teakdoor.com/living-in-thail...oose-live.html

Note my post #16 where I refer to Phuket as "a prefabricated shitehold full of fat old Germans walking around in shorts and sandals" This view was based on having spent a couple of weeks in Patong in 2002. I hadn't bothered to explore the rest of the island, which makes up 95% of Phuket and is lovely.

An hour flight, compared to two hours by van to get to Pattaya.

It also has a nice Malaysia feel about it, with lots of colonial buildings, beautifully designed newer buildings, good roads, and plenty of Chinese & Muslim food (35% of the island's population is Thai Chinese thanks to its tin mining history like that of Kuala Lumpur, and 20% of the island's population is Muslim), whereas Pattaya feels like Ubon-On-Sea.

Yeah. It's always kind of a laugh to see the old bastards that accumulate on the beach rd concrete slabs during the day. But retired ppl all have that look. I seen them in Mexico too

To be honest I'd say the quality of retiree has gone up a bit. From 2007 to say 2015. There's less of the really grubby ****s

I asked one that I used to know why he chose to live in Pattaya. Said he retired there after working in Bangkok and spending long weekend escapes on Koh Chang. Had to get out of Bangkok to keep his sanity, would have been bored shitless living on Koh Chang, and thought of Pattaya as half way between Bangkok and Koh Chang, geographically, development-wise, and beauty-wise.

It probably has the cleanest air in Thailand too for places on or connected to the mainland, as it's surrounded by sea and remote from any large cities, industry, or anywhere that burns its crop stubble, and it doesn't have a dry season as such so never gets dusty & tinder dry with the associated forest fires.

Pattaya gets quite polluted, but not a patch on cities further north, which I could never live in.

There are next to no ideal places for foreigners to live in Thailand.

Bangkok - hectic, overcrowded, hideous traffic, polluted, and a pain in the arse to get out of when you want a daytrip somewhere pleasant.
Isaan - Backward and primitive farmer region
Chiang Mai & Udon - hundreds of miles from any beaches (the best thing about the tropics), grim dust and air pollution for months on end followed by a nasty 40 celcius hot season
                      Pattaya- Buriram-On-Sea, infested with lowlifes
                      The South - piss boring
Islands such as Samui and Chang - remote and isolated, lots of tourist gouging, great for a few weeks but no place to spend a few years

The only liveable place IMO is Phuket, but not in the tourist enclaves of Patong, Kata, Kamala etc which suffer from the same overpricing issues as Samui. Phuket Town, a piece of history associated with the Malacca Straits settlements, ethnically diverse, stunning Sino-Portuguese colonial buildings, nicely developed due to trillions of tourist baht heading into the island over the past 30 years, perfectly sized with 80,000 people, lively Thai-themed nightlife, several cool night markets, and some of the world's best beaches a few minutes drive away.

Common though. All of Thailand , even BKK and Pattaya, are set up as a proper human habitat. You can get around anywhere by walking or taking a bike. The streets are alive. Residential , stores and nightlife are all on the same street.

Compare this to the dull suburbs of North America. Where you have to drive a 1/2 hour to get anywhere. All the roads are void of life. And young ppl are stuck hanging out on the berm between the Walmart and the Jiffy Lube.

As someone who grew up in the boring hellscapes of N.America , the bustling streets of SE Asia is the pull that keeps me going back.

Me and my friends went from our parents driving us to the airport (we were 19) to doing a catwalk down the sidewalk of a BKK street in a Tuktuk , with big Changs in our hand. One for the driver of course. On our way to the Patpong night market and kohsan rd. Then Nana.

That was the biggest **** you to N. American civic life ever.

You are really convincing me on Phuket though. I don't remember the beaches being all that close to Phuket town. I wanted to stay in Phuket town but my lady insisted we go to Patong.

I've never been a fan of the US and its domestic logistics set up around car ownership. Nothing can beat Europe for what you're referring to, pleasant walkable neighbourhoods, and I was lucky enough to grow up in a very pleasant English rural market town.

The shoddy pavements of Thailand, the heat, and the selfish pea-brained morons that ride their motorbikes on them make the Thai preference for taking a motorbike taxi instead walking 100 metres understandable. However, I can see why it would still be preferable to the urban sprawl of somewhere like LA.

You're talking a 10 minute ride from Phuket Town through Kathu and over the small mountain that backs Patong to get there, and slightly more to get to other beaches.

20 minutes or so to get to Nai Harn, my favourite Phuket beach, which will be much quieter than this during recent months.

^ Croatia was my favorite country before discovering Thailand. Bacvice beach and Split were amazing. Europe in general is great

For anyone who's never lived in North America , I'd argue that its worse than you can even imagine.
