  • How is Thailand presently?

I haven't been to Thailand in a year and so much has been happening. How is the economy doing? Do you think less tourists are going to Thailand this year because of the coup? I'm just wondering if it is a good time to visit again in the near future or for me to go elsewhere. Ta

question is too open ended .

certain attractions are same as they always were .

question is do you want to repeat the experience or discover something new ?

Thailand is same same as always but worse. The place is becoming an even more of a pain in the butt democracy that is full of hoops of blazing fire to jump through. That includes doing business and long stay.

Do not event thank about wearing red. At best, the Thai army boys will knock you down and tear it off of you. At worst they will drag you off kicking in screaming to some Gitmo style jail and consult with a fortune teller on whether to stone you or behead you,

      Next question?

For genuine tourists I don't think much has changed. Same old shows, restaurants, temples, bars etc.

There's an exciting new form to sign when you arrive, confirming you understand what will happen if you overstay your visa. Visa runs are over.

          I don't disagree with News Junkie's sentiments.

There are a few extra "don't do's" now, to go along with dress code in temples, not pointing your feet at people and not taking your Lonely Planet guide too literally.

Wearing red shirts with images of certain former politicians is out. Speaking ill of the military government is verboten. Giving a salute with three fingers (like the boy scout salute but with an extra finger). I think we can still say "dib dib" or whatever.

People are being put out of regular low-paying unskilled work in their thousands. Taxi drivers, motorsai taxi, lottery ticket vendors, people selling stuff from street carts. With the exodus of swathes of long-term "tourists" will go jobs in bars, restaurants, barbers. These people all still have to make a living so petty crime will increase, as will drug taking and pushing.

This is a honeymoon period for Thailand and if you want to visit as a tourist I would say that after this year it is going to be a miserable experience as tourists become targets for increasing levels of crime in a country where there is no functioning legal system to prevent it and where the police don't give a hoot.

Thailand is still a great destination for tourists, some stay away, so good deals even during peak periods to be had.

Cheers for the insights folks! You hear so much information in the western media and some of it I don't believe. As they tend to have a slant and blow things bigger than they are. That's why I ask people living there.

^I'm sure I'll still visit regularly, but be extra vigilant about my safety.
Philippines is on the list for beaches as well.

There have been some changes while you were away.

Do not eat a sandwich in public, especially while reading a book. Probably safest to avoid eating sandwiches and bread altogether otherwise you will be toast.

Don't read a book in public, as you will be arrested on possible terrorist and murder charges etc. Best not to read anything at all.

Keep your hands in your pockets at all times and don't even think about waving to someone. The rules on which fingers may be shown in public are changing daily so please...no hands ( if you must, you may leave your flies undone and your willy out without attracting too much attention ).

Try not to use the words long and live in the same sentance and never use them together under any circumstance unless you want a 15 year extended holiday.

Don't brink any clothes with even a trace of red on them or else you may end up being asked to remove them. If you are a football fan play safe and support Chelsea or Norwich only whilst you are here.

At the moment it is compulsary to be happy, even if a close relative has recently passed on. Remember to wear an innane smile whenever leaving your hotel room, in fact, avoid leaving your hotel room whenever possible.

Don't expect to watch a movie to its completion in your hotel room since they are always interupted towards the end, at the most exciting bit , by the good general making some riveting announcements about who he wants to spank the following day. Worth noting too that James Bond is no longer 007. General Prayuth is the new 007 . I know because he has featured in every Bond film from Goldfinger to Octapussy this week. He would have looked a lot better had he been stroking a white cat, but that is just my personal opinion.

If you see someone walking towards you try to avoid them by as much distance as possible otherwise you will look like part of a group and be arrested on suspicion of plotting to lead a sandwich eating protest.

If, in the highly unlikely event you are shot....remember to keep smiling.

Apart from these pointers just play it by here are have a wonderful time in LOS ( land of sorrow )

Below is a picture of the only sign I have seen of blatant disrespect for authority. This dog, his name is Tamarind, usually sleeps on a BTS bridge or walkway but now he is daring security to arrest him by sleeping under the sign which prohibits, among many things, sleeping on BTS property.

Normally there is the same flea bitten dog sleeping right in the doorway of the local 7-11 i frequent. No one shoos him away and Thais step over him with a soulless look in their eyes.

Yes they dogs like the aircon in the 7-11 stores. Doors constantly opening and closing giving them a nice cool breeze. Tamarind has been known to venture 300 metres down the soi to a 7-11 but there are too many cars and motorsais parking outside, so he prefers prime position on the footbridge. He has a ladyfriend too.

I've seen many similar dogs around the bank and 7-11's. So many soi dogs in T-land sadly mistreated and untreated for injuries.
