If you were a female would you go off walking in the remote countryside alone on an island with hundreds of thousands of poorly educated male residents and an economy that has been depleted by 90% for a year and a half?
I'm highly surprised that all types of crime haven't spiralled out of control. Interestingly, in the first half of July at the commencement of the sandbox I encountered several aggressive beggars, who suddenly seemed to have appeared on the streets with the promised return of international tourism. Whilst walking one evening one even rode up to me on a motorbike and asked me for 100 baht. I told him I'd give him 1000 baht for the motorbike. He soon foked off.
Of course, with the sandbox being a dismal failure, I haven't seen any for the past three weeks.

ew details have just emerged in Thai media about the suspect detained today in the murder of the 57 year old Swiss traveller in Phuket found yesterday. The newly obtained information says the suspect is in fact a 27 year old Thai man, and not a 33 year old Burmese man as previously reported (in Thai Rath).
According to Matichon Online, the Thai man allegedly confessed to the murder. He is said to be a native of Phuket who lived nearby and was in the forest “gathering things”, possibly hunting for food, when he bumped into Nicole Sauvain-Weisskopf at the waterfall. The murder suspect claimed he was aroused and attempted to rape her, but she resisted and he strangled her and possibly held her head under the water until she died.
There also appears to be CCTV footage that captures the murder suspect riding his motorbike on the road leading to the waterfall where the Swiss woman’s body was found.
But Thai PBS is reporting…
“Police say there will be a press conference tomorrow about the murder of the Swiss tourist. They insist the suspect is not a scapegoat as he has already confessed.”
Their narrative may still be implying that the current suspect is Burmese, using the word ‘scapegoat’ to describe the man arrested.

Tourists walk alone a lot in Phuket. I know I have been alone in Phuket, but I stay in the main beach areas of patong, karon, or kata most often.
I think she was on the other side of the island where there are less tourists even in high season. Anyway glad they caught the guy. Being Thai, will he get much jail time? Let us hope so.
Stop blaming the victim by the way.
The Daily News is reporting today that the arrested man, 27 year-old Thirawat Thothip, was at one time a Muay Thai boxer known as 'Banglee' who fought at various venues before he got into drugs. He is also the son of a former famous local kamnan (village chief).

The point is she was raped, okay maybe she wasn't that smart to walk off by herself, but this was a horrific crime.
