  • What's the appeal of spending decades in Thailand?

Face it, life has gone wrong for anyone that does it. Any westerner with the means to regularly leave does so.

I've met foreigners that have spent decades in Thailand without taking more than a visa run to a neighbouring country or a short holiday back to the west for a family visit. I've never met one I'd deem as being sane.

I tend to agree....there is always something happening to cause them to stay there.
Apart from the usual mental health issues, a warrant out for them in the West is another one not spoken about here much. Also, the Thai infrastructure is crap. Who would want to spend a long time there ? Where are the public libraries ?

      Infrastructure is pretty good.

If you need free public services, stay in Oz. An afternoon spent in the library may lift your spirits. Not required in Los, the weather is fine.
Go to a museum or temple if bored.

What's the appeal of obsessing over long term expats and their lifestyle decisions from grey Bournemouth? Just makes you feel even worse, I would think.

Then there's the type of weirdo that always tries to stop such things being discussed, via ad hominem. Ahem ^

            Depends on the circumstances.

Discussing it doesn't mean one is jealous. It's just a discussion so all that ''you're butthurt and jealous of me'' for having a different opinion is a type of deflection.

^I think maybe he meant those living in the doldrums and constantly moaning about it but pretending otherwise. Anyone living the kind of lifestyle you're describing would have a more stimulating day to day existence

^^ The title of the thread refers to decades. Only two types of westerner do that:

                i) pensioners, who move to Thailand in middle or old age and can't be bothered to move anywhere else as they've seen enough of the world already

ii) younger westerner adults who decide to have a career and family in Thailand (and are the ones who seem to have the mental health issues, which either caused them to move to Thailand or developed/worsened because of the move)

The digital nomad types you refer to are much more mobile. They'll probably spend a year or two in Thailand before moving on to somewhere like Bali, Philippines, Taiwan, Vietnam, or South America.

I know of 2 blokes who aren't exactly doing well but still felt the need to bring a kid into this world. A ploy to stop their woman from straying towards a better guy I suppose. Puts pressure on themselves. One works 7 days a week teaching extra classes to fund this predicament

The (easy) trick is to find one that doesn't want to be a mother. Probably 20% of women these days. Saves for a whole lot of grief and decades of boring breadwinner existence.

I mean Thailand, maybe in the belief the guy can financially support them or that the guy is rich and they can trap him. Love doesn't have to come into it.

All that raising kids and changing nappies at 3am is what I fled the west to avoid.

The blokes I mention I believe were a pair of ****ing idiots, ill equipped and without stable employment. A flimsy contract slaving at a govt school isn't that.

We're the only species that can choose to not reproduce. That alone (but there are many more reasons) makes it a fabulous route to take.

I can't think of anything worse than getting trapped somewhere like thailand because you reproduced there and then put all your eggs into that basket to try to make it work

                          Then there's

                          - alcoholism,
-a fetish for bargirls that begins to hurt within hours of leaving Thailand
-a feeling like they belong in developing world Asia much like that of a man who feels like he belongs in a woman's body so gets surgery,
                          - living hand to mouth without the funds to go anywhere, and
-general laziness that naturally develops from spending year after year in a dozy lazy country.

Yep, more than a decade after one left, it's time to quit sneering at those who stayed in a country one is no longer interested in and move on with one's own life.
