About two years ago while in the states I replaced an old wooden (weatherworn) entrance gate (columns) with two beautiful 3.5 feet by 3.5 feet brick columns. A hurricane had damaged the old posts.
Both those columns are 3.5 feet in the ground set on a 4-inch thick, 4 feet by 4 feet spread footer fill with concrete and electrical PVC running down the center of each. Bit over kill, but will last a lifetime and no hurricane will damage them.
Both columns stand 6 foot above ground to hold a double wide gate (heavy equipment moves in and out of that gate).
I built those columns by myself (took me a couple months working on them a little each morning). Whatshername did help me when lining up the gate hooks into the columns.
Because the entrance gate is in a remote area (no electricity) I also had a solar power system install by a friend. Lights are the only thing that the solar power station supplies electricity to now (light sensor that turns the lights on automatically when the sun goes down) but is large enough to accommodate electrical gates and security cameras.
At the time I installed some simple aluminum gates and now (or when I get back) I’m thinking about going with something a little more pleasing to the eye.
