  • Oversimplifying Brexit

After all the negotiations and all the talking and accusations about lack of progress on both sides, it appears to have got down to a few sticking points some of which include the Irish border, workers conditions and fishing rights.
The E.U. has been fairly consistent in its stance that the U.K. cannot expect the same rights and privileges outside of the E.U. that it enjoyed while in. However, the E.U. expects members rights and privileges on fishing should remain the same. Quite an unrealistic expectation that wreaks of double standards and hypocrisy. There appears to be disagreement between the fishing states who want no compromises on fishing rights and even Barnier and Merkel who recognise it is unrealistic. Macron is head of the intransigence brigade that may end with no fishing deal rather than one where Britains rights to set limits are recognised in a compromise deal.

Fish are a key UK resource, like cars are for Germany. The UK is saying it wants freedom to sell its fish to the EU, just like ze Germans want to sell their BMWs to the UK.

But the EU are being cnuts and think that just because the fish stocks are in UK waters not on UK soil, they should be able to help themselves to the fish. It's no different to the UK saying that in exchange for buying BMWs it wants free access to help itself to all BMW technology and inventory.

There's a long history of contention and negotiations of fishing rights in the North Sea, this is just the latest chapter. Got nought to do with BMW or any other apples&oranges comparison.
The UK's withdrawal from the 1964 Fishery Convention and the EU requires re-negotiation, taking into account historic fishing rights as well as treaties.

The EU doesn't want to recognise the UK's sovereign right to its own EEZ resources. It seems to want to "cherry pick" them for itself.
